So may night continue to fall upon the orchestra, and may I, who am still searching for something in this world, may I be left with open or closed eyes, in broad daylight, to my silent contemplation. Andre Breton, Surrealism and Painting Suzanne Vincent Striped Pants As in the best Magic Realism, Goldberg's artists depict ordinary scenes without any strange or monstrous distortions; the magic arises from the fantastic joining of elements and events that do not normally exist together. For example, Bertil Warnolf's Totem Pole , 1987, is a surreal still life painting in which a die, two sparrows, an alarm clock, matches, marbles, an apple core, clothespin, plastic cowboy, two staplers, a rock, and a water pistol balance totem-like atop an egg. Randall Diehl's eerie contemplative garden with pink plastic flamingos and Barry Rockwell's (tightly rendered) portrait of an Elizabethan aristocrat holding a package of Ruffles potato chips demonstrate a marvelous and quirky brand of neo-surrealism in the Goldberg collection. Their imagery differs from the often horrific stock imagery of historical Surrealism in post-modern juxtapositions of the urban landscape and popular consumer goods. Bertil Warnolf Totem Pole An extremely systematic and practical businessman, he also has the romantic nature of an artist and dreamer.

Was Charlemagne Really The True King Arthur?
Author: Xenia Stanford xenias@cadvision.com
Many accomplishments credited to King Arthur of England were either borrowed from the pre-existing habits of the tribes of Gaul or did not happen until centuries after his lifetime. Although a real King Arthur is believed to have lived in the British Isles and died in 537 AD, not many documents or histories were written at the time and none that proved he had knights, a round table or even an unfaithful wife named Guinevere.
On the other hand there were many chroniclers writing during Charlemagne's reign from 742-814 AD whose works have survived to prove this king's deeds. In fact Charlemagne himself wrote letters and kept records that show such Arthurian traditions as chivalry, knighthood, courtly love and religious quests, such as for the Holy Grail, arose during Charlemagne's reign and thus were anachronistic to the real King Arthur's days.
THE ORDER OF THE ROUND TABLE
First upon examining the practices that Arthur could have known about and used, we find the famous Round Table. Seating equals at round or circular tables was a practice found among the Celtic tribes that inhabited Gaul prior to the Roman conquest around 58 BC. The Romans described these practices as common among the "barbarians". The Gallic tribal chiefs gathered their main or fiercest warriors around a circular table during celebratory feasts or war strategy meetings.

Curriculum vitae for Per Hasle Per Hasle (PH) was born in Fredericia, Denmark, on 29th October 1956. He went to the University of Aarhus in 1975 to study German Philology, where he specialised within the field of mathematical linguistics. In 1981 PH graduated as cand. phil. (approx. M. Phil). in German Philology. His masters dissertation on presuppositions in Montague Grammar was awarded first class honours. In 1984 that degree was supplemented by the degree of exam. scient. (approx. B.Sc.) in computer science. From mid-1983 to mid-1986, PH was employed at the University of Aarhus as a junior lecturer. From November 1986 till July 1988 he was employed as a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, where he did research on the logical and computational semantics of plurals and mass terms in English. Based on this research the University of Aarhus awarded PH his Ph.D. within Computer Science in June 1989. From September 1988 till March 1992, PH was employed as a Research Associate at the Department for Communication at the University of Aalborg. In April 1992, Per Hasle was employed as Associate Professor at the Department for Information and Media Science at the University of Aarhus. From August 1995 till January 1998 PH was deputy head of this department. PH has had a significant number of papers accepted in leading international journals and comparable anthologies. These papers have been mainly devoted to issues in information science from linguistic, computational and semiotical perspectives. A substantial monograph on temporal logic, written together with Professor Øhrstrøm from the University of Aalborg, was published in 1995 in the series 'Studies in Linguistics and Philosophy' (Kluwer Academic Publishers). This work deals with the role of time and temporality within the analysis and representation of information. In this approach, computational, logical, and linguistic perspectives are systematically integrated.

ARTHUR, BEATRICE U.S. Actor Bea Arthur stands five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches tall in her stocking feet, and has a voice that one reviewer characterized as "deep as a pothole." Her formidable stature and booming vocal register made her an unlikely leading lady in an industry driven by a narrow regime of feminine beauty. But as character traits for Maude Finley, they proved to be the perfect foil for the sexist bravado of Archie Bunker in Norman Lear's 1970s sitcom, All In the Family , in which Arthur first appeared in the role. The spin-off series, Maude was created for her virtually overnight. As opinionated and caustic in her own way as Archie, Maude Finley was instead, a crusader for women's liberation, the woman in charge. And in the nascent gender consciousness of the 1970s, the Women's Movement's fictional spokeswoman had to be big and booming. Television viewers' love affair with the character Arthur created in Maude has resulted in a struggle with the actors' nemesistypecasting. She was a recognized actress on Broadway before making the move to television, appearing in Woody Allen's The Floating Lightbulb

Narrative History of the County of Somerset
by Brenda Ralph Lewis
S O M E R S E T Saxon Times Their difficulties increased as the population grew and extreme measures were taken to obtain new land for cultivation. Marshes and wetlands were drained to make meadow and pasture, hill land and salt grasslands were reclaimed, and woodland was cleared. By 1240 an extra 400 hectares had been freed but more was needed and earth and stone banks were constructed to reclaim the salt marshes around the River Parrett estuary. Reclamation could involve regular contests with the sea, which flooded in at times of unusually high tides,as happened in 1259. This seeming disaster had its "up" side, however, producing particularly fertile land once the floodwaters had receded. This, in its turn, produced plenty of taxes for the royal revenues which in the mid-14th century made the Stretcholt tithing in Pawlett, much of it consisting of reclaimed land, one of the most highly taxed in Somerset. Agriculture in late medieval Somerset operated on both the mixed farming system and by open-field farming on land held in common with others. To ensure there was no trespassing, an "umpire" wearing white gloves and carrying a white stick was noted in 1340 supervising the mowing and the making of hayricks at Shepton Beachamp. Where there were no fields suitable plots of land, like closes, were used for planting oats and rye. The produce of manor orchards included fruit, especially pears and apples, some of which was turned into cider, vegetables such as leeks and onions and trees for timber.
