HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Hayek, Friedrich August von Austrian economist who taught at the London School of Economics 193150. His The Road to Serfdom (1944) was a critical study of socialist trends in Britain. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1974 with Gunnar Myrdal for his analysis of the interdependence of economic, social, and institutional phenomena. The Road to Serfdom set out to combat the wartime vogue for collectivism, and argued that economic freedom was the necessary precondition for political freedom and democracy. His ideas were enthusiastically devoured by the leaders of the resurgent free market conservatism in the late-1970s and 1980s, although these disciples did not always share Hayek's commitment to liberal values.

Hayek, Friedrich August von Friedrich August von Hayek was the co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974 (with Gunnar Myrdal). He received his doctorates in law and political science from the University of Vienna, and is arguably , the most prominent opponents to the expansion of government in the twentieth century.
Before the influence of his mentor, Ludwig von Mises, he was a Fabian socialist. Most of Hayek's early work focused on monetary theory, but later focused on the impossibility of socialism. His later work had a strong Darwinian flavor.
According to Hayek, Keynesian policies to reduce unemployment would only cause inflation, because the central bank would have to increase the money supply faster and faster in order to keep unemployment low. His book, "Tiger by the Tail" gives a ve ry detailed explanation of this.

Hayek, Friedrich August von Economiste britannique d'origine autrichienne (Vienne, 1899 — Fribourg, 1992).

L'œuvre de Hayek doit être considérée sous deux aspects: le premier, idéologique, de caractère antisocialiste (The Road to Serfdom, 1941; The Constitution of Liberty, 1960), le second, proprement économique (Geld und Konjunkturtheorie, 1929; Preise und Produktion, 1931; Collectivist Economic Planning, 1935; The Pure Theory of Capital, 1941; Individualism and Economic Order, 1948; The Sensory Order, 1952; Denationalisation of Money, 1976).

Economists - Friedrich August von Hayek (1899-1992)
Hayek was born in Vienna and from 1927 until 1931 was Director of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research. However, he was then drawn to the English-speaking academic world initially at the London School of Economics, but then at the University of Chicago from 1950 until 1962. Here the Monetarist connection becomes clear, as the Chicago School of Monetarists at Chicago University was where Friedman was based. Hayek returned to Austria as a Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Salzburg in 1969. For more details on his work and theories follow the links below.

Friedrich Hayek
(b. 1899)
F. A. Hayek was a Nobel-winning Austrian economist renowned for both his popular arguments against collectivism in The Road to Serfdom and his scholarly work on the business cycle, the function of prices and the nature of spontaneously emerging social orders. Hayek studied economics at the University of Vienna under Wieser and later under Mises in the Austrian bureaucracy and at the Institute for Business Cycle Research, which he helped Mises to found. On the basis of his work on the business cycle encapsulated in Monetary Theory and the Trade Cycle , Hayek was offered a presitigious professorship at the University of London, where he wrote the Road to Serfdom and conducted a famous debate with John Maynard Keynes.

78. Record Matching: Include 019 Fields?
AUTHOR hayek, friedrich A. von (friedrich August), 1899 PUBLISHER Chicago,University of Chicago Press c1973 DESCRIPTION xi, 184 p. 23 cm.
http://libweb.uoregon.edu/orbis/staffhome/matching-019_fields.html
Record matching: include 019 fields? from information prepared for Carol Drost, OCC Chair, by Nancy Nathanson, Orbis staff, July 1999 Explanation: Orbis member library staff continue to express concern about duplicate records in the union catalog. One reason for duplicate records can be traced back to the source of the records, the bibliographic utility. When duplicates exist in the utility, different libraries may choose different records for the cataloging source. As OCLC has cleaned up its vast database, many duplicate records have been merged, and old numbers included as cross references in the master record that is retained. The first example below shows two monograph records that were used by Orbis members before OCLC identified them as duplicates and merged them. Because serial records raise special issues, I reviewed 404 serial records that contain at least one 019 field. Those 404 records included 631 OCLC number cross references (i.e. 019 fields) since some records represent the merging of more than two records. I searched 631 numbers and found 13 instances where records would have merged if 019 were included in the matching algorithm. Those examples are included below. USMARC
