Alfred North Whitehead
Alfred North Whitehead (b.1861 - d.1947), British mathematician, logician and philosopher best known for his work in mathematical logic and who, in collaboration with Bertrand Russell , authored the landmark three-volume Principia Mathematica Although there are significant continuities throughout his thought, Whitehead's intellectual life is often divided into three periods. The first corresponds roughly with his time at Cambridge, from 1884 to 1910, during which he worked primarily on logic and mathematics. The second corresponds roughly with his time at London, from 1910 to 1924, during which he concentrated mainly on issues in the philosophy of science. The third corresponds roughly with his time at Harvard, from 1924 onward, during which he worked on more general issues in philosophy, including the development of a comprehensive metaphysical system which has come to be known as process philosophy.

Favorite Quotations Alfred North Whitehead Aims of Education Ideas won't k e e p something must be d o n e about them." ~ Alfred North Whitehead Art flourishes where there is a sense of adventure, a sense of nothing having been done before, of complete freedom to experiment; but when caution comes in you get repetition, and repetition is the death of art. Philosophy asks the simple question: What is it all about? One main factor in the upward trend of animal life has been the power of wandering. Religion is what the individual does with his own solitariness. Everything of importance has been seen by someone who did not discover it. A clash of doctrines is not a disaster – it is an opportunity We think in generalities, but we live in detail. Seek simplicity but distrust it. Every really new idea looks crazy at first. Education with inert ideas is not only useless, it is above all things harmful. Periods of tranquility are seldom prolific of creative achievement. Mankind has to be stirred up. It requires a very unusual mind to make an analysis of the obvious. The art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order.

February 15 ~  Clash of Doctrines Adventures of Ideas A c l a s h of doctrines is n o t a disaster it is an opportunity ~ Alfred North Whitehead Mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) was born in Kent, England . The son of an Anglican clergyman, Whitehead had a special gift for mathematics as a child. He once said, "We think in generalities, but we live in detail." Whitehead attended Cambridge's Trinity College from 1880-1910. A scholar, fellow, and senior lecturer, this brilliant mathematician was a pioneer in the development of modern algebra. "Ideas won't keep," he observed. "Something must be done about them." Professor Whitehead collaborated with his student Bertrand Russell on the three-volume Principia Mathematica (1910-13), a thorough examination of deductive logic that revolutionized math and philosophy. All mathematics , he said, could be derived from a few logical concepts. "Every really new idea looks crazy at first," Whitehouse once explained. In the latter years of his life, he wrote Process and Reality (1929) and taught philosophy at Harvard University where he continued to explore scientific and metaphysical theory.

    Alfred NorthWhitehead
Pioneer of Process Philosophy Alfred NorthWhitehead, English mathematician and philosopher, was born in England in 1861, schooled at home until age 14, and graduated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1884. There he was a lecturer in mathematics until 1911. At the University of London he was a lecturer in applied mathematics and mechanics (1911–14) and professor of mathematics (1914–24). Ultimately, he moved to Harvard in 1924 where he was professor of philosophy and remained there for the rest of his life. He died in 1947 at the age of 86. Whitehead's distinction rests upon his contributions to mathematics and logic, the philosophy of science, and the study of metaphysics. In the field of mathematics Whitehead extended the range of algebraic procedures and, in collaboration with Bertrand Russell, wrote Principia Mathematica (3 vol., 1910–13), a landmark in the study of logic. His inquiries into the structure of science provided the background for his metaphysical writings. He criticized traditional categories of philosophy for their failure to convey the essential interrelation of matter, space, and time. Whitehead's life is often described as having three distinct phases roughly corresponding to his academic positions, and his influence can be felt in all three areasthat of a mathematician and logician (Trinity1884-1910), a philosopher of science (London 1910-1924) and a philosopher of metaphysics (Harvard from 1924 onward). During this latter period he developed a comprehensive metaphysical system which has come to be known as Process Philosophy. In contrast to traditional philosophies, he asserted the essential inter-relationship of matter, space, and time; that objects may be understood as a series of events and processes. This concept was elaborated further in his book

Alfred North Whitehead Biography Cornerstone Books Home Page Religion in the Making by Alfred North Whitehead Preface
This book consists of four lectures on religion delivered in King's Chapel, Boston, during February, 1926. The train of thought which was applied to science in my Lowell lectures of the previous year, since published under the title, Science and the Modern World , is here applied to religion. The two books are independent, but it is inevitable that to some extent they elucidate each other by showing the same way of thought in different applications. The aim of the lectures was to give a concise analysis of the various factors in human nature which go to form a religion, to exhibit the inevitable transformation of religion with the transformation of knowledge, and more especially to direct attention to the foundation of religion on our apprehension of those permanent elements by reason of which there is a stable order in the world, permanent elements apart from which there could be no changing world.

The Educational Theory of Alfred North Whitehead
    Analyst: Mike Profico edited 12/14/01
    RETURN
    1. Theory of Value:
What knowledge and skills are worthwhile learning? What are the goals of education? Whitehead was interested in actively 'utilizing the knowledge and skills that were taught to students to a particular end. He believed we should aim at "producing men who possess both culture and expert knowledge in some special direction. "(Aims-page 1) He thought, "education has to impart an intimate sense for the power and beauty of ideas coupled with structure for ideas together with a particular body of knowledge, which has peculiar reference to the life of being possessing it." (Aims-page 10)
    2. Theory of Knowledge:
What is knowledge? How is it different form a belief. What is a mistake? What is a lie? Knowledge for Whitehead is a social construct to the extent it "stimulates activity of thought and not what he calls inert ideas, that is to say ideas that are merely received into the mind without being utilized, or tested, or thrown into fresh combination"(Aims page I ). Although he does not speak of beliefs, mistakes or lies, in regard to the educational process I believe he would argue that we internalize our beliefs about education through the knowledge we acquire. He felt education had too much of these inert ideas which rendered the process useless. He wanted us to guard against teaching "too many subjects and not teaching thoroughly enough" (Aims-page 1). He wanted us to utilize knowledge for it was useless if we didn't. He writes, "utilizing knowledge and ideas is relating it to the stream~ compounded of sense, perceptions, feelings, hopes, desires and of mental activities adjusting thought to thought which forms our life" (Aims-page 1)
