Z Or search the encyclopaedia: HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Duns Scotus, John Scottish monk, a leading figure in the theological and philosophical system of medieval scholasticism , which attempted to show that Christian doctrine was compatible with the ideas of the Greek philosophers Aristotle and Plato. The church rejected his ideas, and the word dunce is derived from Dunses, a term of ridicule applied to his followers. In the medieval controversy over universals he advocated nominalism, maintaining that classes of things have no independent reality. He belonged to the Franciscan order, and was known as Doctor Subtilis (the Subtle Teacher). On many points he turned against the orthodoxy of Thomas Aquinas for example, he rejected the idea of a necessary world, favouring a concept of God as absolute freedom capable of spontaneous activity.

In the academic year 1298-99 he commented on the Sentences of Peter Lombard. We know that by the fall of 1302 Scotus was lecturing on the Sentences Sentences not long thereafter. Surname: Famous Scots - John Duns Scotus (1265-1308) Introduction John Duns Scotus a famous Scot? Well, clearly Pope John Paul II thought so when he beatified him in 1993. And he has given his name to a word in the English language - dunce - despite being regarded as one of the greatest of medieval thinkers. Early Years John was born around 1265, probably in the Berwickshire village of Duns (where there is a statue to him). A suggestion that he came from Maxton in Roxburghshire arose from an 18th century forgery. He joined the Franciscan order in Dumfries in 1281 and at that stage added the town of his birth to his name - a frequent occurrence at a time when surnames were starting to be adopted. He was ordained as a priest ten years later in Northampton, in England. He later studied at Oxford and Paris and then took up a teaching post back at Oxford. Travelling Around John Duns is known to have been teaching in Paris around 1301 but because he spoke out on behalf of the Pope in a dispute between the Pontiff and the King Philip the Fair of France, he was expelled. He came back later to Paris and was made Doctor of Theology there in 1305. He moved on to Cologne in 1307 and taught there for a year before his death (possibly from a stroke) in 1308, at the age of 43. He was buried in a Franciscan church in Cologne. His Theology The Dominican friar Thomas Aquinas (1227-1274) exerted a considerable influence on the Catholic church in the 13th century. But John Duns Scotus rejected his teachings, arguing that the individual will predominated over the intellect and that faith was an individual act of will. John Duns differentiated between belief and statements which could be proved by factors other than religion. The result was to create two rival theological camps. The intellectual ability of John Duns and his understanding of the teachings of Aquinas allowed him to be critical of the rival theology. Duns earned the title "Doctor Subtilis" (the Subtle Doctor) because of his ability to construct a complex argument and proof.

When the latter went to Paris, Duns succeeded to his chair, and taught in Oxford with great success. He is said to have had three thousand pupils. It was especially his keenness and subtlety which impressed people; for which reason he received the title of doctor subtilis . While in Oxford he wrote a commentary upon the Sentences of the Lombard Opus Oxoniense . About 1301 he went to Paris, and there he also lectured on the Sentences; which lectures afterwards were published under the title Reportata Parisiensia . Tn 1305 he obtained the degree of doctor. After the order of Clement V. he held a grand disputation with the Dominicans concernmg the immaculate conception of Mary. He came out victorious. Even the marble statue of the Virgin, standing in the disputation hall, bowed to him when he descended from the cathedra; and it became a rule in the university, that he who obtained a degree there should take an oath to defend the doctrine of the immaculate conception. In 1308 Duns was sent to Cologne, by the general of his order, to contend with the Beghards, who were numerous in those regions, and with the Dominicans , who refused to accept the new dogma. lie was received with great honors, but died in the same year from apoplexy.

Though his claim that universal concepts are based on a "common nature" in individuals made him a prime target for the Nominalism of William of Ockham in the 14th-century controversy between Realists and Nominalists concerning the question whether general types are figments of the mind or are real, it later deeply influenced Charles Sanders Peirce, an American philosopher, who considered Duns Scotus the greatest speculative mind of the Middle Ages as well as one of the "profoundest metaphysicians that ever lived." His strong defence of the papacy against the "divine right" of kings made him unpopular with the English Reformers of the 16th century for whom "dunce" (a Dunsman) became a word of obloquy, yet his theory of intuitive cognition suggested to John Calvin, the Genevan Reformer, how God may be "experienced."
