On Suicide
Arthur Schopenhauer As far as I know, none but the votaries of monotheistic, that is to say, Jewish religions, look upon suicide as a crime. This is all the more striking, inasmuch as neither in the Old or in the New Testament is there to be found any prohibition or positive disapproval of it; so that religious teachers are forced to base their condemnation of suicide on philosophical grounds of their own invention. These are so very bad that writers of this kind endeavor to make up for the weakness of their arguments by the strong terms in which they express their abhorrence of the practice; in other words, they declaim against it. They tell us that suicide is the greatest piece of cowardice; that only a madman could be guilty of it, and other insipidities of the same kind; or else they make the nonsensical remark that suicide is wrong , when it is quite obvious that there is nothing in the world to which every man has a more unassailable title than to his own life and person.

42. The Proceedings Of The Friesian School
An electronic journal of philosophy, promoting the principles and the further development of the Critical Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, arthur schopenhauer, and the Friesian School, i.e. Jakob Fries, Leonard Nelson, Rudolf Otto, Karl Popper, F.A. Hayek, etc. HTML translation by the Editor

The Proceedings of the Friesian School,
Fourth Series
Taking up again the tradition of the Friesian School , this is a non-peer-reviewed electronic journal and archive of philosophy, inaugurated on line July 6, 1996, four years before the end of the 20th Century , just as the brilliant, courageous, prolific, and little appreciated German philosopher Leonard Nelson (1882-1927) started his Abhandlungen der Fries'schen Schule, Neue Folge , attempting a "Reformation of Philosophy," four years after the beginning of the 20th Century. The essays at this site, addressing many philosophical, historical, scientific, religious, economic, legal, and political issues, range from the fully annotated and technical to more informal and discursive discussions, often originally written for undergraduate classes. Many items therefore should be intelligible to those not familiar with all the arcana of academic philosophy, or with academic philosophy at all. This is done deliberately, since the trend, by which philosophy has obscured and esotericized itself and mostly dropped out of popular and literate culture, should be resisted. Work of a similar range, with the appropriate philosophical orientation and grounding, is acceptable and desired. Submissions will be considered that relate to the persons, issues, and history illustrated in the following statements, biographical sketches, and

Schopenhauer, Arthur
Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was born in Danzig, the son of a merchant who left him wealthy enough to survive the collapse of a brief academic career at the University of Berlin, during which he failed to draw students away from his intellectual opponent G. W. F. Hegel . His aesthetic theory can be found in the aphoristic Parerga and Paralipomena (1851) and more systematically in the third book of The World as Will and Representation (1818, rev. ed., 1844). Ignored until the latter was reissued, Schopenhauer's pessimistic metaphysics influenced such writers as Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad, while his aesthetics had a significant impact on the Symbolists and encapsulated some of the problems within Romanticism, in which he had read widely. What is equally important, his turning of metaphysics toward psychology anticipated Sigmund Freud and Freud's awareness of the unconscious motivations underlying conscious representations. Later in the century Schopenhauer's reputation eclipsed that of Hegel, but in the twentieth century his contribution has again been largely neglected.
Schopenhauer's aesthetics reflect certain tensions in the reluctant post-Kantian nihilism of his metaphysics.

Schopenhauer, Arthur (1788 - 1860) Schutz, Alfred (1899 - 1959) science, feminist philosophy of About The Oxford Companion to Philosophy from Oxford University Press Schopenhauer, Arthur German philosopher of inherited independent means, who gained distinction only towards the end of his life as a result, partly, of the notice taken of him in the British utilitarian journal the Westminster Review His mother, who thoroughly disliked her son for his gloomy outlook, ran a literary salon in Weimar, frequented by Goethe, and this led to a short period of intellectual friendship during Schopenhauer's youth, as Goethe initially thought Schopenhauer's philosophy relevant for his own theory of colours. Schopenhauer arrived at his general philosophical position very early and all his works are developments of the same basic initial ideas. His chief inspirations were Plato, Kant, and the Upanishads . He is, in fact, the first (and remains among the few) Western philosophers to have related his thought to Hindu and Buddhist ideas. However, his most distinctive contribution to philosophy is in his insistence that Will is more basic than thought in both man and nature.

His parents belonged to the mercantile aristocracy—the bankers and traders of Danzig. His father, Heinrich Floris Schopenhauer, the youngest of a family to which the mother had brought the germs of mental malady, was a man of strong will and originality, and so proud of the independence of his native town that when Danzig in 1793 surrendered to the Prussians he and his whole establishment withdrew to Hamburg~ At the age of forty he married Johanna Henrietta Trosiener, then only twenty, but the marriage owing to difference of temperament was unhappy. Their two children, Arthur and Adele (born 1796), bore the penalty of their parents’ incompatibilities. They were burdened by an abnormal urgency of desire and capacity for suffering, which no doubt took different phases in the man and the woman, but linked them together in a common susceptibility to ideal pain.i
