Plato Plato is one of the world's best known and most widely read and studied philosophers. Known as the student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle, he wrote in the middle of the fourth century B.C.E. His earliest works are regarded as the most reliable of the ancient sources on Socrates. His later works, including his most famous work, the Republic, blend ethics, political philosophy, moral psychology, epistemology, and metaphysics into an interconnected and systematic philosophy. It is most of all from Plato that we get the theory of Forms, according to which the world we know through the senses is only an imitation of the pure, eternal, and unchanging world of the Forms. Plato's works also contain the origins of the familiar complaint that the arts work by inflaming the passions, the ideal of "Platonic love," and the myth of Atlantis.

Plato (428 BC-347 BC)
Brief Biography
Plato (born in Athens about 427 BC, died about 347 BC) was an immensely influential classical Greek philosopher, student of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle . His most famous work is The Republic in which he outlines the ideal state. He is also well known for Laws and his many dialogues featuring Socrates . He founded the Academy, one of the earliest known organized schools in Western civilization, named after the spot it was founded on, holy to the hero Academus. He also began the discussion of Atlantis by mentioning it in his Timaeus and Critias
Plato was an aristocrat decended from a moderately well-off family. His ancestor, Glaucon (not to be confused with his older brother Glaucon and a character in The Republic ), was one of the best-known members of the Athenian aristocracy. Unlike his teacher Socrates , Plato wrote down his philosophical views and left a considerable number of manuscripts (see below).
Plato was deeply influenced by the Pythagoreans , whose notions of numerical harmony have clear echos in Plato's notion of the Forms (sometimes thus capitalized); see below.

Plato, Phaedrus
Translated by B. Jowett
PERSONS OF THE DIALOGUE: Socrates, Phaedrus.
Scene: Under a plane-tree, by the banks of the Ilissus.
Socrates . My dear Phaedrus, whence come you, and whither are you going? Phaedrus . I come from Lysias the son of Cephalus, and I am going to take a walk outside the wall, for I have been sitting with him the whole morning; and our common friend Acumenus tells me that it is much more refreshing to walk in the open air than to be shut up in a cloister. Soc. There he is right. Lysias then, I suppose, was in the town? Phaedr. Yes, he was staying with Epicrates, here at the house of Morychus; that house which is near the temple of Olympian Zeus. Soc. And how did he entertain you? Can I be wrong in supposing that Lysias gave you a feast of discourse? Phaedr. You shall hear, if you can spare time to accompany me. Soc. And should I not deem the conversation of you and Lysias "a thing of higher import," as I may say in the words of Pindar, "than any business"? Phaedr. Will you go on?

Plato: The Allegory of the Cave, from The Republic
Judging by this passage, why do you think many people in the democracy of Athens might have been antagonistic to Plato's ideas? What does the sun symbolize in the allegory? Is a resident of the cave (a prisoner, as it were) likely to want to make the ascent to the outer world? Why or why not? What does the sun symbolize in the allegory? And now, I said, let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened:Behold! human beings living in an underground den, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the den; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets. I see.

Clayton Cramer wrote, by way of introducing himself over at the Volokh Conspiracy . . . As I look back on my youth, growing up in Santa Monica, California, I can identify three defining moments in creating my political ideology. The first was a woman who worked at Baskin-Robbins, an ice cream store, on Wilshire Boulevard. She had a tattoo on her arm. . . . It was just a number. . . . The second defining moment was a teacher that I had . . . [who had worked] with the Dutch Resistance during World War II. . . . The third defining moment was living in Santa Monica in the late 1970s, when Tom Hayden and my fourth cousin, Jane Fonda, were running a little political machine that used rent control as their method of taking control. The power madness I saw there, both at City Council meetings, and when I ran for City Council in 1981, persuaded me that the totalitarian instinct is not limited to history books and foreign lands. These three events in my life play a big part in why I am a gun rights activist. Never again.
