the possibility of human knowledge presupposes the active participation of the human mind The monumental Kritik der reinen Vernunft Critique of Pure Reason fully spells out the conditions for mathematical, scientific, and metaphysical knowledge in its "Transcendental Aesthetic," "Transcendental Analytic," and "Transcendental Dialectic," but Kant found it helpful to offer a less technical exposition of the same themes in the Prolegomena to any Future Metaphysic ) (1783). Carefully distinguishing judgments as analytic or synthetic and as a priori or a posteriori , Kant held that the most interesting and useful varieties of human knowledge rely upon synthetic a priori judgments , which are, in turn, possible only when the mind determines the conditions of its own experience. Thus, it is we who impose the forms of space and time upon all possible sensation in mathematics, and it is we who render all experience coherent as scientific knowledge governed by traditional notions of substance and causality by applying the pure concepts of the understanding to all possible experience.

PERPETUAL PEACE clausula salvatoria the author desires formally and emphatically to deprecate herewith any malevolent interpretation which might be placed on his words.
SECTION I
CONTAINING THE PRELIMINARY ARTICLES FOR PERPETUAL PEACE AMONG STATES 1. "No Treaty of Peace Shall Be Held Valid in Which There Is Tacitly Reserved Matter for a Future War" Otherwise a treaty would be only a truce, a suspension of hostilities but not peace, which means the end of all hostilitiesso much so that even to attach the word "perpetual" to it is a dubious pleonasm. The causes for making future wars (which are perhaps unknown to the contracting parties) are without exception annihilated by the treaty of peace, even if they should be dug out of dusty documents by acute sleuthing. When one or both parties to a treaty of peace, being too exhausted to continue warring with each other, make a tacit reservation ( reservatio mentalis) in regard to old claims to be elaborated only at some more favorable opportunity in the future, the treaty is made in bad faith, and we have an artifice worthy of the casuistry of a Jesuit. Considered by itself, it is beneath the dignity of a sovereign, just as the readiness to indulge in this kind of reasoning is unworthy of the dignity of his minister. But if, in consequence of enlightened concepts of statecraft, the glory of the state is placed in its continual aggrandizement by whatever means, my conclusion will appear merely academic and pedantic.

    by Immanuel Kant

The text of this work is available here in two versions, a German text from the complete works edited by Georg Reimer (1905) and an English text, which is a recent translation (1998) by Ian Johnston of Malaspina University-College, Nanaimo, British Columbia (see menu at the bottom of this page). The German text is unchanged except for the correction of a few typographical errors in the printing and for the change from the old Gothic script to a standard modern alphabet convertible to HTML. In both versions the Table of Contents also been altered slightly (to include the dedication and the preface) and moved to the front, before the dedication and the preface, so that the reader can more easily select particular portions of the text. And all footnotes have been moved to the end. The English text contains links to Kant's footnotes, together with links to some additional footnotes provided by the translator (the latter are not provided in the German text). There are also occasional references to two earlier translators of Kant's text: Stanley L. Jacki and William Hastie. The translator of the present text would like to acknowledge the great help he has received from these two earlier translations.

An admirer of Rousseau , Kant's work gave rise to the Idealist school ( Fichte Hegel and Schopenhauer Kant was of the view that while the existence of God could not be proven, we ought to come to a belief in God's existence by way a "logical understanding." Kant concluded that this world was not sufficient in itself, that an external power, which he identified with God, was a regulative necessity; and that God was a requisite for morality, it gives meaning to our life here on earth. The existence of God was, for Kant, but one of three postulates of morality, the other two being freedom of the will, and immortality of the soul. These moral axioms, unprovable as they are, existed for Kant simply because they were the sine qua non of the moral life. (So much for the notion that morality is something that arises from our own character, from our own intelligence: - I would argue that the acceptance of an external, all powerful, being reduces us to mere servants; and, thus, there is no need for morals, there is but only the need to obey.)

References Introduction Critiques. It was in this so-called "pre-critical" period that Kant developed and articulated a substantive philosophy of mind. His critical writings, by contrast, are marked by skepticism and an unwillingness to advance substantive claims about mind. The substantive claims of the pre-critical period are interesting in their own right, and understanding why and how Kant came to reject them affords a deeper understanding of Kant’s mature skepticism. In the decades before the publication of the Critique of Pure Reason , Kant was a metaphysical dualist who offered a positive account of mind/body interaction. Thoughts of the True Estimation of Living Forces (1747), his first philosophical work, contains an argument that the mind/body problem presupposed several false and interrelated assumptions, all of which fell under the general view that the essential force of body is

    David Hume

Name: Immanuel Kant Dates: Born: April 22, 1724 in Konigsberg, Prussia Died: February 12, 1804 Biography: Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher who was responsible for much of what has developed in modern philosophy. His primary focus was to counter the skeptical arguments created by David Hume and thus provide a sounder basis for human knowledge. According to Kant, knowledge is possible because of the activity of the human mind. In essence, our minds impose form and structure on the information which our brains receive. Because it is we who cause our experiences to be coherent, it is possible for us to create synthetic, a priori judgments and these judgments allow for interesting forms of knowledge.

Hear a sample from Plato Before Kant , philosophers had debated for centuries whether knowledge is derived from experience or reason. Kant says that both views are partly right and partly wrong, that they share the same error; both believe that the mind and the world, reason and nature are separated from one another. Building on an insight from Hume , Kant says that our reason organizes our sense perception to produce knowledge. The mind is a creative force for understanding the manifold of new, unconceptualized sense impressions with which the world bombards us. And Kant says we cannot know the "thing-in-itself" - the object apart from our conceptualization of it.
