"...any attempt to make the thought of Hutcheson more widely known is to be welcomed." Reid Studies vol. 3 no. 2
Francis Hutcheson (1694 - 1746) A seminal figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, Hutcheson was the first man to lecture in Scots rather than Latin. It was Hutcheson who coined the phrase "greatest good for the greatest number". His intellectual influence extend to such major figures as Kant, Hume and Adam Smith. His other principal works include An Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue (1725), and System of Moral Philosophy On the Nature and Conduct of the Passions is a work dealing with the bases of morality and virtue, both public and private. Hutcheson argues that the natural inclination of the human being is to be virtuous, since the pleasures of being virtuous are the greatest we can experience. Individual human beings have a common inbuilt morality because of the human constitution. In addition to the five senses (sight, smell etc) he believed there was a "moral sense," both equal and complementary to these five. The picture he paints is of a human mentality positively geared to harmonious society, which stumbles and fails only when selfish interest gets in the way. Selfish interest though, was for him only a secondary phenomenon, a failure of the system, which can be corrected if only people could be brought to realize their own nature and the nature of their senses.

Francis Hutcheson
Francis Hutcheson was born on 8 August 1694 in the north of Ireland. The son of a Presbyterian minister whose own father was an emigrant from Scotland, he entered the University of Glasgow in 1710, and took his MA in 1712. Hutcheson returned to Ireland in 1718 where he was licensed as a minister and accepted an invitation to start a dissenting academy in Dublin, where he remained for the next ten years. In1725 he published his best-known work , An Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue , revised editions of which appeared in 1726, 1729 and 1738. In 1728, he completed An Essay on the Nature and Conduct of the Passions and Affections. With Illustrations upon the Moral Sense ,  which was issued in a revised form in 1742. The widespread interest these works generated led to Hutcheson's being elected Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow in 1729. He had great impact as a teacher, Adam Smith among others recording warm affection for the "never to be forgotten Dr Hutcheson".  In the late 1730s and 1740s, Hutcheson met and corresponded with Hume, who presented some challenging criticism of his work. Hutcheson in turn stimulated the development of Hume's philosophical position but he did not support his bid for a professorship at Edinburgh in 1745. In 1742 his Philosophiae moralis institutio compendiaria

30. HUTCHESON, Francis. An inquiry into the original of our idea of beauty and virtue.
[London : 1725] Sp Coll 986 It is generally acknowledged that during the first half of the eighteenth century a profound change was wrought in the theory of art and natural beauty. In England, the notion of a separate and autonomous discipline devoted solely to art and to beauty came into being through the concept of "aesthetic disinterestedness". In addition, emphasis in the theory of art shifted from object to subject - from the work of art to the perceiver and critic. Hutcheson, who played no small part in effecting this profound change, in this book gives the basic premise of his aesthetic theory: "the word beauty is taken for the idea raised in us , and a sense of beauty for our power of receiving this idea ."
