Chapter 6
Jean-Paul Sartre
Outsider Looking In
It will always remain a matter for astonishment how the Kantian philosophy knew that relation of thought to sensuous existence, where it halted, for a merely relative relation of bare appearance, and fully acknowledged and asserted a higher unity of the two in the Idea in general, and, particularly, in the idea of an intuitive understanding; but yet stopped dead at this relative relation and at the assertion that the Notion is and remains utterly separated from reality; so that it affirmed as true what it pronounced to be finite knowledge, and declared to be superfluous and improper figments of thought that which it recognised as truth, and of which it established the definite notion. Hegel It is of course easy to imagine a powerful, physically superior person, who first captures animals and then captures men in order to make them catch animals for him; in brief, one who uses man as a naturally occurring condition for his reproduction like any other living natural thing; his own labour being exhausted in the act of domination. But such a view is stupid, though it may be correct from the point of view of a given tribal or communal entity; for it takes the isolated man as its starting point. But man in only individualised through the process of history. Marx
his long essay Existentialism and Marxism Critique really belonged at the end, as its conclusion. As a philosopher Sartre was acutely aware that methodology is the most concentrated expression of theory, a result of a complex interaction of the spirit of the times, class base, theoretical analysis, practical activity, including a struggle with rival theories, rival

The Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre
(Volume XVI, 1981)
The Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre at Amazon.com The format of this Library of Living Philosophers volume differs from that of its fifteen predecessors. Because of Sartre's failing eyesight, it was not possible for him either to read the critical essays or to respond in the usual way to his critics. Nor did he feel able to prepare an autobiography. Thus, in order to collect the material needed for the volume, it was necessary to conduct personal taped interviews with Sartre and then to have those interviews translated, edited, and arranged in an order that would approximate as closely as possible the customary format of the volumes in the Library of Living Philosophers series. Skillfully and conscientiously conducted, the interviews themselves resulted in a unique and valuable document. At the time they occurred, Sartre was in good health except for his near-blindness, and he answered questions in a lively and easy manner. Although he seemed most comfortable when talking autobiographically, he nevertheless responded to many of the philosophical questions raised by the contributors to this volume.

The Jean-Paul Sartre Cookbook
by Marty Smith.
From The Free Agent , March 1987 (a Portland, Oregon alternative newspaper). We have recently been lucky enough to discover several previously lost diaries of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre stuck in between the cushions of our office sofa. These diaries reveal a young Sartre obsessed not with the void, but with food. Aparently Sartre, before discovering philosophy, had hoped to write "a cookbook that will put to rest all notions of flavor forever.'' The diaries are excerpted here for your perusal. October 3 Spoke with Camus today about my cookbook. Though he has never actually eaten, he gave me much encouragement. I rushed home immediately to begin work. How excited I am! I have begun my formula for a Denver omelet.
October 4
Still working on the omelet. There have been stumbling blocks. I keep creating omelets one after another, like soldiers marching into the sea, but each one seems empty, hollow, like stone. I want to create an omelet that expresses the meaninglessness of existence, and instead they taste like cheese. I look at them on the plate, but they do not look back. Tried eating them with the lights off. It did not help. Malraux suggested paprika.
October 6
I have realized that the traditional omelet form (eggs and cheese) is bourgeois. Today I tried making one out of a cigarette, some coffee, and four tiny stones. I fed it to Malraux, who puked. I am encouraged, but my journey is still long.

JEAN-PAUL SARTRE

Jean-Paul Sartre Nausea , in 1938, and a year later, a volume of short stories entitled The Wall . His literary career, however, was put on hold in 1939 when the French Army was mobilized. He was taken prisoner in June of 1940 and imprisoned in Staleg XIID near Trier. After nine months in the German prison camp, Sartre managed to escape and made his way to Paris where he joined the French Underground. Somehow, in spite of the German occupation, Sartre managed not only to write another book, but to get two plays produced in the occupied capital. In 1943, Charles Dullin produced Sartre's first play, Les Mouches or The Flies The Flies , Sartre uses the classic Oresteian myth as a vehicle for his existential philosophy. The play revolves around the return of Orestes to his homeland, Argos, several years after the murder of his father at the hands of his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegistheus. Rejecting the sense of guilt which the murderers have forced upon the people of Argos and established as the state religion, Orestes avenges his fathers death and liberates his homeland. Sartre's political message was clear: do not hesitate to kill not only Germans but also French collaborators if this is the only means of liberating France. No Exit which tells the story of a demoniacal lesbian, a spoiled society woman, and a cowardly journalist who find themselves trapped in Hell. They are held captive in a single chamber in which they must eternally torment one another with the awareness of their delusions and their failures as human beings. In the end, they come to the realization that "There's no need for red-hot pokers. Hell isother people!"
