Chapter from a book by Andrew Carlson about German anarchism. Treats stirner as a precursor of this movement.

From the archives of The Memory Hole
Philosophical Egoism: German Antecedents
The following comprises Chapter II of Andrew Carlson's, Anarchism In Germany: The Early Movement
Max Stirner (1806-1856)
by Andrew Carlson Max Stirner, nom de plume for Johann Caspar Schmidt, came into this world at six o'clock on the morning of October 25, 1806. He was born in a house at number 31, Maximiliansstrasse (Marketplatz) which was the principal street of the city of Bayreuth. He was less than half a year old when his father, a maker of wind instruments, died of tuberculosis on April 19, 1807, at the age of 37. His mother, two years later, married Heinrich Ballerstedt, a 57-year-old pharmacist from Helmstedt, and they all moved to Kulm on the Vistula. Johann returned to his native town of Bayreuth in 1818 for his education, living with his godfather, and uncle, Johann Caspar Martin Sticht after whom he was named. He remained there for the next eight years, completing his studies in the gymnasium where he distinguished himself by always placing in the upper percentile of his class.
In 1826 he left Bayreuth to study at the University of Berlin where he remained for the next two years. In Berlin he met a fellow student, Ludwig Feuerbach, who was destined to be one of his future rivals. At the University of Berlin Stirner studied logic under Heinrich Ritter, geography under Carl Ritter, "Pindar und Metrik" under Bockh, and the philosophy of religion under Hegel.

Revised for W3 1996 ©L. A. Schiereck N.B.: This paper is based upon literature available in 1981, and while extensively revised, it has not been updated for content. Comments, suggestions or other info are welcomed by the author, address to: lsezig@dnai.com
DEDICATION
In remembrance of my father, Fred W. Schiereck
and Professors Walter Koppelman and Michael Carella of SDSU
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The author thanks Josef Binter, Bea Rose, Paul Wheatcroft, Larry Watson and Hoke Simpson for their "schenkenden Tugend"; also Linda Moore for her encouragement, and along the way Richard Vancil, Bill Stoddard, and Rosita Davis. Barbara Franke-Watson of SDSU helped resolve some difficulties in German texts. Soon I plan to add a translation of Goethe's poem "Vanitas, Vanitatum Vanitas!" that inspired Stirner. A special thanks to Professor Antonio T. De Nicolás for his unsparing insights and impeccable scholarship in "preserving sensuality", during 1979-80 class and lunch sessions at S.U.N.Y., StonyBrook.

Parafilosofie

Preface
It was years later that I did not only begin to understand Chajjam as a poet, but also as a poet-philosopher. Naturally I also began broadening my knowledge of eastern and oriental philosophies as well as western philosophies. This enabled me to look through the traditional, i.e. strictly rational mode of thinking. Stirner had criticized this mode of thinking, which has no likes Stirner was right when declaring this nation to be one tyrannizing her children.

It sounds very mystical and promising, but the sounds of his words suggested a golden cage, which was hard to escape from. Heidegger himself: something existi ng as an object turned into something existing as a thought, stayed there and did not proceed any further. And Heidegger himself, some being whose structure of existence being a limited One only amounts to Being-In-The-World . The basic structures of his concrete Ego as One in an objective world of things permit him to sneer at the animal inside himself in order to cope with it, in order to defeat it. The abstract object changed into a concrete subject by means of perpetual thought processes. It became a subject, which only vegetated as a prisoner of a particular logic in the dusk of occidental gods. The victory of the speaking animal, that
