BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM The goal of the Biological Training Program is to prepare predoctoral students for research careers in basic and applied biological psychology. The research emphasis of the faculty within our progr am covers a broad range of areas including investigations of human and animal sensory information processing, neural mechanisms of motivation and reinforcement, psychological stress and health focusing on the cardiovascular and immune systems, and behavioral/psycho-pharmacology with special consideration of the behavioral biology of drug abuse. Many of the faculty within our program have also established collaborative ties with a diverse array of research programs within the Research Triangle area. These include the research laboratories of the Neurobiology Curriculum , the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the US Environmental Protection Agency , both located in the Research Triangle Park; and the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and Dental Research Center located here on campus.

Biological Psychology is part of an empirically and experimentally oriented psychology which is concerned with the biological bases of mental processes and behavior. Causal relations of biological processes on the one hand and mental processes and behavior on the other hand are dealt with in both directions. Our unit takes part in undergraduate teaching of Biological Psychology as well as methodology classes (lab courses), higher under graduate and graduate classes, mainly on cognition as well as training of non-psychology majors.

The Research Option Webmaster: Audra Knight The Biological Psychology Concentration provides an opportunity for a limited number of Biology and Psychology students to pursue a coherent curriculum that emphasizes the biological basis of behavior. Three approaches to understanding the mechanistic basis of behavior are represented in the program:
  • behavioral science - including perceptual, learning, and evolutionary studies organismal neuroscience - e.g., endocrine and neuroanatomical studies molecular neurosicence - including molecular neurobiology and neuropharmocology
Each year up to eight sophomore Biology and Psychology majors are accepted to the concentration.

Dictionary of Biological Psychology
Edited by Philip Winn , Professor in Psychology, University of St Andrews, UK
Biological explanations are now commonly used to account for all types of psychological events and experiences - even including the nature of consciousness itself. Interest in Biological Psychology, the study of interactive psychological and biological processes, has therefore increased dramatically.
This contemporary and unique new Dictionary explains terms in a clear and informative manner from the perspective of a variety of disciplines in the neurosciences, psychology, biology, ethology, psychiatry, clinical psychology and philosophy. It is invaluable in making the language and theories of these disciplines accessible to all those interested in the field, regardless of their approach.
Any student, researcher or practitioner, whose work touches on these areas, and indeed anyone wanting to understand contemporary psychology and neuroscience, will find this Dictionary truly essential.
