Kaiser vom 7.

FOREWORD When The Wall Street Journal asked newly elected President Bill Clinton in 1993 to name the one book (other than the Bible) that had been most important to him, he chose the Meditations of the Roman Emperor, soldier and stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. And with good reason. Marcus Aurelius (121–180 A.D.) left behind a record of accomplishment anyone who has ever held or aspired to power – political or otherwise – would envy. He was the last of the line of Roman rulers known to history as the “Five Good Emperors,” Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Their combined reigns, from 96 to 180 A.D., formed “the period in the history of the world during which the condition of the human race was the happiest and most prosperous,” according to historian Edward Gibbon in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

MARCUS AURELIUS: HIS MEDITATIONS [Extracts from translation by Jeremy Collier 1701 Revised by Alice Zimmern 1887] A man is as a limb as it were of an intelligent, righteous and irresistible being, that is all wisdom, and assigns matter and form, time, force, and fortune, to everything in one measure and proportion. A mind that is sound and healthy is prepared to digest all sorts of accidents A little ball is a beautiful thing to a child A wise man, therefore , must neither run giddily nor impatiently and contemptuously into his grave. He must look on death as nature's business and wait her leisure. A spider when it has caught a fly thinks it has done some great deed A star never wears a veil A man has work enough to make himself tolerable to himself. ... we have nothing but darkness and dirt to grasp at A soul unembarrassed with passion is a very citadel. A religious prince but without superstition Act like a Roman Emperor that loves his country. Alas! all this ceremony must end at last in stench and dust. Alexander, Julius Caesar and Pompey, what were they in comparison of Diogenes, Heraclitus and Socrates? These philosophers looked through things and their causes, and their ruling principles were in accordance. But as for those great princes, what a load of cares they were pestered with, to how many things there were slaves!

El Emperador Reencarnado Miami, FL, cardiologist George Vergara believes he is the reincarnation of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He tells his story in a compelling memoir that, though written in English, has now been published in Spanish ( Prosperar , Bogota, Columbia).

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus had been adopted by Hadrian. When Antoninus Pius became emperor, Marcus was betrothed to Faustina the younger, Antoninus' daughter. On the death of Antoninus Pius, Marcus insisted that he should rule jointly with Lucius Verus. Widespread threats of invasion meant that the last ten years of his reign were spent protecting the frontiers, and he was forced to auction off imperial property to raise a fighting fund. His surviving diaries have made him one of the best-known Roman emperors, revealing a religious, intelligent and highly-educated man Aureus of Marcus Aurelius, AD159-60

Marcus Aurelius reflected
In the Meditations his thoughts he collected
He was quite the Stoic
And semi-heroic
And the meaning of life he dissected
He seems an admirable man
Though I'm not really a fan His well-meant advice Doesn't strike me as nice And I avoid it whenever I can For the good life he always did strive While I'd rather into excess dive Look where it got him Buried and rotting While I'm exuberantly alive He writes: "Thy doom hangs over thee" As though that were life's key Doom be damned It should be banned And carefree we should be Each daybreak he rose like a jerk Saying: "I am rising for a man's work" While I every night Rise firmly upright For a far more enjoyable perk Virtue was high on his list A lesson I hope that I missed Such admirable restraint Would leave me quite faint At least while there are girls to be kissed He set out to save all mankind It's an ambition I don't really mind One admires his mores But I prefer whores And that's where salvation I'll find His philosophy is almost austere Basically saying: death do not fear And that when life was shattered Nothing else mattered Well, I'd still rather steer clear
