Spencer, Herbert (1820-1903)
English philosopher who coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" and robustly defended the notion of evolution, both in terrestrial biology and the universe at large. He maintained that some unknown (and unknowable) force generated order from chaos and drove the development of higher forms from lower ones. His beliefs overlapped with those of Friedrich Engels and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and are most dissimilar to those held today by supporters of complexity theory.

Spencer, Herbert 1820-1903, English philosopher, b. Derby. He projected a vast 10-volume work, Synthetic Philosophy, in which all phenomena are interpreted according to the principle of evolutionary progress. Together with Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley he was responsible for the acceptance of the theory of evolution. In First Principles The Principles of Biology (2 vol., 1864-67) and The Principles of Psychology (1855; rev. ed., 2 vol., 1870-72) Spencer gave a mechanistic explanation of how life has progressed by the continual adaptation of inner relations to outer ones. In The Principles of Sociology (3 vol., 1876-96) he analyzed the process by which the individual becomes differentiated from the group and gains increasing freedom. In The Principles of Ethics (2 vol., 1879-93) he developed a utilitarian system in which morality and survival are linked. Spencer's synthetic system had more popular appeal than scientific influence, but it served to bring the doctrines of evolution within the grasp of the general reading public and to establish sociology as a discipline. His Autobiography was published in 1904.

SPENCER, Herbert. The Principles of Psychology. Second edition.-stereotyped. London: Williams and Norgate, 1870 [-1872]. 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xii, 635; viii, 648. Tear without loss in upper margin of title neatly repaired. Contemporary green half morocco, bookplates. Second edition, greatly enlarged from the first. In the intervening years theories of evolution had been proposed and generally accepted, and this edition was "harmonized" with those theories. "The Principles of Psychology (1855) was an important and original work, a real milestone in the history of the subject, marking its transition from a heavily epistemological phase to one in which it was closely dependent on physiology. In it Spencer paved the way for Wundt, William James, and Pavlov..." (DSB). This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Nigel Phillips ; click here for further details.

    Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) Assignment # 2
  • Explain the relationships among growth, structure and differentiation. What impact does growth and differentiation have on government? Compare and contrast "militant" and "industrial" societies. What are the reasons behind Spencer's "noninterventionist" position? What are Spencer's views on social evolution?
  • Link: Herbert Spencer Spencer and "Social Darwinism" Some short takes: In contrast to Comte, Spencer's evolutionary scheme begins with material conditions rather than ideas. . . Like Comte, Spencer is greatly underestimated by many contemporary sociologists. . . .I particularly like Spencer's insights on the growth of administration as a consequence of the increasing division of labor, and the centralization of authority when the system is threatened. . . . His evolutionary theory (which was not merely derived from Darwin) is very subtle, it is not unilinear as many critics claim. . . .Spencer advocated functional analysis as well as an evolutionary focus. . . .You do not have to subscribe to his political position of "non-interventionism" to appreciate his social analysis. In his own words: On materialism: "What is Comte's professed aim? To give a coherent account of the progress of human conceptions. What is my aim? To give a coherent account of the progress of the external world. Comte proposes to describe the necessary and the actual, filiation of ideas. I propose to describe the necessary, and the actual, filiation of things. Comte professes to interpret the genesis of our knowledge of nature. My aim is to interpret . . . the genesis of the phenomena which constitute nature. The one is subjective. The other is objective" (1904, p.570).
