Challenging Reality

The Founding Fathers Unlike other physical theories, quantum mechanics was not the the invention of one or two scientists. Those who took part in its discovery are collectively called the founding fathers. Planck, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Born, Jordan, Pauli, Fermi, Schrodinger, Dirac, de Broglie, Bose all made notable contributions. During the first part of the 20th century scientists were faced with a range of extraordinary physical phenomena showing the effects of quantum mechanics. They wondered whether the universe could really be as strange a place as their laboratory experiments appeared to show. Bit by bit they pieced together the results of experiments and found rules obeyed by matter. In 1936 Birkhoff and Von Neumann collected the rules together into the accepted axioms of quantum mechanics. Birkhoff and Von Neumann showed that the axioms of quantum mechanics provide a consistent framework in which it is once again possible to predict the results of experiment, at least statistically. But, although these laws are mathematically consistent, most scientists agree that they are counter intuitive, and do not have any satisfactory known physical interpretation.

Basilio Catania's Work on Physics, Information Theory
Cosmology and Bible vs. Modern Science Foreword
My interst in these areas of research came from my engagement in the telecommunication area, which latter has always been my primary area of investigation. My first insight into said subjects occurred between 1979 and 1981, when I gave a series of lectures titled "Man and Communication" or "Man and Compunication," this latter derived from the progressive integration of computers into telecommunication systems. It was suggested to me by the many forms of communications (visual, aural, tactile, etc.) and the increasing capability of machines to exploit the sensing, actuating and processing capabilities of human beings. From about 1985 onward, I extended my knowledge on the above subjects by studying the early forms of communications between human beings, the structure of language and numbers, of human sensors (brain, ear, eye etc.), human actuators (muscles, neurons, synapses, etc.) and human DNA. I also refreshed my knowledge of information theory, with particular regard to the nature of information. The pace towards the origins of mankind and, shortly after, to the origin of the universe (Cosmology) was short. In addition, I could not avoid comparing the scientific theories of Cosmology with the teachings of the Bible (Genesis). Thus, I gave a series of lectures at the

The Visual Quantum Mechanics project is developing instructional materials about quantum physics for high school and college students. Instructional units and/or courses are being created for high school and college non-science students, pre-medical and biology students, and science and engineering majors. Each set of the teaching-learning materials integrates interactive visualizations with inexpensive materials and written documents in an activity-based environment. The original Visual Quantum Mechanics project developed materials for high school students and for non-science college students. Teaching-learning materials for science and engineering students are now in development. Some tutorials for this audience are now available for testing. Instructional Units Tutorials Software Software ... On-line instruction Work in Progress Sampler Equipment Lists Interactive Engagements for use in an upper-level undergraduate quantum mechanics course are now in development. Some materials are available for testing. Using contemporary medical diagnosis tools as motivation the project is creating a course in modern physics for students interested in medicine and the biological sciences.

Quantum physics of matter shows how quantum mechanics is applied to describe matter on the macroscopic and microscopic levels. Chapter 1 explores the quantum physics of gases, developing the idea of a quantum gas that can describe a variety of macroscopic systems including the electrons in metals and the photons in the Sun. Chapter 2 describes solids and their electrical properties, leading to a discussion of solid-state devices including solarcells and laser diodes. The next two chapters focus on the subatomic world. Chapter 3 discusses radioactivity, models of the atomic nucleus, and nuclear reactions include fusion and fission. Chapter 4 is concerned with the physics of fundamental particles and their interactions. Quantum physics of matter is in a series of books which along with interactive multimedia, is used in the Open University course

Beauty. Elegance. Charm. Color. Symmetry. Strangeness. These are the very words that physicists use to portray the most basic, scientific picture of our world. What they see is breath-taking. If you think "Quantum Physics" sounds too difficult, unfortunately, it’s even worse than that. Nobody in his right mind, my friends warn me, would dare do television like this. So here I am, doing it because Quantum Physics is real and relevant, and because every literate person should appreciate its profound beauty. This show is an impassioned word portrait of a new reality. Tilt your head, and it won’t be so hard. Stick with me; my bet is that you’ll get it and like it. Participants: Benford, Buchanan, Koonin, Lederman, Linde Gregory Benford is both a recognized physicist and world-renowned science-fiction novelist. He is professor of physics at the University of California at Irvine, where he specializes in plasma physics and astrophysics. He is also a consultant to NASA. He has written over 30 science fiction books, including If the Stars are Gods and COSM, and is considered perhaps the most scientifically accurate science fiction writer.

But hold that thought. To what kind of information do we refer? Is it the abstract concept of "0" and "1" entities, like God himself, that never bow to the physical world but just are? Scientists are convening in Amsterdam this week to continue a quest begun two decades ago by Nobel laureate Richard Feynman, a quest to dispel this Platonic fantasy. The Fourth Workshop on Quantum Information Processing will be drawing scores of information researchers from around the globe.
