Immanuel Kant (1724-1804)
here for a list of Kant's works
Enormous amounts of secondary literature has been written on Immanuel Kant. The themes in Kant writings is centred on metaphysics, ethics, natural science. But also religion and education were main subjects for Kant. Both the impact of Kant was widespread and immense in his own lifetime, and the legacy is even more widespread and enormous. The amount of secondary literature on Kant is massive. ( Click here for a list of suggestions Epistemology and Metaphysics. One of Kant's greatest achievements is his reformulation and revolution of the classical views in metaphysics. Ever since Aristotle's definition of metaphysics, philosophers have thought that our minds were to comprehend things as they stood out. Kant's counter-intuitive move - known as the Copernican revolution - was to show that "things" (better: the manifold) had to conform to our minds. Kant's most influential work is by no doubt "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" (1781, 1787) in English: Critique of Pure Reason Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics . Six years after the Critique of Pure Reason he published a revised edition. Most English translations will therefore follow the academic terms of the two different versions. The first work is simple named the A-version, and the later is called the B-version. In German and English one will hit upon numbers like "A 521/B 549", whichin academic style clearly refer to the two different versions of Critique of Pure Reason.

Life Kant's Philosophy Other Works In addition to works on philosophy, Kant wrote a number of treatises on various scientific subjects, many in the field of physical geography. His most important scientific work was General Natural History and Theory of the Heavens (1755), in which he advanced the hypothesis of the formation of the universe from a spinning nebula, a hypothesis that later was developed independently by Pierre de Laplace. Among Kant's other writings are Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics (1783), Metaphysical Rudiments of Natural Philosophy (1786), Critique of Judgment (1790), and Religion Within the Boundaries of Pure Reason (1793). and of Jean-Jacques Rousseau 's sensibility for the moral law; his concept of the nature of a philosophical critique deepens in many ways the principles of method outlined in the Discourse on Method by Descartes, and his elaboration of the principles of practical reason sharpens the moral critique made by Rousseau. He was at the same time one of the most important predecessors of G. W. F. Hegel , whose much-discussed criticism of him marks the beginning of Kant's controversial philosophical reception.
Within the eighteenth century, Kant was a pivotal figure. He is regarded as a paragon of Enlightenment rationalism who set in place for later generations of literary critics a series of presuppositions about the autonomy of artworks, while his commitment to the ideals of freedom, to the notion of things-in-themselves, and to the concept of genius positions him squarely within the idealist branch of Romanticism. Today, Kant is recognized as the author of three of the most important works of modern philosophy: the Critique of Pure Reason

Philosophy of Immanuel Kant
Kant's philosophy is generally designated as a system of transcendental criticism tending towards Agnosticism in theology, and favouring the view that Christianity is a non-dogmatic religion. Privatdozent It is usual to distinguish two periods of Kant's literary activity. The first, the pre-critical period, extends from 1747 to 1781, the date of the epoch-making "Kritik der reinen Vernunft"; the second, the critical period, extends from 1781 to 1794. THE PRE-CRITICAL PERIOD Privatdozent . Besides these, in which he expounded and defended the current philosophy of Wolff, he published other treatises in which he applied that philosophy to problems of mathematics and physics. In 1770 appeared the work "De Mundi Sensibilis atque Intelligibilis Formis et Principiis" (On the Forms and Principles of the Sensible and Intelligible World), in which he shows for the first time a tendency to adopt an independent system of philosophy. The years from 1770 to 1780 were spent, as Kant himself tells us, in the preparation of the "Critique of Pure Reason". THE CRITICAL PERIOD It will be found most convenient to divide the study of Kant's critical philosophy into three portions, corresponding to the doctrines contained in his three "Critiques". We shall, therefore, take up successively (1) the doctrines of the "Critique of Pure Reason"; (2) the doctrines of the "Critique of Practical Reason"; (3) the doctrines of the "Critique of the Faculty of Judgment".

German philosopher who gave the name to the Age of Enlightenment ("Aufklarung" in German). He published his view of the universe in General History of Nature and Theory of the Heavens, 1755). In this work, he presented his nebular hypothesis of the formation of the solar system, proposed that the Milky Way was a lens-shaped collection of stars and one of many such "island universes," and suggested that tidal friction was slowing the rotation of the earth. In The Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science, 1786), he presented his views on the unity of natural forces. He also divided the world into two portions: the nominal (real and intelligible) and phenomenal (world of appearances). He presented his comprehensive philosophical system in Kritik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason, 1781), in which he also stated his antimonies of reason, or limits to human understanding. These consisted of the existence of God, free will, atomistic or continuous nature of matter, and creation or eternity of the universe. In 1787), he divided the study of nature into two forms: Naturbeschreibung (description of nature) and Naturgeschichte (history of nature). In order for Naturlehre to be Naturwissenschaft, he stated, it must be grounded on a priori first principles and must contain mathematics. Therefore, in his eyes, the only real natural science was mechanics.
