Nicolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) The first great political philosopher of the Renaissance was Nicolo Machiavelli (1469-1527). His famous treatise, The Prince, stands apart from all other political writings of the period insofar as it focus on the practical problems a monarch faces in staying in power, rather than more speculative issues explaining the foundation of political authority. As such, it is an expression of realpolitik, that is, governmental policy based on retaining power rather than pursuing ideals.

Dedication
Those who strive to obtain the good graces of a prince are accustomed to come before him with such things as they hold most precious, or in which they see him take most delight; whence one often sees horses, arms, cloth of gold, precious stones, and similar ornaments presented to princes, worthy of their greatness. Desiring therefore to present myself to your Magnificence with some testimony of my devotion towards you, I have not found among my possessions anything which I hold more dear than, or value so much as, the knowledge of the actions of great men, acquired by long experience in contemporary affairs, and a continual study of antiquity; which, having reflected upon it with great and prolonged diligence, I now send, digested into a little volume, to your Magnificence. And although I may consider this work unworthy of your countenance, nevertheless I trust much to your benignity that it may be acceptable, seeing that it is not possible for me to make a better gift than to offer you the opportunity of understanding in the shortest time all that I have learnt in so many years, and with so many troubles and dangers; which work I have not embellished with swelling or magnificent words, nor stuffed with rounded periods, nor with any extrinsic allurements or adornments whatever, with which so many are accustomed to embellish their works; for I have wished either that no honour should be given it, or else that the truth of the matter and the weightiness of the theme shall make it acceptable.

Political theorist
INTRODUCTION
Nicolo Machiavelli was one of the most influencial people of the Renaissance.
BACKGROUND
Machiavelli lived from 1469-1527 and was born in Florence, Italy. As well as an Italian statesman, and a Florentine patriot, he was the head of the Second Chancery at the age of twenty-nine. Nicolo was a senior civil servant but when the republic was overthrown, he was imprisoned and tortured. Machiavelli was released in 1513 and retired to work on his major writings. He had a preoccupation with military affairs.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Machiavelli carried out diplomatic missions in France, Germany, and Italy. He was a political philospher. Machiavelli wrote books that were like handbooks for rulers. His most famous book was Il Principe The Prince ) which was concerned with one ruler who governs a mass of subjects. In this book his philosophy was that a state should be unified, orderly, and in balance; that people should be happy, honorable, secure, and strong; that rulers should do whatever they needed to enforce order. He wrote methods of how a ruler could gain power. Machiavelli was also a political and military theorist, a playwright, a diplomat, a military planner, and wrote many books and poems. Among his writings are

His name has become also synonymous with politicking behind the scenes and all sorts of evil and manipulative practices. His work, Del Principe (usually translated as The Prince ) is a management primer for the leaders of the city states of the 16 th Century Italy. Machiavelli lived from 1469 to 1527 he was a practising statesman as well as a political theorist. He held various public offices in the Florentine City State but backed the wrong horse in the internal factions and rivalries and was exiled by the Medici's. He also wrote Discourses - advice on how to stay in power - and a history of Florence - in which he issued a call for Italian unity, and an end to foreign interventions. An acute observer of the contemporary political scene, he teaches that the acquisition of power and effective use of power may necessitate methods not in themselves desirable. His work is in a tradition of such works, arguing that the leader must retain power so that he or she can do the best thing for the people, the notion of the benevolent dictator. What distinguishes his work from that of Plato and others, is that he was ready to go into detail on how power can be gained and maintained. Here are three of his recommendations: ... a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred; because he can endure very well being feared whilst he is not hated, which will always be as long as he abstains from the property of his citizens and subjects and from their women. But when it is necessary for him to proceed against the life of someone, he must do it on proper justification and for manifest cause, but above all things he must keep his hands off the property of others, because men more quickly forget the death of their father than the loss of their patrimony.

NICOLO MACHIAVELLI (1469-1527), whose name has become synonymous with duplicity and cunning, was a respected statesman, historian, and political philosopher in Florence, Italy. Born into an aristocratic family, he grew up in the reign of Lorenzo de Medici at a time when Italy was divided into individual states. He entered government service and rose to prominence when the Florentine republic was proclaimed in 1498. He became secretary of the 10-man council that conducted the diplomatic negotiations and supervised the military. He established a native Florentine militia rather than using mercenaries and led this dedicated troupe to conquer Pisa. His duties included frequent trips to the courts of France, Switzerland, and Germany. During these trips he was introduced to strong nations united under a single prince and began to formulate his ideas of government. He was also acquainted with many Italian rulers and studied their political tactics first-hand. In 1511, when the Republic ended and the Medicis returned to power, Machiavelli was imprisoned and tortured. After his release, he retired to a small property outside Florence and devoted himself to writing. In 1513 he wrote The Prince (published posthumously in 1532) primarily to instruct the Medici how to retain their position. In it he describes practical ways a prince can acquire and maintain political power by controlling and manipulating his subjects. In 1525, he wrote

"A man who wishes to make a vocation of being good at all times will come to ruin among so many who are not good".
Nicolo' Machiavelli In his book The Prince (1513), Machiavelli writes his greatest known works. His details of how a prince should live, the qualities he should have, what he must do to maintain power in a position as such. This work was what made him famous, the general principles described would instruct any prince in how to be successful. For example he says "A prince therefore who desires to maintain himself must learn to be not always good, but to be so or not as necessity may require." Such statements define how a prince should live, in order to be successful. It's the aphorism that he uses as his weapons to influence. Machiavelli was a diplomat, aristocrat, and play-writer in the sixteenth century. He is well known in cultural poetics for his views on human nature. He asserts that the great majority of people are not good. He has received a great deal of criticism for his cynicism. For example, he suggests "that a morally good person would not remain long in any high office, because that person would have to compete with the mass of people who, he says, are basically bad. He believes their exists two strongholds in his life: The first being luck (ones fortune) and the second being one's virtues. During his lifetime, Machiavelli was looked upon as an immoral and deceitful person. He was known by the nickname "Old Nick" which derives from the popular nickname of the devil. Today, his reputation is greatly accepted in the politics of government were individuals mirror image

Machiavellism has become synonymous with treachery, intrigue, subterfuge, and tyranny. It has been even said that "Old Nick", the popular name of the
