Martin Heidegger : Between Good and Evil
by Rudiger Safranski, Ewald Osers (Translator). Heidegger's writings are turgid and difficult, and a layperson who approaches them in order to gain an idea of how the author influenced twentieth century thought is likely to be frustrated by their impenetrability. Safranski's biography is a valuable resource, providing an accessible and actually rather detailed account of the evolution of Heidegger's ideas. He also does an excellent job at elucidating the tricky topic of the relationship between his philosophy and his Nazi sympathies before and during World War II. He treats the philosopher fairly and with a detachedness that fits the subject very well... anonymous review Click here to learn more about this book

Heidegger's Crisis: Philosophy and Politics in Nazi Germany , by Hans Sluga (Cambridge, MA: Harvard, 1993).
Post-World War II philosophy, like Postwar politics, has been fundamentally shaped by the work of a seminary dropout. Stalin spent several years at the Tiflis Theological Seminary reading radical Marxist propaganda, until he was expelled in 1899 for failing to take examinations. Likewise, Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), granddaddy of existentialism, was originally destined for the Roman Catholic priesthood, and his earliest works were studies of scholastic philosophy. Julien Benda was more literally accurate than he might have imagined when he wrote of the trahison des clercs. One of the many virtues of Hugo Ott's recent biography of Heidegger is the prominence given to the philosopher's thorny relationship with the "system of Catholicism." This, together with what Heidegger called the "failure of the rectorship" at Freiburg, provide the coordinates of Heidegger's political and intellectual life. Heidegger began as a "postulant who sought entry to the Society of Jesus, [a] student of Catholic theology and lecturer in Christian (which is to say, Catholic) philosophy..., whose staunchly Catholic origins - his father having been sexton at Messkirch - were clear beyond a shadow of doubt" (p. 98). Personal and academic conflicts with Catholic scholars and officials, however, left Heidegger permanently disabled by a bitter anticlericalism. His marriage to a Protestant doubtless exercised some influence. Philosophi-cally, he came increasingly under the influence of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology. As a result of these intellectual and personal transformations, sometime between 1917 and 1919, Heidegger "abandoned the faith of his birth."

After studying with Husserl , Martin Heidegger undertook an academic career in Germany, lecturing with great success both in Marburg and at the University of Freiburg, where he served as Rector in 1933-34. During this period, Heidegger not only cooperated with the educational policies of the National Socialist government but also offered it his enthusiastic public support. As a result, Heidegger was suspended from all teaching duties in the post-war era from 1945 to 1950. The nature and extent of his sympathies for Nazi ideology remain matters of some dispute. Heidegger's Sein und Zeit Being and Time ) (1927) applied the methods of phenomenology to ontology , in an effort to comprehend the meaning of "Being" both in general and as it appears concretely. This led Heidegger to a conception of human existence Dasein inauthenticity Heidegger's most familiar themes are evident in The Basic Problems of Phenomenology (1927) and Introduction to Metaphysics "Hegel and the Greeks" is a sample of Heidegger's reflections on the history of philosophy.

Heidegger, Martin
The early philosophical career of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), culminating in the publication of Sein und Zeit Being and Time ), is dominated by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's old question, Why is there something rather than nothing? Heidegger's idea is that the philosophical tradition has lost the sense of this question. Being, like Nothing, is an empty category. There are no conditions in which it makes sense to speak of it. It is not a philosophical problem, unless it is just the problem of the copula, the "is." The history of philosophy, or of ontology or metaphysics, is, Heidegger likes to say, the history of the "forgetfulness of being."
There is also a sense, however, in which Being is not forgotten at all but is, rather, always already understood, and this understanding is what characterizes our relationship with the world around us, our being-in-the-world. It is this fundamental, pre-theoretical understanding that Heidegger tries to clarify in Being and Time by means of a phenomenological analysis of our everydayness, that is, a descriptive account of how it is with us, what it is like, in our everyday world. Heidegger's idea is that our relationship with the world is not one of knowing; that is, it does not consist in having things in view. The world is not made of objects present before us or before our conceptual gaze. We belong to the world, are in it and involved with it. We are not spectators at a passing show. Rather, things surround usthey are what Heidegger calls "ready-at-hand"and our relation to them is one of practical familiarity, or knowing what they are for, rather than one of theoretical interest, or knowing what they are as such. Philosophy quarrels over the existence of the world, but what matters to us is not the existence of the world but our ontological involvement with it.

As a student at Freiburg, Heidegger was influenced by the neo-Kantianism of Heinrich Rickert and the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl . In 1923 he became professor at Marburg, where he wrote and published the only completed part of his major work, Sein und Zeit (1927; tr. Being and Time, 1962). On the basis of this work Heidegger was called (1928) to Freiburg to succeed Husserl in the chair of philosophy, which he occupied until his retirement in 1951. He actively supported Adolf Hitler during the dictator's first years in power, and after World War II was banned from teaching and publishing for five years. Although generally considered a founder of existentialism , Heidegger vehemently rejected the association, just as he came to reject Husserl's phenomenology. Heidegger's fundamental concern, as announced in

Heidegger, Martin Identity and Difference . Translated by Joan Stambaugh. iv, 146 p. (est.). 1969, 2002 Paper COBE $14.00tx 0-226-32378-1 Spring 2002 Identity and Difference consists of English translations and the original German versions of two little-known lectures given in 1957 by Martin Heidegger, "The Principle of Identity" and "The Onto-theo-logical Constitution of Metaphysics." Both lectures discuss the difficult problem of the nature of identity in the history of metaphysics. A helpful introduction and a list of references are also provided by the translator, Joan Stambaugh. "Stambaugh's new translation of is a welcome addition to the growing body of English translations of Heidegger. The special merit of Stambaugh's work is that the translator was a student of Heidegger's and was able to prepare this translation in consultation with him. Her work should be particularly well received in view of the very poor quality of the previous translation of the same work, published for some reason under the title Essays in Metaphysics ."Stanley O.
