Out of print for nearly a hundred years, Porphyry's Letter to Marcella is a personal and moving document. In addition to explaining why he chose Marcella as his partner in marriage, Porphyry consoles his wife and reminds Marcella not to neglect the life of philosophy, conceived of here as the care of the soul in its re-ascent to the One. The term porphyry copper now includes engineering as well as geological considerations; It refers to large, relatively low grade, epigenetic, intrusion-related deposits that can be mined using mass mining techniques. Geologically, the deposits occur close to or in granitic intrusive rocks that are porphyritic in texture. There are usually several episodes of intrusive activity, so expect swarms of dykes and intrusive breccias. The country rocks can be any kind of rock, and often there are wide zones of closely fractured and altered rock surrounding the intrusions. As is described following, this country rock alteration is distinctive and changes as you approach mineralization. In order to build models of porphyry systems, investigators have relied on observations from numerous localities that are thought to represent different paleolevels. This approach does not account for variability between deposits and for important features located several kilometers below and to the side of ore zones. Missing are direct observation and analysis of: potential source regions for fluids and their dissolved components; deep pathways for inward-convecting and thermally prograding non-magmatic fluids whose presence is predicted by numerical models of mass and heat transport; the effects of prograding fluids on cycling of metals and other components; and time-space relations of intrusions and hydrothermal evolution on a system-scale. A Porphyry Copper Deposit derives its name from a porphyritic stock located at the center of the mineral deposit. (This correlates to the red body in the center of the diagram above). A stock is a cylindrical igneous mass working its way up through the earth's crust. The word porphyritic describes the bimodal nature of the minerals within the stock. Some of these minerals are very large (up to 10 cm in length) and the rest are microscopic in nature. The surface expression of these types of systems (if they reach the surface) are usually strato-volcanos. However, because most of these system formed during the Laramide mountain building event some 40-80 million years ago, any surfacial expression has been eroded away. The surrounding country rock, which has been intruded by the stock, is often metamorphosed. Metamorphic rocks are those which have undergone some typeof heating or increased pressure. This heat and pressure causes preexisting rocks to be altered into a new type of rock.(This is depicted by the material surrounding the red porphyritic stock in the diagram above). An enriched mineral blanket will usually form near the surface of these deposits. This blanket forms because of percolation of rain water through the rocks. PORPHYRY Agathon Like all those who follow the spiritual path, Porphyry found himself at the edge of the abyss of meaninglessness, where the world appears as an intolerable burden and the realm of spirit remains empty. One evening Porphyry was on the verge of suicide when suddenly, Plotinus, divining his wretched condition, came to him and instructed him to go to Sicily for a rest. Away from the intense orbit of Plotinus, Porphyry regained resolve and perspective, and Plotinus continued instructions by sending nine additional treatises to him. The physical separation was accompanied by a spiritual reunion with the mind and heart of the teacher, though Porphyry sorely regretted being absent when Plotinus died. Having been charged by Plotinus with editing the treatises for dissemination and use, Porphyry returned to Rome, assumed direction of the school and organized his master's thoughts into the magnificent Enneads. He became a teacher in his own right, giving focus to the neo-Platonic movement in his Sententiae
