Bas Van Fraassen

It must involve throughout a resolute rejection of the demand for an explanation of the regularities in the observable course of nature, by means of truths concerning a reality beyond what is actual and observable, as a demand which plays no role in the scientific enterprise.

Sola Experientia ? Feyerabend's Refutation of Classical Empiricism
Philosophy of Science 64 (Proceedings): S385-S395 (1997)
Bas C. van Fraassen Philosophy Department Princeton University Princeton, N.J. 08544 USA
Feyerabend's "Classical Empiricism" (1970) draws on a 17th century Jesuit argument against Protestant fundamentalism. The argument is very general, and applies to any simple foundationalist epistemology. Feyerabend uses it against Classical Empiricism roughly, the view that what is to be believed is exactly what experience establishes, and no more which he identifies as among other things Newton's "dogmatic ideology". I will first examine the argument, then ask whether it is perhaps too powerful, a sceptical argument which, if cogent, undermines any pretense to rational belief. Feyerabend explains why the argument could have had little force in the targeted Protestant community. But that is significant only if we can think of its epistemic stance as rational. Feyerabend's irony leaves us with doubts, and yet, perhaps, also with some hope of a genuinely promising development.

Bas C. van Fraassen Brief Bio
1999-2000 Terry Lectureship Bas C. van Fraassen is one of the world’s foremost contributors to philosophical logic and the philosophy of science. In the latter field he is known for strongly empiricist arguments against influential forms of scientific realism. In his Terry Lecture series he sought to view religion as well as science, and the philosophical enterprise, from an empiricist point of view, arguing that empiricists should see philosophy, not as metaphysical knowledge, but as an existential stance. The overall title for his lectures was The Empirical Stance. The titles of his four lectures were: Against Analytic Metaphysics; Empiricism as Will and Idea; Scientific Revolution/Conversion as a Philosophical Problem; and What is Science and What Is It To Be Secular? Professor van Fraassen joined Princeton University’s Department of Philosophy in 1982. His interests include philosophy of science (especially subjects related to probability theory and to the foundations of physics), philosophical logic, and empiricism. What is empiricism and what could it be? Bas C. van Fraassen, one of the world’s foremost contributors to philosophical logic and the philosophy of science, here undertakes a fresh consideration of these questions and offers a program for renewal of the empiricist tradition. The empiricist tradition is not and could not be defined by common doctrines, but embodies a certain stance in philosophy, van Fraassen says. This stance is displayed first of all in a searing, recurrent critique of metaphysics, and second in a focus on experience that requires a voluntarist view of belief and opinion. Van Fraassen focuses on the philosophical problems of scientific and conceptual revolutions and on the not unrelated ruptures between religious and secular ways of seeing or conceiving of ourselves. He explores what it is to be or not be secular and points the way toward a new relationship between secularism and science within philosophy. “This work argues powerfully for a radical redirection of much contemporary thinking in epistemology and other important topics. It should force all of us to rethink the nature of analytic philosophy.”
