G. W. F. Hegel was born in Stuttgart, Germany, the son of a government official. He studied theology at the University of Tubingen. After serving as a tutor at Bern and Frankfurt, he was a lecturer and then a professor at the University of Jena (1801-06), headmaster of a school in Nuremberg (1808-16), and professor at Heidelberg (1816-18) and Berlin (1818-31). He died in Berlin, during a cholera epidemic, on Nov. 14, 1831. He was an idealist philosopher who has influenced many areas of modern philosophy; his strongest influence was on Karl Marx, and he had a negative influence on Søren Kierkegaard , whose rebellion against his objective systematizing began the school of existentialism.
Hegel wrote books on philosophy, religion, and history. His most important works include the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807), the

    - Introduction to Hegel, from University of California, Davies. German philosopher. Born at Stuttgart, Hegel studied at TŸbingen, where his contemporaries included Schelling and the poet Hšlderlin. After holding positions as a tutor he went to Jena in 1801 as a Privatdozent in philosophy. While in Jena he collaborated with Schelling in editing the Kritisches Journal der Philosophie , to which he contributed many articles. Promoted to a chair in 1805, he then was forced to leave Jena because of the Napoleonic war, became editor of a newspaper, and from 1807 spent eight years as director of the Gymnasium in NŸrnberg. In 1816 he became professor of philosophy at Heidelberg . Two years later he succeded Fichte as a professor in Berlin and entered into his most famous and influential period. Hegel attracted great numbers of foreign students to Berlin, and had an unparalleled influence on German philosophy in the 19th century. He was also the central philosophical influence on Marx and Engels , and on English pilosophy in the absolut idealist phrase, and although his reputation in the Anglo-American world has suffered periods of eclipse, he continues to be a focal point for many thinkers.

Hegel
created a vast speculative and idealistic philosophy, where truth is found not in the part but in the whole. Nature is an organic whole shot through with rationality akin to the reason in ourselves. Hegel's famous "dialectic" is an organic process of growth and development in three stages: beginning, advance and resolution. It has two sides: the rational patterns that determine all growth in the world and the logical form of reason. Each person is both a one and a many, a coexistence of opposites (unity and diversity). Self-consciousness (the self as subject knowing the self as object) requires mutuality - social interaction with others. And our minds have two functions: the understanding distinguishes between things, and reason synthesizes them. There are three stages of mind: subjective (concerned with the individual), objective (including customs and beliefs of communities), and absolute (Spirit expressing itself through art, religion, and philosophy). All phases of the dialectical process are brought together in the final unity of Absolute mind.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, 1770 - 1831
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a great German philosopher and a philosophical predecessor of the New England Transcendentalists. His philosophical system is based on a dialectical method in which new meaning is arrived at through thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. He emphasized the Mind or Spirit ( Geist ) as the only real, free, and self-conscious agent in which all individuals participate and which continually progresses, through self-exercise, to become absolute. The Transcendentalists encountered the ideas of Hegel mainly through the writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , though some adherentsmost notably W. T. Harris had a more direct connection as prominent figures in the St. Louis Hegelian school. Amos Bronson Alcott , though he disdained the logical demands of philosophy, highly respected Hegel. Ralph Waldo Emerson 's view of the progress of the Over-Soul toward the integration of mind and nature through human culture owes something to Hegel's idea of history as the dialectical process of Absolute Mind becoming itself. Hegel has been written about as follows by Octavius Brooks Frothingham , the first historian of American Transcendentalism
The church, taking the hint, put in its claim to patronage. It needed protection against the rationalism that was coming up; and such protection the majesty of Hegel vouchsafed to offer. Faith and philosophy formed a new alliance. Orthodox professors gave in their loyalty to the man who taught that "God was in process of becoming," and the man who taught that "God was in process of becoming" welcomed the orthodox professors to the circle of his disciples. He was more orthodox than the orthodox; he gave the theologians new explanations of their own dogmas, and supplied them with arguments against their own foes. Trinity, incarnation, atonement, redemption, were all interpreted and justified, to the complete satisfaction of the ecclesiastical powers.
