http://kurtm.net/papers/beyond_traits.html
Kurt Meinz Beyond Character Traits Moral Philosophy Meets Social Psychology [i] in terms of three questions: Firstly, how does Harman’s argument against character traits work? Secondly, what does this mean for the theories that require them? Thirdly, and most importantly, how can Harman explain away the fact that, as demonstrated above, almost everybody believes in character traits? Obviously, an important step in Harman’s argument is his definition of what exactly a character trait could be. He gives an extensional definition of character traits as things like honesty, courage, loyalty, and even intelligence; and an intensional definition as a “relatively long-term stable disposition to act in distinctive ways” that can “help to explain at least some things that the person does.” [ii] For our further work, we can accept both definitions. However, it is enlightening to note to that Harman specifically rejects shyness and other ‘innate aspects of temperament’ as character traits. This is indeed puzzling since shyness seems as innate and only as innate as the other, allowed traits (e.g. courage). It seems that what hold for one should hold for the other; either shyness is allowed as a character trait or each of the other ‘traits’ is also disqualified. Of course, both solutions pose a problem for Harman: Of all the traits, I would venture to guess that shyness has the enjoyed the greatest empirical confirmation. On the other hand, excluding all of the suggested traits from our study would make Harman’s ideas true, but only vacuously so. …

The ITE Seminar Series Every semester the Student Chapter co-sponsors a seminar series. Guests invited to speak during the seminar series are evidence of the emphasis the Student Chapter has placed on interaction and association with professionals involved with transportation. The seminar series is a way of expanding students' knowledge beyond that which is typically taught in the classroom. On several occasions the Student Chapter has invited speakers from other university departments to demonstrate the overlap of transportation with other disciplines. Spring 2002

Contemporary Ethical Theory Spring 1998 Third Examination : Questions [Be sure you are familiar with the format and ground rules for this exam.] Questions will be referred to by their "names," listed to their left. "Name" Question H-INNR What does Gilbert Harman (in "Moral Relativism Defended") mean by "inner judgments?" What does he think the "logical form" of such judgments is? What does Harman think is true of all inner judgments? Are all moral judgments inner judgments in Harman's sense? If not, explain why some moral judgments are not. If all are inner judgments, give examples of moral judgments Harman thinks not to be inner judgments and explain how they really are. Critically discuss. H-PUZZ In "Moral Relativism Defended" Harman writes "I will argue ... that this hypothesis accounts for an otherwise puzzling aspect of our moral views that, as far as I know, there is no other way to account for." What hypothesis is he referring to? What is the "puzzling aspect" that he is referring to? How (according to Harman) does the hypothesis account for this puzzling aspect? Explain. Does his hypothesis account for it? Is there any other way to account for it? Critically discuss. H-AGRE What does Gilbert Harman (in "Moral Relativism Defended") mean by an "agreement?" What, according to Harman, do agreements (in this sense) have to do with morality? Explain at least two objections that have been brought against implicit agreement theories and explain how Harman's theory (in his view) avoids these objections. Critically discuss.

Abstract
This paper describes and defends in detail a novel account of belief, an account inspired by Ryle's dispositional characterization of belief, but emphasizing irreducibly phenomenal and cognitive dispositions as well as behavioral dispositions. Potential externalist and functionalist objections are considered, as well as concerns motivated by the inevitably ceteris paribus nature of the relevant dispositional attributions. It is argued that a dispositional account of belief is particularly well-suited to handle what might be called "in-between" cases of believing - cases in which it is neither quite right to describe a person as having a particular belief nor quite right to describe her as lacking it. Keywords: belief, dispositions, dispositional, phenomenology, vagueness, functionalism, Ryle, externalism, gradual, gradualism, in-between, intermediate Subjects: Philosophy Philosophy of Mind ID Code: Deposited By: Schwitzgebel, Eric
