Georg W. F. Hegel was not an existentialist, but without Hegel it is possible Søren Kierkegaard 's works would not be as well-known or influential. Kierkegaard wrote in opposition to Hegel using Hegel as a symbol of all things wrong with classic Cartesian philosophy. This document attempts to outline the basic concepts put forth by Hegel, recognizing Hegel's influence upon modern schools of thought.
Biography
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born 27 August 1770, in Stuttgart, Swabia. Beethoven was also born in 1770; the nineteenth century was destined to be a great period in Germany's cultural history. Hegel's father, Georg Ludwig Hegel, worked in the department of finance for the Duchy of Württemberg. Hegel was the oldest of three children, and therefore bore a great deal of responsibility. Hegel's mother died when he was just eleven, resulting in even greater responsibilities for the young Hegel.

The Hegelian dialectic involves a struggle between two extremely opposed cultural forcesthe thesis and antithesiswhich are then resolved to form a synthesis. The goal of the dialectic is to arrive at the ultimate synthesis, which Hegel calls the absolute idea, at which point the spirit will have resolved the dialectic between the temporal and the eternal. Hegel's major works include The Phenomenology of Spirit ), The Philosophy of History

Kritisches Journal der Philosophie. Bamberger Zeitung. The impression which Hegel made in Germany was at one time almost overpowering. His philoso- phy swept away all other philosophies, Philosophy. and before he died it began to make Leben Jesu Christliche Glattbenslehre (1840), with the result that the Hegelian school was divided into three groups, called the right, the left, and the center. The adherents of the right (G. A. Gabler, H. T. W. Hinrichs, K. T. Goschel) represented supernaturalism; those of the left (Strauss, Page 201 Page 202 Page 203 Page 204 ... Theoretically, the Roman Catholic Church still holds to the old severe legislation, and as late as 1878 Leo XIII confirmed a ruling of the cardinal vicar based on these principles in relation to those who attended Protestant services in Rome. But the altered position of the Church in modern times permits only the imposition of ecclesiastical penalties. A number of decisions of the Congregation of the Holy Office and of local councils, it is true, still forbid absolutely any communicatio in ditvinis with heretics, such as attendance at Protestant services (for the purpose of worship), and extend as far as possible even to the avoidance of sending children to Protestant schools.

Hear a sample from Plato Hegel created a vast speculative and idealistic philosophy, where truth is found not in the part but in the whole . Nature is an organic whole shot through with rationality akin to the reason in ourselves. Hegel's famous "dialectic" is an organic process of growth and development in three stages: beginning, advance and resolution. It has two sides: the rational patterns that determine all growth in the world and the logical form of reason. Each person is both a one and a many, a coexistence of opposites (unity and diversity). Self-consciousness (the self as

    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, 1770-1831
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, perhaps the greatest of the German idealist philosophers, was born at Stuttgart, August 27, 1770. Hegel studied theology at Tübingen, where he met Schelling and Hölderlin, was a family tutor in Berne (1793) and Frankfurt-am-Main (1796), and in 1801 as privatdozent at Jena, edited with Schelling the Kritische Journal der Philosophie (1802-1803), in which he outlined his system with its emphasis on reason rather than the Romantic intuitionism of Schelling, which he attacked in The Phenomenology of Mind (1807). He had been appointed to an extraordinary professorship at Jena, but the Napoleonic victory there (1806) closed the University and Hegel became editor of a Bamburg newspaper and, from 1808 to 1816, had master of a Nuremberg school, where he instructed the unfortunate boys in a potted version of his, the most complicated of all philosophical systems. In his second great work, The Science of Logic (1812, 1816), he set out his famous dialectical Logic and in the

HEGEL: AN OVERVIEW While the English were pushing ahead an empirical doctrine of evolution through accidental natural causes, the Germans were developing, through the primary inspiration of Hegel, an "idealist" doctrine of evolution through the will of some great transcendent will (the world Spirit). Hegel was clearly a Platonistseeing all history, all human events as "guided" by this powerful spirit. This task of learning or of science was to Hegel (and the Hegelians after him) therefore not just to collect facts, but to discern the particular movement of this guiding hand in the midst of such facts.
HIS LIFE AND WORKS For a while he was strongly influenced by the philosophy of Kantespecially the notion that the real basis of Christianity was not in the legalistic religious doctrines evolved over the centuries by the Christian churchbut in the inherent moral "Reason" contained in the teachings and example of Jesus. But ultimately it was not the "moral reason" of Jesus that inspired Hegelbut instead the idea that, in and through Jesus as revelation of the divine, the Spirit of God had spoken to the human heart of eternal truths. These were much loftier and idealistic concepts than Kant's moral principles.
Hegel Begins to Stray from Kantianism
Thus in the late 1790s Hegel wrote a treatise (not published until 1907) entitled
