Edith Stein.
Edith Stein was born on October 12, 1891 in Breslau (Germany), now Wroclaw, Poland. She died on August 9, 1942 in Auschwitz, Poland.
Born into an Orthodox Jewish family, Edith Stein renounced her faith in 1904 and became an atheist. As a student at the University of Gottingen, she became acquainted with Edmund Husserl and became interested in his philosophy. When Husserl moved tot the University of Freiburg, he asked Edith Stein to join him there as his assistant. She received her doctorate in leading philosophers.
At Gottingen she first came into contact with Roman Catholicism. Attracted to this faith, Edith Stein returned on a holiday in 1921 to Breslau, where her profound encounter with the autobiography of the mystic St. Theresa of Avila caused her swift conversion. She was baptized on January 1, 1922, and gave up her assistantship with Husserl to teach at a Dominican girls' school in Speyer (1922 - 1932). While at Speyer she translated St Thomas Aquinas' De veritate (On Truth) and familiarized herself with Roman Catholic philosophy in general. In 1932 she became a lecturer at the Institute for Pedagogy at Munster but, because of anti-semitic legislation passed by the Nazi government, was forced to resign the post in 1933.
In 1934 she entered the Carmelite convent at Cologne, taking the religious name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. There she completed her metaphysical work 'Endliches und ewiges Sein', an attempt to synthesize the diverse philosophies of Aquinas and Husserl.

of the Cross
Edith Stein
Canonized by Pope John Paul II
October 11, 1998
* Edith Stein, born a Jewess, tested early in her life by atheism,
quenched her thirst for truth in the Catholic faith. * As a Catholic, she was ready to accept any sacrifice to save
'her people', thus reconciling the Church and the Synagogue. * As a philosopher, her reason blossomed out in theology which
under her pen, evangelizes a contemporary culture and inculturates
the Gospel. * As a woman she is proud of her vocation and dignity of being
a woman. * As a Carmelite she reveals herself a master of spiritual life. * As a martyr of the Holocoust, she exorcises, through the Cross, this 'dragon of evil'.

Biografisk artikel av Margareta Björndahl.Category World Svenska Romersk-katolska kyrkan Helgon......Edith Stein. 1891 1938.

BEATE BECKMANN FENOMENOLOGIA DELL'ESPERIENZA RELIGIOSA
SECONDO ADOLF REINACH ED EDITH STEIN Adolf Reinach ed Edith Stein Fenomenologia della coscienza religiosa Apertura per l'esperienza religiosa L'esperienza dell'esser custoditi da Dio ... Conclusione 1. Introduzione

Saint Edith Stein
Excerpted from an address delivered by the (then) President of Holy Cross, the Rev. John E. Brooks, S.J. on the occasion of the formal dedication of Edith Stein Hall, 6 May 1988. Edith Stein was a remarkable Jewish woman. Born in Breslau, Germany on 12 October 1891, the youngest of eleven children of a very devout Jewish family, she died in the Auschwitz gas chamber on 9 August 1942, having been sent to the death camp when she refused to deny her Jewish heritage. In the intervening 50 years, she was a remarkably successful woman in a male dominated world. became a convert to Catholicism and a devout Carmelite nun who, as anti-Semitism spread and intensified in Germany and Holland, wished to offer her life for world peace and the preservation of her Jewish people. She was a brilliant student, first enrolling at the University of Breslau in 1911, and later transferring to the University of Gottingen to pursue her studies under the mentorship of the famed founder of phenomenology, Edmund Husserl. Husserl eventually chose Edith Stein to be his teaching assistant at the University of Freiburg, and declared her to be the best doctoral student he ever had even more able than Heidegger who was also a pupil of Husserl's at the same time
Edith was. In 1916 she completed her doctoral dissertation and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree
