    John Locke (1632-1704)
    "Though the familiar use of the Things about us, takes off our Wonder; yet it cures not our Ignorance."
    An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (III. vi. 9) "...he that will not give just occasion to think that all government in the world is the product only of force and violence, and that men live together by no other rules but that of beasts, where the strongest carries it...must of necessity find another rise of government, another original of political power..."
    -from The Second Treatise of Civil Government John Locke was an Oxford scholar, medical researcher and physician, political operative, economist and idealogue for a revolutionary movement, as well as being one of the great philosophers of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. His monumental Essay Concerning Human Understanding aims to determine the limits of human understanding. Earlier writers such as Chillingworth had argued that human understanding was limited, Locke tries to determine what those limits are. We can, he thinks, know with certainty that God exists. We can also know about morality with the same precision we know about mathematics, because we are the creators of moral and political ideas. In regard to natural substances we can know only the appearances and not the underlying realities which produce those appearances. Still, the atomic hypothesis with its attendant distinction between primary and secondary qualities is the most plausible available hypothesis. Locke's

    Earl of Shaftesbury,
    Anthony Ashley Cooper (1671- 1713)

    Anthony Ashley Cooper was the grandson of the first Earl of Shaftesbury. He was Locke's patron, and was himself educated under Locke's supervision. His weak health prevented him from following an active political career, and his life was mainly devoted to intellectual interests. After two or three unhappy years of school life at Winchester, he traveled abroad, chiefly in Italy, with a tutor. In early adulthood he lived in Holland, and in later life his health drove him to Italy once more. He was an ardent student of the classics, especially of Plato, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, a devotee of liberty of thought, and an amateur of art. His writings, penned between 1701 and 1712, were published in three volumes titled Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (1711); a revised and enlarged edition was ready at the time of his death in 1713. The essays include "A Letter Concerning Enthusiasm," "Sensus Communis, an essay on the Freedom of Wit and Humor," "Soliloquy, or Advice to an Author," "An Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit," "The Moralist, a Philosophical Rhapsody," Miscellaneous Reflections on the said Treatises, and other critical Subjects," A Notion of the Historical Draught or Tablature of the Judgment of Hercules, with a Letter concerning Design." The most important of these is "An Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit." He comments that the miscellaneous style of the collection was in vogue in his day.

    John Locke
    John Locke, 1632-1704, Englishphilosopher, political theorist, and founder of Empiricism. After studying medicine at Oxford,Locke served the Earl of Shaftesbury as a physician, and followed him toFrance in 1675. There he spent four years studying Continentalphilosophy, especially that of Descartes. On his return, Locke worked with Shaftesbury to block thesuccession of James, Duke of York, later James II, from thethrone a controversial issue since the Restoration of Charles II . They were unsuccessful, andboth were forced to flee England: Locke lived in Holland from1683 until James II's overthrow in 1689. In the following year appeared Locke's most important work, AnEssay Concerning Humane Understanding . The central concernof the Essay is epistemology, the means by which we cometo knowledge. Locke argued against the idea of "innate ideas,"arguing instead that the mind is analogous to a blank slate, a tabula rasa , on which the senses make impressions: theimportance of such experience in his philosophy is the origin ofthe term empirical Sensory experience, though, provides only one kind of idea,sensation;

    http://www.geocities.com/Athens/4753/locke.html
    Locke's Life Locke was born in Wrington in Somerset County of Britain. After attending Oxford University, Locke began to tutor the family of a very prominent man, Anthony Ashley Cooper, who eventually became the King of England. While Cooper was on the throne, Locke experienced power as well, but when Cooper was overthrown, Locke fled to mainland Europe. Running to and fro became the norm for Locke as political atmospheres and alliances constantly changed in Britain. When Locke finally settled down in Oates in Essex County, political and scholarly ties helped make him one of the most influential men of the 17th century. It was in Oates as well that Locke began writing philosophy. LOCKE'S WRITING Locke is best known for his Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690). On the more political side of things, Locke published Two Treatises of Government WORKS ON INTERNET Locke's Philosophy EMPIRICISM Locke was the founder of a group of philosophers whose philosophy came to be known as British Empiricism . Empiricism is basically the belief that we must use our senses for philosophy. Empiricists believed that one had to use his or her senses in acquiring information, and therefore could not use only reason. Locke believed that when we are born, our mind is a clean slate of sorts, and that the

    http://www.geocities.com/alcaide_econoh/john_locke.htm
    JOHN LOCKE (1632-1704) El trabajo de Child Breves observaciones, de 1668, fue responsable de que John Locke, filósofo de la libertad y fundador del empirismo moderno, empezara a discutir cuestiones económicas. Por aquella época, el protector, paciente y amigo de Locke, Anthony Ashley Cooper, que más tarde sería el primer conde de Shaftesbury, fue nombrado ministro de Hacienda y, en su nombre, realizó Locke un memorándum exponiendo sus criterios acerca del interés y del sistema monetario. Este memorándum de 1668 fue publicado en una edición, corregida y aumentada en 1892 cuando volvía a debatirse la cuestión de la reducción del tipo legal máximo de interés, junto con los problemas de la reforma monetaria. El folleto de 1692, que lleva por título Consideraciones acerca de la disminución del interés y del aumento del valor del dinero - la última frase se refiere a la adulteración o depreciación- fue seguido tres años más tarde por otros dos que trataban principalmente de las cuestiones monetarias. Las Consideraciones de Locke, ostensiblemente dedicadas a dos problemas específicos, contienen bastantes ideas generales, aunque en forma desordenada y difusa para constituir un tratado que toca los temas más descollantes de la economía. En su tiempo, se había producido una importante literatura económica y la gran biblioteca de Locke, de varios miles de volúmenes, incluía 115 títulos de economía. Esta disciplina no tenía por entonces ni nombre, ni método especial, ni posición propia dentro de la jerarquía de las ciencias, aunque Petty. con su «aritmética política», había intentado proporcionarle las tres cosas. Lo que los escritores ingleses habían de llamar economía política» era probablemente para Locke una parte periférica de la más amplia ciencia de la política.

    Lo
    Locke, John (1632-1704) English materialist philosophy of the period of the Restoration; developed a materialist theory of knowledge which opposed Descartes ' "innate ideas" and declared experience to be the sole source of all ideas, - but via the influence of external objects on the sense organs (ideas of sensation) or alternatively through attention being directed to the activity of the soul (ideas of Reflection ); developed theory of the State, including the proposition that people should change the social system if it does not provide people with the proper opportunity for education and development. John Locke was an active participant in the political struggles of the Restoration, Whigs vs. Tories and Catholic vs. Protestant, eventually leading a compromise between the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy and to a relatively stable system of government in which Church was separated from the State and the monarchy placated the people and left the business of government largely to the Parliament. On the Nature of Human Understanding was written in 1689, about the time Newton began his work on mechanics, providing an almost comprehensive mechanical view of the Universe, and in the wake of the Revolution of 1688, which removed the Catholic absolutist James II, and replaced him with William III, Prince of Orange, consolidating the bourgeois form of government established by the Restoration after the English Civil War.
