Hans-Georg Gadamer: Wahrheit und Methode Eine entscheidende Frage für die Hermeneutik ist ihr Umgang mit der sogenannten hermeneutischen Distanz, also etwa der historischen Differenz zwischen Text und Leser / Interpret. Hans-Georg Gadamer diskutiert diese Frage unter dem Begriff des Zeitabstands: "Die hermeneutische Bedeutung des Zeitabstandes Es ist diese Erfahrung, die in der historischen Forschung zu der Vorstellung geführt hat, daß erst aus einem gewissen geschichtlichen Abstande heraus objektive Erkenntnis erreichbar werde. Es ist wahr, daß das, was an einer Sache ist, der ihr selbst einwohnende Gehalt, sich erst im Abstand von der aus flüchtigen Umständen entstandenen Aktualität scheidet. [...] Gewisse Fehlerquellen sind da von selbst ausgeschaltet. Aber es fragt sich, ob das hermeneutische Problem sich damit erschöpft. Der zeitliche Abstand hat offenbar noch einen anderen Sinn als den der Abtötung des eigenen Interesses am Gegenstand. Er läßt den wahren Sinn, der in einer Sache liegt, erst voll herauskommen. Die Ausschöpfung des wahren Sinnes aber, der in einem Text oder in einer künstlerischen Schöpfung gelegen ist, kommt nicht irgendwo zum Abschluß, sondern ist in Wahrheit ein unendlicher Prozeß." Hoci vyrastal v prostredí orientovanom prírodovedecky /otec pracoval ako výskumník v oblasti alkaloidov/, študoval klasickú filológiu a filozofiu u Paula Friedlaendera, habilitoval sa u Martina Heideggera, na ktorého tvorivo nadväzoval, od roku 1934 pôsobil ako súkromný docent, od roku 1939 ako ordinárius na univerzite v Lipsku, od 1947 na Univerzite vo Frankfurte nad Mohanom, od 1949 prevzal vedenie katedry filozofie po Karlovi Jasperovi na Univerzite v Heidelbergu, neskôr pôsobil ako rektor univerzity, prezident Akadémie vied v Heidelbergu, predseda medzinárodného združenia podporujúceho štúdia Heglovej filozofie. Vydával casopis Philosophische Rundschau. Úcinkoval ako hostujúci profesor na viacerých európskych a amerických univerzitách. Zomrel 14. marca 2002 v Heidelbergu. Gadamer sa sústavne venoval výskumu klasickej gréckej literatúry a filozofie, vydávaniu a interpretácii jej textov. Ako minuciózny znalec sa preukázal v monografii Platónova dialektická etika /Platos dialektische Ethik, Hamburg 1931, 1968, 2000/. Zásadným spôsobom sa zaslúžil aj o reinterpretáciu Hegla /Hegels Dialektik, 1971/, o aktualizáciu Husserla, najmä však o nové cítanie Martina Heideggera /Heideggers Wege, 1983/. Medzi podnetné patria Gadamerove analýzy problematiky vedeckej racionality /Vernunft im Zeitalter der Wissenschaft, 1976; Der Anfang des Wissens, 1999/. Šírku jeho filozofickej reflexie ukazujú jeho menšie spisy /Kleine Schriften I - IV, 1967 - 1977/, ktorých tematický register siaha od výskumu európskych kultúrnych a estetických tradícii, ideí dobra, krásy, symbolizácii ku skúmaniu fenoménu hry, homo ludens, interpretácii poetického sveta.

He was 102. Gadamer was famously modest and reluctant to talk about himself. Perhaps because his life was marked by personal difficulties—the death of his mother at an early age, caring for his disabled brother, and his own handicap after contracting polio—he fiercely guarded his privacy.
