Agrégé de philosophie à vingt ans. C'est un penseur particulièrement ouvert sur le monde, puisqu'il connut la plupart des pays d'Europe, les Etats-Unis, le Canada, l'Amérique du Sud, le Moyen-Orient et le Japon. Toujours curieux des lieux et des gens, il donnait de nombreuses conférences, et des cours comme les Gifford Lectures d'Aberdeen (publiées en français sous le titre Le Mystère de l'Être) ou les William James Lectures (La Dignité humaine). Il consacra sa vie à des activités variées, la philosophie au premier chef, le théâtre, puisqu'il écrivit une vingtaine de pièces, la critique dramatique dans plusieurs grandes revues (Nouvelle Revue Française, Europe, Nouvelles littéraires) et la musique : pianiste amateur, il lisait les partitions de musique comme des romans, improvisait, et composait des mélodies pour chant et piano. De son vivant, il exerça une influence philosophique considérable, et depuis son entrée dans l'Eglise Catholique en 1929 il fut considéré comme le principal représentant de l'Existentialisme Chrétien, terme auquel d'ailleurs il préférait celui de néo-socratisme. Sa pensée se situe aussi loin de l'existentialisme allemand de Heidegger que de l'existentialisme athée de Jean-Paul Sartre. Exigeante et lucide, elle ne s'établit pas dans la sphère de la philosophie abstraite et désincarnée, mais au contraire tire les leçons de la vie même : c'est la vie elle-même qui suscite les problèmes et qui procure les solutions.
