25. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804)
Biography and overview of his philosophy.
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) Immanuel Kant is one of the most influential philosophers in the history of western philosophy. His contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics have had a profound impact on almost every philosophical movement that followed him. This portion of the encyclopedia entry will focus on his metaphysics and epistemology in one of his most important works, The Critique of Pure Reason . (All references will be to the A (1781) and B(1787) edition pages in Werner Pluhar's translation. Indianapolis: Hackett, 1996.) A large part of Kant's work addresses the question "What can we know?" The answer, if it can be stated simply, is that our knowledge is constrained to mathematics and the science of the natural, empirical world. It is impossible, Kant argues, to extend knowledge to the supersensible realm of speculative metaphysics. The reason that knowledge has these constraints, Kant argues, is that the mind plays an active role in constituting the features of experience and limiting the mind's access to the empirical realm of space and time. Historical Background to Kant In order to understand Kant's position, we must understand the philosophical background that he was reacting to. First, I will present a brief overview of his predecessor's positions with a brief statement of Kant's objections, then I will return to a more detailed exposition of Kant's arguments. There are two major historical movements in the early modern period of philosophy that had a significant impact on Kant: Empiricism and Rationalism. Kant argues that both the method and the content of these philosophers' arguments contain serious flaws. A central epistemological problem for philosophers in both movements was determining how we can escape from within the confines of the human mind and the immediately knowable content of our own thoughts to acquire knowledge of the world outside of us. The Empiricists sought to accomplish this through the senses and

Important Note: After the Introduction, each of the above sections commences with a summary. These will give the reader an idea of what topics are discussed in more detail in each section. They can also be read together to form a briefbird's-eye-view of Kant's theory of aesthetics and teleology. Kant is an 18th century German philosopher whose work initated dramatic changes in the fields of epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, and teleology. Like many Enlightenment thinkers, he holds our mental faculty of reason in high esteem; he believes that it is our reason that invests the world we experience with structure. In his works on aesthetics and teleology, he argues that it is our faculty of judgment that enables us to have experience of beauty and grasp those experiences as part of an ordered, natural world with purpose.

32. The Proceedings Of The Friesian School
An electronic journal of philosophy, promoting the principles and the further development of the Critical Philosophy of immanuel kant, Arthur Schopenhauer, and the Friesian School, i.e. Jakob Fries, Leonard Nelson, Rudolf Otto, Karl Popper, F.A. Hayek, etc. HTML translation by the Editor
The Proceedings of the Friesian School,
Fourth Series
Taking up again the tradition of the Friesian School , this is a non-peer-reviewed electronic journal and archive of philosophy, inaugurated on line July 6, 1996, four years before the end of the 20th Century , just as the brilliant, courageous, prolific, and little appreciated German philosopher Leonard Nelson (1882-1927) started his Abhandlungen der Fries'schen Schule, Neue Folge , attempting a "Reformation of Philosophy," four years after the beginning of the 20th Century. The essays at this site, addressing many philosophical, historical, scientific, religious, economic, legal, and political issues, range from the fully annotated and technical to more informal and discursive discussions, often originally written for undergraduate classes. Many items therefore should be intelligible to those not familiar with all the arcana of academic philosophy, or with academic philosophy at all. This is done deliberately, since the trend, by which philosophy has obscured and esotericized itself and mostly dropped out of popular and literate culture, should be resisted. Work of a similar range, with the appropriate philosophical orientation and grounding, is acceptable and desired. Submissions will be considered that relate to the persons, issues, and history illustrated in the following statements, biographical sketches, and

34. Sabatieu
Epistemology research work which explains how our world is build up, how our mind is working, and what our goals have to be.
SABATIEU Epistemology in the tradition of Immanuel Kant by Uwe Flemming Mr. Uwe Flemming`s philosophical work “Sabatieu” is very intelligently written. The ambitious young man attempts to compare Immanuel Kant`s Theory of mutual dependency between transcendental apperceptions and basic awareness with the central processing unit of a computer and its numerous algebraic operations. In our developing society such thoughts can be looked upon as incentive for further research, especially as regards “Neurophysiology, Philosophy of the Mind, Evolutionary theory of Cognition, etc.” That is why Mr. Flemming`s ideas are both interesting and important. Pertaining to the subjects mentioned, there might be a new “latest” level in the near future. Dr. Erhard BUSEK Former Vice-Chancellor of Austria and Head of the ministry of the sciences Concerning Sabatieu The main subjects of this research are as follows: What does the process of cognition comprise? From which the following question arises: What is our cognitive faculty made of? From which the next question arises: What can we achieve with our cognitive faculty?
