from page 569 was written by Bill Wilson or some other Big Book Author
and only the quote in parenthesis at the bottom was written by the
Philosopher Herbert Spencer. Help Needed: We (myself and other aa history nuts)
are seeking to find the exact place in Herbert Spencer's writing and philosophy
where he made this statement!! Please send email if you have any answers One Answer has come that this quote is from his "Principles of Biology" but proof has not arrived yet Jan 20 2003
Herbert Spencer quote, page 570 of Big Book Bob S., tells me that he spent some time in the archives during the convention looking at copies of the various editions of the Big Book. He came up with this interesting bit of information. The Big Book quote by Herbert Spencer which is now on page 570 was at first included in a story by Ray C. (Campbell?) entitled: "An Artist's Concept."

Young 'The Development of Herbert Spencer's Concept of Evolution' This short conference paper takes a theme from my doctoral research and complements the argument of the dissertation with respect to the fundamental role of Herbert Spencer's ideas in psychology, neuroscience and related disciplines, which was even greater than his under-rated role in the history of evolutionary thinking in general. It was delivered to the Eleventh International Congress of the History of Science, Warsaw, August 1965 and published in Actes du Xle Congres International d'Histoire des Sciences Warsaw: Ossolineum, 1967, vol. 2, pp. 273-78. The Writings of Professor Robert M. Young
Herbert Spener and Inevitable Progress Spencer is so grandiose that it is hard to summarize his ideas, yet he was one of the most influential thinkers in nineteenth-century Britain, and his ideas were an inspiration around the world. His version of evolution was utterly generalised in all the ways Darwin tried to be circumspect. The organic analogies which Spencer developed are the foundation-stones for the widespread idea of functionalism across the biomedical and human sciences, extending to architecture, systems theory, cybernetics and information theory. I have written in detail about his ideas in many books and essays. An invitation from the editor of History Today led to this attempt briefly to circumscribe Spencer's work and impact. The essay was reprinted in a collection from the journal: G. Marsden, ed.

It was the English philosopher Herbert Spencer, not Charles Darwin, who coined the phrase "survival of the fittest." Although Spencer's development of a theory of evolution preceded publication of Darwin's 'Origin of Species', Spencer is today regarded as one of the leading social Darwinists of the 19th century. The theory, based on Darwin's conclusions, suggests that people and societies are subject to the same laws of natural selection as plants and animals are in nature. Spencer is remembered today as author of 'Social Statics' (1851), in which he argued that it is the business of government to uphold and defend natural rights. Beyond this, government should not interfere with the economic functioning of society at all. He saw his main task as developing a philosophy that would link the principles of many areas of knowledge into a grand scientific synthesis to replace the theological systems of the Middle Ages. His work 'The Synthetic Philosophy' was published in several volumes from 1862 to 1896. Spencer was born in Derby, England, on April 27, 1820, where his father was a schoolmaster. He declined an offer to attend Cambridge University. Most of his higher education came through reading. He taught school for a few months, and from 1837 to 1841 he was a railway engineer. In 1842 he contributed a series of letters to a magazine

Acton, Lord
Acton was against "programmes of reaction" and thought that there could be great reliance on those institutions that came about as the result of slow evolution. That, ultimately, what was to be trusted were those "changes arising from special historical situations rather than from the minds of presumptuous men."

Bastiat, Frédéric
Bastiat was of the view that those who subscribe to socialism subscribe to putting in place mechanisms, a philanthropic tyranny, which would but force the human race (a futile effort) to behave as the social engineers think the human race ought to behave as opposed to how it behaves by nature.
Bentham, Jeremy
In Bentham's writings, politicians, beginning with those of the early 19th century, found legitimization in their most favoured activity: the business of making laws; and, they have been doing it in great quantities ever since. Bentham the business Bentham figured that laws should be socially useful and not merely reflect the status quo; he thought it to be a "sacred truth" that "the greatest happiness of the greatest number is the foundation of morals and legislation."
