The Meaning of Love
Vladimir Solovyov

"The meaning and worth of love as a feeling is that it really forces us, with all our being, to acknowledge for another the same absolute significance that, because of the power of egoism, we are conscious of only in our own selves. Love is important, not only as one of our feelings but as the transfer of all our interest in life from ourselves to another, as the shifting of the very center of our lives....
"The meaning of human love, speaking generally, is the justification and salvation of individuality through the sacrifice of egoism. On this general basis we can also ... explain the meaning of sexual love" (Vladimir Solovyov)
What is the meaning of love's intense emotion? Solovyov points to the spark of divinity that we see in another human being and shows how this "living ideal of Divine love, antecedent to our love, contains in itself the secret of the idealization of our love."
According to Solovyov, love between men and women has a key role to play in the mystical transfiguration of the world. Love, which allows one person to find unconditional completion in another, becomes an evolutionary strategy for overcoming cosmic disintegration.

THE ROSE OF THE WORLD
DANIEL ANDREEV Lindisfarne Books is pleased to present this first English translation of a contemporary masterpiece of Russian spiritual philosophy. DANIEL ANDREEV, the son of a well-known pre-revolutionary writer, was born in 1906 in Berlin. He was raised by an aunt, the wife of a Moscow physician. Coming of age in the new russia of Marxist-Leninist atheist materialism, Daniel Andreev recognized the incompatibility of his gifts and propensities with the values that ruled society. Andreev was gifted with an "organic," innate religiosity a visionary capacity for exploring alternate realities. He also passionately loved history as the living current through which all lives flow. The author earned his living as a typeface designer while secretly writing poetry and prose by night works that could not be published at that time in Russia. During those years, he spent much of his spare time in nature; he communicated with nature spirits, the elements, and the Earth's being itself. Andreev was conscripted in 1942, but, due to a weak physical constitution, he was assigned to the army as a noncombatant. He entered Leningrad by way of Lake Ladoga burying the dead in mass graves as he recited funeral prayers over them.

NICHOLAS THE SECOND, REMAINS
After consultations with the Russian Orthodox Patriarch Aleksy the Second later this month, President Boris Yeltsin will decide what to do with the bones of the last Russian Czar Nicholas the Second and his family. Earlier, an authoritative panel of experts recommended to have the remains interred in the Russian monarchs' ancestral vault in St.Petersburg on July 17th, exactly 80 years after the Bolsheviks executed the Romanovs in the summer of 1917. It looks like the remains of the last Russian Emperor's family will eventually find peace. A senior investigator at Russia's Prosecutor Generals's office, Vladimir Solovyov, has in the past few years, worked hard to investigate the murder of the royal family. He was recently invited to appear in our regular Vis-a-Vis the World program hosted by the VoR chairman Armen Oganesyan. A few days before the program was aired, we invited our listeners in 33 languages and via the Internet, to ask their questions to Vladimir Solovyov. Following are excerpts from that program. Mir crew can't find puncture holes
  • Return to the special report main page MOSCOW Mir's commander and an American astronaut scoured a damaged module for punctures Saturday during a painstaking, six-hour spacewalk, but failed to find the holes from the worst space collision ever. Russian space officials acknowledged their disappointment. But the Spektr module has long since been sealed off from the rest of the Mir, and the holes do not pose any danger to the crew. The crew plans to make additional spacewalks to try to pinpoint the damage. "To our great regret, we have found nothing which could be interpreted as a puncture," Vladimir Solovyov, chief of Mission Control, told journalists shortly after the crew returned to the Mir. Mir commander Anatoly Solovyov, assisted by U.S. astronaut Michael Foale, combed over five separate sites on the Spektr module suspected of having ruptures caused by a June 25 collision with a cargo ship. But after more than five hours in open space, the two were told to return to the Mir. They re-entered the Kvant 2 module and closed the hatch shortly after 11 a.m. (3 a.m. EDT), six hours after they started. There was one bright spot Saturday: The astronauts manually realigned two solar panels on the Spektr module, which should boost their power supply further.

    September 6, 1997
Web posted at: 8:18 p.m. EDT (0018 GMT) MOSCOW (CNN) Disappointment was written across faces of Russian and American mission control specialists Saturday after a six-hour spacewalk failed to locate the source of an oxygen leak in a module of the Mir space station. The walk was the first attempt to repair the damaged hull of the space station since it was rammed by a remote-control supply ship June 25, forcing the crew to seal off part of the ship and raising questions about the space station's future. "To our great regret, we have found nothing which could be interpreted as a puncture," said Russia's Mission Control chief, Vladimir Solovyov.

QuickTime movie Russian cosmonaut Anatoly Solovyov and American astronaut Michael Foale found only bent and broken brackets that had fastened radiator panels to the exterior hull, but no damage to the hull itself. They did succeed in redirecting a solar panel toward the sun by hand, which will allow the Mir to increase its power supply by about 10 percent.

Bely, Andrei . Pseudonym of Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev , born on 26 October 1880 in Moscow. The duality which suffused much of Bely's work perhaps began in his childhood. His father, Nikolai Vasilevich Bugaev, a well-know mathematician at Moscow University, was autocratic and firmly committed to the natural sciences, while Bely's mother insistedsometimes irrationallyon a dedication to the arts. The conflicts between his parents had an unfortunate effect on the psyche of their young son.
At age 15, Bely became acquainted with the family of Mikhail Solovyov, the younger brother of the famous philosopher Vladimir Solovyov . In the Solovyov home, Bely was exposed to a wide range of cultured guests and discussions of art. Bely himself described meetings at the Solovyov home "sessions of the Florence Academy".
In 1899, Bely graduated from the well-regarded private gymnasium of L.I Polivanov. He entered Moscow University and graduated in 1903 with a degree in natural sciences. In 1904 he enrolled in the university's historical-philological faculty, but soon gave up his studies and by 1906 he had decided to give himself fully to writing.
His writing career began in 1902 with the publication of his "Second Symphony, the Dramatic", under the pseudonym of Andrei Bely, which was suggested by Mikhail Solovyov. Bely was to publish three more "symphonies", "The Northern, or FirstHeroic" (1904), "The ReturnThird" (1905) and "Goblet of BlilzzardsFourth" (1908). These "symphonies" were an attempt at a

    Vladimir Sergeevich Soloviev
Vladimir Sergeevich Soloviev was a poet, philosopher, and the son of famous Russian historian Sergey Mikhailovich Soloviev. Vladimir Soloviev's work had a very strong influence on the formation of Mladosymbolist philosophy, and helped define the poetic style of A. Beliy and A. Blok's first books. The wise goddess Sofia was at the foundation of Soloviev's philosophy. In the poem "Three Meetings," which came to be quoted so often by Symbolist poets, Soloviev asserts the divine unity of the universe. He also developed a study of universal theocracy and explores the possibility of a society built on spiritual principles. The real-world development of Russia soon caused Soloviev to contemplate new ideas, such as the end of world history, the last period of world history, and the final struggle between Christ and the Antichrist. ("Three Conversations"). According to Soloviev, the highest aim of art is to form in reality the order inherent in the embodiment of "absolute beauty, or the creation of the universal spiritual body". Soloviev's verse contains nothing psychologicaly concrete, and is full with hazy, fleeting impressions.
