Ramon Llull Ramon Llull Palma de Mallorca 1233 ó 1235 - 1315 Escritor, filósofo, místico y misionero, viajero y divulgador, fue una de las figuras más interesantes de la Edad Media, creador de la corriente filosófica conocida como lulismo , cuya lógica fue expuesta en su obra Ars Magna La importancia actual de Llull radica en haber sido el creador de la lengua literaria catalana, en un momento en que las demás lenguas románicas se encontraban todavía balbucientes y todos los grandes tratados se escribían aún en latín, lengua que el propio Llull utilizó también en muchos de sus trabajos, así como el árabe. Escribió un gran número de obras, no todas publicadas, de las que nos han llegado unos 250 títulos . Llull as Computer Scientist or why LlulI Was One of Us Ton Sales Abstract. Crucial notions on which Computer Science is based originated in Ramon Llull (a l3th-century philosopher from Majorca). Here we explore some of his original insights -and his plausible inspiration sources- and how these ideas have been available to us by way of Leibniz (and others). Introduction Something unusual has happened to Ramon Llull (Raimundus Lullus, 1232-1316), the franciscan thinker from Majorca. He has been at the same time derided and hailed as a philosopher. He has been instrumental in creating our foundational insights as computer scientists and logicians, yet he occupies a very minor place in the histories of Philosophy, Mathematics or Logic. He was one of the first philosophers to claim a logical basis for religious belief yet he has been considered a source of alchemy, cabbalistics and mysticism. He is considered a conceited eccentric fool and -just read Martin Gardner's 1958 piece- a maze of confused thinking, but such indictment hardly squares with the undeniable fact that he had foresights which anticipated developments 700 years in the future. So, what is the truth? and what is the man? 2 Some basic Computer Science concepts When George Boole tried in 1847 and 1854 to find out -and formalize- the "laws of thought", he basically conceived "thought" as a set of algebraically-expressed concept manipulations. Llull in 1274 also did, but unlike Boole he felt he not only needed a set of allowable manipulations (combinations) but also a finite set of elementary truths to begin with. These he called "dignities" (a plural to translate the greek "axioms") or "absolute principles", nine in number, plus 45 additional basic concepts (in groups of nine) he called "relative principles" (including consistency or contradiction), "rules" (including quantity or modality), "subjects", "virtues" and "vices". He added them basic manipulation rules (essentially a relational calculus) and a validation procedure (basically, expanding

The Freiburg manuscript database: Ramon Llull im WWW Ever since its foundation in 1957, the Raimundus-Lullus-Institut at the University of Freiburg has been building up a microfilm collection of manuscripts of Ramon Llull's Latin works. This unique collection, which is now nearly complete, comprises more than 2100 microfilms, including copies of a great number of printed editions and Catalan manuscripts as well. In order to make this collection more widely accessible, the Raimundus-Lullus-Institut initiated the Internet project Ramon Llull im WWW in the spring of 2000. It is being carried out in cooperation with the University Computer Centre and the University Library of Freiburg, and partly sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft . We are planning to digitalize our entire archive of microfilms of Ramon Llull's Latin works and to present them on the Internet within the next three or four years. All in all, the database will contain around 750 manuscripts, of which more than 200 from various European libraries were already available by January 2003. The manuscript database is part of FREIMORE ( Freiburger Multimedia Object Repository ), which has been established as the central digital library system of the University of Freiburg since 2001.

BREU CONSIDERACIÓ SOBRE LA REGLA B ARS LUL·LIANA Esteve Jaulent Ars Ars Ars li permetrà formular moltes preguntes sobre els tema estudiats, i també comprovar la veritat o falsedat de les possibles respostes.120 Llull diu que l'artista, quan empra l' Ars , barreja uns principis i unes regles i amb els resultats obtinguts amb aquests mitjans resol les preguntes. Ho fa, diu el beat, de tal manera que sempre obté com a conclusió una proposició afirmativa i una altra negativa, donant-li l' Ars també els camins per esbrinar la veritat o falsedat d'ambdues(3). L' Ars és, doncs, un instrument general per resoldre preguntes. No és aquesta breu Nota el lloc més propici per a tractar del funcionament de l' Ars(4). Ens interessa en aquestes línies només esventrar el sentit d'una de les regles del sistema lul·lià, la coneguda com Regla B, molt emprada en les diverses aplicacions de l' Ars Llull defineix Déu regles, que són les Déu preguntes que resumeixen totes les preguntes possibles que es poden fer sobre qualsevol tema. Per això les anomena "regles generals del preguntar" i les simbolitza amb les deu lletres B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K i L. Quan, per exemple, pregunta "si existeix algun enteniment", Llull s'ajuda amb aquesta regla B per respondre que sí, i explica que es recorda, s'entén i s'estima millor el fet de què existeixi un enteniment de que no(5). En un altre lloc, Llull preguntarà "si en Déu hi han actes propis intrínsecs d'entendre, per mitjà de l'enteniment, i actes de "bonificar", mitjançant la "bondat", i respondrà per l'afirmativa, sempre, però, examinant el propi acte de l'entendre humà, doncs en afirmar l'existència d'aquests actes intrínsecs en Déu, l'enteniment, dirà el mestre mallorquí, es troba en major grandesa de bondat, més d'acord amb la voluntat i la memòria, més pràctic, i per tant més lluny de la ignorància i més posseïdor de l'hàbit de la ciència(6). In addition to the Ars Magna , the Russian followers of Lull appear to have had a particular preference for the Cabbalah in this great philosophical conglomerate. The esteem in which they held the Cabbalah is already evidenced by the expensively and lovingly produced binding of the Russian manuscript from 1725 here shown, the contents of which is announced as a summary of the great science of the Cabbalah. In the Middle Ages, too, Lull's works were held in high regard and they have survived in beautiful manuscript copies. Although the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica manuscript copy from the beginning of the fifteenth century here shown does not contain much of cabbalistical interest, it does offer the Book of Nature, in which the principles of the physical world are thoroughly researched after the characteristic Lullian fashion.
