About the Degree

The M. A. in Counseling Psychology is founded on the premise that the problems of the psyche can only be addressed if we adopt an integral point of view. We must address not only mind, but body, human relationships, our relationship to the environment, and our deep interconnection with that which has been called spirit. In order to accommodate the scope of the Integral perspective, the M.A. degree has 60 semester units which provides an unusually thorough training in psychological theory and methods, while at the same time providing additional coursework and training in specific ways to deepen and expand psychotherapeutic practice. The concentrations include Integral Counseling Psychology, Expressive Arts Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Somatic Psychology. Furthermore there is a balance of types of learning. Students experience psychotherapeutic methods by practicing being "therapists" with each other in dyads and small groups. They are required to complete a minimum of 45 hours of personal therapy in addition to their coursework. Finally, the degree includes a full year of practicum, working with clients while being supervised by a licensed professional. The practicum can be at one of the Institute's three counseling centers, or at one of the more than 60 clinical agencies and schools coordinated through the Institute's Field Placement Office.

Integral Counseling Psychology
M.A. in Counseling Psychology Program
Founded in 1973 on the recommendation of Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri, the Integral Counseling Psychology (ICP) program was the first transpersonally oriented, East-West psychology graduate program in the world. The program has evolved a vision of psychotherapy practice that draws upon the major spiritual traditions of the East and West, recent cultural and social sciences research, and the innovations made by contemporary psychoanalytic, humanistic, systemic, and transpersonal psychologies. The Integral Counseling Psychology program is unique in that it adheres to the guidelines of the major professional organizations in the field, while at the same time incorporating the integral philosophy of the late Haridas Chaudhuri. Integral means "essential to wholeness." According to this view, all aspects of a person's being are important and to be valued. Integral psychology holds that the individual can and should turn inward in the search for wisdom and effective energy, and then share this wisdom with the broader community to advance the evolutionary process. The curriculum integrates a spiritual perspective with actual psychotherapy practice. The transpersonal orientation provides an overarching framework for clinical work, supporting an increased emphasis on training in depth therapy.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • More than 4 out of 10 psychologists are self-employed, about 6 times the average for professional workers. A doctoral degree usually is required for employment as a licensed clinical or counseling psychologist. Opportunities for employment in psychology for those with only a bachelor's degree are extremely limited.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Research psychologists investigate the physical, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of human behavior. Psychologists in applied fields provide mental health care in hospitals, clinics, schools, or private settings. Like other social scientists, psychologists formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Research methods vary depending on the topic under study. Psychologists sometimes gather information through controlled laboratory experiments or by administering personality, performance, aptitude, and intelligence tests. Other methods include observation, interviews, questionnaires, clinical studies, and surveys.

MASTER'S (M.A./M.S.) DEGREE JOB DESCRIPTION Overview
Master's-level clinical and counseling psychology practitioners ("C/CPPs" for purposes of this manual; in some states, clinicians with this degree cannot legally call themselves "psychologists") conduct assessment and therapy with people having psychological problems. They work in community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, non-profit organizations, and private practices, usually under the direction of doctoral level C/C psychologists. Typical Job Duties See this section under the "Clinical/Counseling Psychologist (Ph.D./Psy.D.)" career profile. Job Outlook Faster than average job growth is expected, for all the same reasons that jobs for doctoral level C/C psychologists are predicted to grow. However, C/CPPs face strong competition for jobs from other master's-level helping professionals (e.g., social workers, counselors, creative arts therapists). The uncertain licensing status of C/CPPs may hurt in the job market where financially strapped mental health centers cannot afford the time or money for supervision. C/CPPs were not among the top 30 fastest-growing occupations as ranked by the BLS, and they were not included in the MSU study. Potential Earnings The average starting salary for new graduates with a master's degree in clinical or counseling psychology is estimated to be $25,000. Median salaries in 1992 were $37,000 in counseling psychology and $40,000 in clinical psychology.

The Clinical/Counseling program in Psychology is designed to prepare students interested in going into the helping professions and human services. Course work and related experiences should provide students with a foundation for graduate work, or, in some cases, entry level positions in counseling, school psychology, clinical psychology, child/adolescent assessment and intervention, occupational therapy, rehabilitation psychology, and other areas within the mental health field.
All students work closely with a clinical or counseling faculty member on a senior research project of interest to the student. By graduation, most students have worked on at least one additional project with a faculty member and played a role in presenting the findings at a regional psychology conference.
In its first year (1998-99), there were five psychology majors who graduated with clinical/counseling distinction. By the next academic year, 1999-00, that number had grown to eleven. We expect continued growth. In the short period of time the Clinical/Counseling psychology program has been in existence, it has helped students get accepted into a number of graduate programs including those in the following human service specializations: clinical psychology, counseling psychology, social work, developmental psychology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. In addition, several students have also gone on to both clinical research positions and careers in child care or teaching.
