However, Rorty soon experienced doubts about the ultimate value of philosophy and published his well-known work, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (1979), in which he attacked the traditional idea of philosophy as a form of higher knowledge. His later works, including Contingency, Irony and Solidarity (1988) and Objectivity, Relativism and Truth (1991), have attracted a wide readership. Notes on Richard Rorty and Habermas (C.E.)
Commonalities between Rorty and Habermas: liberal politics, solidarity, and "communicative community"
While rejecting the metaphysical and ethical foundations of the Enlightenment, Rorty seeks to preserve its classically liberal intention of expanding the circle of personhood to include all persons, over against more traditional hierarchies which exclude specified "Others" (e.g., women, people of color, etc.). In his terms, he urges "that we try to extend our sense of 'we' to people whom we have previously thought of as 'they.'" (192) On his account, the Enlightenment built this extension on the philosophical assumption of a core self, an essential humanity in all human beings. In particular, this extension of humanity for Kant (whom Rorty takes up as the exemplary liberal Enlightenment philosopher) rests upon the assumption of a shared reason as such a central core. On Rorty's account, however, such reason and its moral obligations are divorced from feelings, e.g., of pity and benevolence. Over against this view, Rorty argues for a sense of human

Wisdom's Children
Richard Rorty, Thomas Nagel, and the Platonic Myth
by Bill Ramey I. G. E. Moore and Thomas Nagel J. M. Keynes had this to say about G. E. Moore's intuitive acceptance of philosophical realism: Moore had a nightmare once in which he could not distinguish propositions from tables. But even when he was awake, he could not distinguish love and beauty and truth from the furniture. They took on the same definition of outline, the same stable, solid, objective qualities and common sense reality. (Qtd. in White: 94) Commenting on the various attempts by realists to bridge the gap between belief and knowledge, Thomas Nagel writes: "A fourth reaction is to turn one's back on the abyss and announce that one is now on the other side. This was done by G. E. Moore" (69n). Given that Nagel's response to this reaction is confined to this one statement, found in a footnote, Nagel does not seem to share Moore's philosophical optimism in crossing the abyss. Nevertheless, Nagel at least thinks that we should try to cross the abyss, even if we never get to the other side: [T]he thing we can do which comes closest to getting outside of ourselves is to form a detached idea of the world that includes us, and includes our possession of that conception as part of what it enables us to understand about ourselves. http://www.dadamo.com/rorty.htm
Knowledge Base RICHARD RORTY Richard Rorty (1931-) is an American philosopher who was trained in the analytic tradition. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he has been influenced as much by Sartre and Heidegger as by Wittgenstein. Rorty has been able to articulate the post-modern concerns of 'continental philosophy' in the language game of Anglo-American academia. Rorty argues that ever since Descartes' "invention of the mind" philosophy has attempted to provide rock solid foundations for our understanding of the World. Kant thought that we interpret the world through universal timeless categories. The distinction was made between a mirroring non-natural mind and a mirrored natural world. The purpose of philosophy was to expose the shape of this mirror.
For Rorty human understanding is not based some objective structure of 'mind'. Rather we interpret the world through a variety of paradigms. If there is no objective philosophical standpoint then the idea that philosophy should be seen as the "queen of sciences", clarifying what counts as knowledge, is unsustainable. For Rorty the aim of philosophers should be, "to help their readers, or society as a whole, break free from outworn vocabularies and attitudes, rather than to provide 'grounding' for the intuitions and customs of the present." Richard Rorty and Internet
Richard Rorty is not an unknown philosopher in Poland. His books were recently translated into Polish and published; the first was Philosophy as a Mirror of Nature , the second came Contingency, Irony and Solidarity , and then Consequences of Pragmatism . Where does the interest in him come from? Is also Polish philosophy subjected to americanization? After all, it is American, Harold Bloom, who insists that Rorty is the most interesting philospher in the world today. However, the reasons of his popularity can be found easily in his texts. First, they present a unique ability of linking unusual erudition with the art of writing. Second, they expose quite attractive philosophical views, which we could call the apology of democracy without going into excess, the apology from antimetaphisical positions. Such beliefs, rare in Europe, where antimetaphisicians are usually politically radical, and not reformist, are the reasons of reading and commenting on Rorty. It is worth mentioning there are books on Rorty available in Polish bookshops and libraries. One of them is

DESCRIPTION This seminar will be devoted to a careful examination of the view of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Richard Rorty, and Martha Nussbaum concerning the purposes of philosophy and the importance of literature, especially the novel, for the achievement of these purposes.
We will begin by looking at Wittgenstein’s early masterpiece, Tractatus Logico-philosophicus. We will examine early Wittgenstein’s account of the ethical purpose of philosophy in light of the notions of nonsense, elucidation, as well as the distinction between saying and showing. These issues will be developed in view of another early text of Wittgenstein, “Lecture on Ethics.” The rest of the first part of the course will devoted to Wittgenstein favorite novel, Tolstoy’s Hadji Murad, and the significance of this novel in realizing the Tractarian conception of philosophy’s purpose.
In the second part of the course, we will study Rorty’s views on the purpose of philosophy and the importance of literature. We will begin with the third part of Rorty’s well-known Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature. We will examine and assess Rorty’s attack on the traditional conception of philosophy’s task as foundational, and his proposal for an alternative conception of philosophy as hermenutical. We will then move on to a close reading of selected essays in Rorty’s Contingency, Solitarity, and Irony with the aim of exploring the pedagogical value of the novel in relation to Rorty’s innovative conception of the task of the philosopher. We will also read and explore Rorty’s discussion of George Orwell’s 1984.

79. Richard Rorty And Brian Eno
richard rorty and Brian Eno by Gregory Taylor. In fact, I don't think Eno's antiessentialismwould be as articulate without richard rorty's writings.
http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/brian_eno/rorty.html
Richard Rorty and Brian Eno
by Gregory Taylor
Richard Rorty's career bears some superficial resemblances to Eno's, in that he begins his career in a position in which he's essentially located somewhere in the "mainstream" (as Eno's first exposure occurs in the context of British "pop" music with Roxy Music), at some point heads off in what seems to be a radically different sort of territory (which leaves some of his philosophical colleagues longing out loud for his "early stuff"), and in the process finds himself drawn into quite another set of alignments. And - this is more of a stretch - *both* Rorty and Eno are in some respects interested in looking at the work of "non-practitioners" - the notion that one occasionally finds novel solutions to a given dilemma by consulting people who are "nonmusicians" or "nonphilosophers." When asked about his work, many philosophers (those in the Anglo-American tradition, anyway) will generally say something supportive about his earlier work as one of the major American analytic philosophers. They're referring to his work in the philosophy of mind, language, and truth, and will usually mention his 1979 book "Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature." But of late, his interest for folks like Eno and people interested in cultural studies and literary theory begins when he pretty much completely repudiated his earlier analytic work for a kind of pragmatism which is a lot more in sync with the philosophical positions of continental European philosophers and theorists such as Heidegger, Derrida, Lyotard, Habermas, and Foucault.
