My intent in this position paper is to sketch some present realities in applied psychology (and specifically in Counseling and Clinical Psychology) in the United States, suggest some influences on these realities, and outline some of the currents we face in attempting to navigate what will no doubt be a stormy and interesting future. I hope that these perspectives might contribute to the lively and spontaneous interchange that will characterize our upcoming gathering. I of course also welcome comments or response (at mkunkel@westga.edu ) in the interim. My perspectives on this issue spring from my experience over the last 12 years in training doctoral psychologists in two rather traditional scientist-practitioner training programs. So what are the siren songs that threaten, as well as foretell, the future of applied psychology? And what are the masts to which we might bind ourselves and resist the seduction and the rocks? I, as you no doubt, can think of many, but time permits only three, with a corresponding and provisional "mast" for each. First

What courses to take

Getting into a graduate program in psychology can be rather complex and confusing. There are many different paths you can take and a variety of hurdles. BUT DON'T PANIC YET! Take it one step at a time. Read over this handout a few times. Write down any questions you may have and bring those questions to one of us, the faculty. We'd be happy to help. THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF GRADUATE STUDY There are several types of graduate programs in psychology, the most common ones being: experimental, developmental, social, biopsychology, cognitive, clinical, counseling, school, and organizational psychology (also known as industrial-organizational psychology, or simply "IO") . These last four (clinical, counseling, school, and IO) are considered by the American Psychological Association (APA) to be the four distinct areas of applied psychology.

University of North Carolina at Asheville Table of Contents CLINICAL/COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGIST (PH.D./PSY.D.) JOB DESCRIPTION Overview Clinical and counseling (C/C) psychologists assess and treat people with psychological problems. They diagnose psychological disorders on the basis of interviews and psychological testing, and they make recommendations about treatment, sometimes conferring with psychiatrists to determine if drug therapy is warranted. C/C psychologists conduct individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy; the specific techniques and theories they apply vary widely. Clinical and counseling psychology are technically distinct areas of psychology. Each has its own history, division within the American Psychological Association (APA), and graduate training programs. Clinical psychologists have traditionally attended more to the treatment of psychopathology, using the medical model as a guide. Counseling psychologists have traditionally focused more on helping people through normal developmental crises or problems of living. Another difference might be found in the area of assessment. Clinical psychology training programs emphasize assessment more strongly, with students learning to administer and interpret projective and objective tests of personality as well as intelligence tests. Counseling psychologists are more likely to learn about vocational and career testing and measures of normal personality.

What’s the difference between clinical and counseling psychology?Historical Differences Traditionally, clinical and counseling
http://www.bluffton.edu/courses/tlc/nathp/web/settings/clincoun.htm
What’s the difference between Clinical and Counseling Psychology?
Historical Differences: Traditionally, clinical and counseling psychology had somewhat different emphases. Clinical counseling focused on more severe psychopathology, whereas counseling psychology finds its roots in career counseling of veterans following WW II. Thus counseling psychology focused more on adjustment issues rather than serious mental health problems. Clinical programs typically provided better training in psychological assessment and in treatment of severely mentally ill populations, whereas counseling psychology programs provided training that was oriented more toward counseling individuals with less severe difficulties.
The differences between these two types of programs have grown smaller and smaller over the years. Now, there are few reliable differences in curriculum or career goals/interests of enrolled students. Different schools in both of these areas may differ in emphases, so it is important to review the curriculum of any particular school to see the extent to which it matches the type of emphasis that you are seeking. Clinical psychology programs typically have lower admission rates, and are harder to get into than some medical schools. Admission to counseling programs is competitive, but somewhat less so than is true for clinical programs.
Graduates of both clinical and counseling programs can be licensed to provide mental health services in mental health agencies, mental hospitals, private practices or any other settings where licensed psychologists work.

With all the different types of counselors out there, I thought a section describing who's who would help out future students. Counselors Psychologists References Counselors The term counselor is meant to describe someone who holds their master's degree in counseling. Counselors can be found in a variety of settings including college counseling centers, private counselors, rehabilitation counselors, and counselors in private practice. Training is typically broad and counselors can find themselves doing career counseling, family counseling, school counseling, mental health counseling, community counseling, marriage counseling and consulting. Master's programs are accredited by CACREP (e.g. community, career, family, etc) and the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) accredits rehabilitation counseling programs. Most programs will offer a core of coursework, internship and/or practica placements, and many offer the opportunity for specialty work. There are quite a few licensing levels: NCC - National Certified Counselor
ACS - Approved Clinical Supervisor
LPC - Licensed Professional Counselor (some states may use a different name)
You should check with the state you wish to practice in to inquire about licensure requirements. The
