The Lessons of October
by Leon Trotsky The Lessons of October was written in 1924 as a preface to a volume of Trotsky's writings from 1917. It was published in English in the Communist International's news magazine Imprecorr in February of 1925. This translation was made by John. G. Wright and first published by Pioneer Publishers in 1937. Transcribed for the World Wide Web by David Walters in 1996 Table of contents: Chapter 1 We Must Study the October Revolution Chapter 2 The Democratic Dictatorship of the Proletariat and Peasantry - - in February and October Chapter 3 The Struggle Against War and Defensism Chapter 4 The April Conference Chapter 5 The July Days; the Kornilov Episode; the Democatic Conference and the Pre-Parliament Chapter 6 On the Eve of the October Revolution; the Aftermath Chapter 7 The October Insurrection and Soviet 'Legality' Chapter 8 Again, on the Soviets and the Party in a Proletarian Revolution A Comment by the Author
Chapter 1
We Must Study the October Revolution
W Such an approach though it may be subconscious is, however, profoundly erroneous, and is, moreover, narrow and nationalistic. We ourselves may never have to repeat the experience of the October Revolution, but this does not at all imply that we have nothing to learn from that experience. We are a part of the International, and the workers in all other countries are still faced with the solution of the problem of their own "October." Last year we had ample proof that the most advanced Communist parties of the West had not only failed to assimilate our October experience but were virtually ignorant of the actual facts.

"Tom Mix Meets Leon Trotsky: Newsreels and Outtakes as Documentary"
by Dan Streible
As the building blocks of historical documentaries, newsreels (from the 1910s through the 1950s) constitute a primary element of contemporary nonfiction film and video. We of course do not attribute normative status to the millions of feet of topical footage stored in archives around the world; they are not merely purveyors of documentation. Rather, we question, first, the ways in which newsreels have represented history and historical events, and second, how the material available in newsfilm archives needs to be scrutinized when it is re-appropriated in contemporary documentary and television news programming. Consider what this odd little film documents, then contextualize it and consider its possible "use value" for the latter-day filmmaker. As newsreel subjects go, this is nothing unusual: Hollywood self-promotion, the film industry making itself news. The "Tsar of All Rushes", Will Hays, improvises one of his Babbitt-like speeches, touting Hollywood's benign conquering of the world via the universal language of motion pictures. A parade of major and minor Fox players obviously pulled in unexpectedly from their dressing rooms display their discomfort with the new microphone technology. Only director Frank Borzage seems at ease before the Movietone set up, but he has little to say short of polite promotion.

Leon Trotzky
By John Hetts
Leon Trotsky was a key figure within the Russian Marxist and Revolutionary circles, and later in his life he became one the central leaders of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) until his banishment from the Politburo in 1926. Trotsky, the progeny of Russified Jews, was born in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine, under his original name, Lev Davidovich Bronstein. In school, Trotsky was recognized for his superior intellect. After escaping from Siberia in 1907, Trotsky fled to New York City where he expressed his revolutionary theories and the absurdities of Russia’s government through a Russian Newspaper. Trotsky returned to Russia in 1917 to aid the February Revolution and take leadership of the left Social Democrats. After gaining great popularity from the left, he joined the Petrograd Soviets. Lenin and Trotsky began to express similar needs for the destruction of the Provisional Government. After being flattered and persuaded by Lenin, Trotsky joined the Central Committee of the Bolshevik party as its Chairman. During Lenin’s exile Trotsky, now the in charge of the Bolsheviks, set out to complete Lenin’s vision by directing the October Revolutions. Upon Lenin’s return a new Soviet government was erected, in which Trotsky became the Commissar of Foreign Affairs. Trotsky negotiated a peace treaty with Germany under the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918 in order to insight a German revolution but because of difficulties only ended warfare between Russia and Germany. In order to sustain revolutionary activities he created and direct the Red Army, which allowed the soviets to win the Civil War, and create a massive Red Scare in Russia.

7:LEON TROTSKY AND BEYOND
DURING THE TERRIBLE decades of the 1920s and 1940s when Stalin was committing barbarous crimes in the name of 'socialism', the lone voice of Leon Trotsky kept alive some of the basic elements of socialism from below. Stalin had returned to an ideology resembling authoritarian pre-Marxian socialism. Gone was socialism's democratic essence. Stalin's 'Marxism' was a variant of socialism from above. A bureaucratic elite was to oversee the transformation of a poor and backward country into a modern power, whatever the cost in human terms. That such a perspective could be called 'socialist' or 'communist' was a horrendous infamy. It was Trotsky's great virtue to insist against all odds that socialism was rooted in the struggle for human freedom. Furthermore, against the nationalistic notion of 'socialism in on country', Trotsky asserted that socialism could only come into being on a world scale. In so doing, he defended the uncompromising internationalism of Marx, Luxemburg and Lenin. Throughout the 1920s and until his death at the hands of Stalinist agent in 1940, Trotsky fought desperately to build a revolutionary socialist movement based on the principles of Marx and Lenin. At a time when Stalin's counter-revolution was reshaping Russia and the fascism of Hitler and Mussolini was sweeping across Europe, crushing workers' movements in its path, this was no mean task. Even if he had never developed the theory of the permanent revolution, never played a leading role in the revolution of 1917, nor built the Red Army, Trotsky's contribution to keeping alive the socialist flame during the 1930s would have insured him a lasting place in the history of international socialism.
