A CRITIQUE OF VAN FRAASSEN'S VOLUNTARISTIC EPISTEMOLOGY Jonathan L. Kvanvig Abstract: Van Fraassen's epistemology is forged from two commitments, one to a type of Bayesianism and the other to what he terms voluntarism. Van Fraassen holds that if one is going to follow a rule in belief revision, it must be a Bayesian rule, but that one does not need to follow a rule in order to be rational. It is argued that van Fraassen's arguments for rejecting non-Bayesian rules is unsound, and that his voluntarism is subject to a fatal dilemma arising from the non-monotonic character of reasoning. Text: Van Fraassen outlines his epistemology [i] in response to the question whether there can be rational ampliative belief, rational belief the holding of which is not entailed by one's evidence. His positive answer to this question results from embracing two theses, a Bayesian one and a "voluntarist" one. They are: Bayesianism: If one follows an epistemic rule of obligation in changing one's degrees of belief, that rule must be a Bayesian rule, such as conditionalization. Voluntarism: Changes in one's degrees of belief can be rational even if one is following no epistemic rule of obligation in making those changes.

REMARKS ON VAN FRAASSEN My main purpose is to situate VF's chapter on causality and explanation within the wider framework of the work we have been examining. After that, I will note certain relations between causality and probability relations which VF discusses in passing, since they are of interest for later parts of the course. For starters, it's good to have VF's general viewpoint on the table: "To be an empiricist is to withhold belief in anything that goes beyond the actual, observable phenomena, and to recognize no objective modality in nature. To develop an empiricist account of science is to depict it as involving a search for truth only about the empirical world, about what is actual and observable. Since scientific activity is an enormously rich and complex cultural phenomenon, this account of science must be accompanied by auxiliary theories about scientific explanation, conceptual commitment, modal language, and much else. But it must involve throughout a resolute rejection of the demand for an explanation of the regularities in the observable course of nature, by means of truths concerning a reality beyond what is actual and observable, as a demand which plays no role in the scientific enterprise" ( The Scientific Image , pp. 202-203).
