MEMO THREE: Rational Choice, Jon Elster, ed. Todd Ferguson Sociology 166-652A Professor Axel van den Berg Rational Choice Rational Choice , due to their abstract and theory-laden nature, not to mention the infancy of its empirical work at the time. disregard the "social animal" nature of humans (p. 73), but without much empirical evidence to back it up. Gary Becker proposes to "spell out the principal attributes of the economic approach" (p. 108) in his essay, but instead he attempts to illustrate the universality of the approach to all social phenomenon, explicitly stating that "all human behaviour can be viewed as involving participants who maximize their utility from a stable set of preferences and accumulate an optimal amount of information and other inputs in a variety of markets." (p. 119). Unfortunately, in cases like homosexuality or the failure of punitive sentencing to invoke a deterrent, this is universality is not readily-apparent and the lack of empirical evidence provided by Becker further challenges his own assertions. More than a decade later, Hechter and Kanazawa have the privilege of looking back on a mountain of empirical work done since

68. New Institutional Theory And Energy Savings
elster, jon (1989) Social Norms and Economic Theory. Journal of Economic Perspectives, vol. 3, no. 4, pp 99117. elster, jon (1986) Introduction.
http://www.akf.dk/eng/teori.htm
Can New Institutional Theory Contribute to the Understanding of the Actors' Behaviour in Connection with Energy Savings? Lene Holm Pedersen, September 1997 The neoclassical economy predicts that energy savings which can pay will be undertaken, and that energy savings which do not pay will not be carried through. However, the empirical investigations suggest that situations where energy savings are not immediately undertaken also exist, although they are profitable, and that there are situations where energy savings are carried through, although they are not profitable. In these situations the neoclassical economy seems to lack explanatory power. A distinction is made between the different theoretical perspectives within the new institutional theory according to the differences in their understanding of the actors' rationale for action. This is seen as the major fault line between the sociological new institutionalism and the economic new institutionalism. Each perspective can be described according to the assumptions they make about the actors' rationality and the limitations set upon their behaviour by the environment, e.g. institutions. Within this framework the interplay between the actors and their institutional environment can be analysed. Taking point of departure in the sociological perspective, it can be expected that values and cognitive frameworks can influence energy savings. The theory seems to have some potential for explaining situations where energy savings are carried out even though they do not pay in a strict economic sense. For instance it can be expected to happen in situations where energy savings are prestigious or loaded with a special value. But the sociological perspective can also address situations where energy savings are not carried through although they are profitable in strict economic terms. As the major part of behaviour is seen as being based on routines and standard operating procedures, energy savings may simply be outside the focus of the consumers and companies. Another explanation could be the existence of norms or values which demand certain ways of living.

Seminar: Analytischer Marxismus (SoSe 2000)
Allgemeines

With its rich detail and source references, it is indispensable both to leibniz scholars and to students of the history of the study of language. the editor's indices make it possible to use the book also as a work of reference. the reviewer shows that the chief impulse to leibniz' study of languages was the need to disprove the swedish thesis of the northern origin of the germanic languages."

While acknowledging the importance of neurophysiology and laboratory experiment for the study of emotions, Elster argues that the serious student of the emotions can learn more from the great thinkers and writers of the past, from Aristotle to Jane Austen. He attaches particular importance to the works of the French moralists, notably La Rochefoucauld, who demonstrated the way the need for esteem and self-esteem shape human motivation. This book also maintains a running dialogue with economists and rational-choice theorists. (Reprinted from first page.)
Globalization : critical reflections
International political economy yearbook ; v. 9
Boulder, Colo. : Lynne Rienner Publishers, 1996.
HF 1359 G56 1996 This book is organized around three themes: the thrust of globalization in the realms of production and the state, political and cultural responses to it, and the potential and limits of neoliberal globalization. The first two objects of study derive from Karl Polanyi’s important insight that a “double movement” – an expansion of market forces and a reaction to it in the form of demands for self-protection against capital’s socially disruptive and polarizing effects – propels modern society. To extend Polanyi’s concept, this book examines a third phase, which involves the opportunities and constraints presented by changing structured hierarchies at the turn of the millennium.
