Forensic Psychology Perhaps the most encompassing account of the current state of forensic psychology can be found in Eric W. Hickey's Serial Murderers and Their Victims ; second edition (see works cited page). Hickey states: The term forensics means belonging to or used in courts of law. This has given rise to forensic medicine or the use of medical expertise in legal or criminal investigations. In turn, forensic psychology has begun to offer insights into criminal behavior and the criminal mind. Criminology and psychology join forces to create criminal profiling, or the creation of criminal portraits that assist those in law, law enforcement, mental health, or academics to better understand crime and criminals. We might envision forensics as a hub of a wheel with the spokes representing the sciences. For example, geography is now becoming a tool to address issues of crime and victimization. This approach is referred to as spatial mapping or environmental criminology and is used to generate geographic profiles of offenders, victims, and crime scenes. Computers are now being used to identify crime locations in urban and suburban areas by plotting where they have occurred over time. This geo-mapping approach to crime prediction has tremendous implications for future urban development, police administration, and policy development. Spatial mapping can also be applied to understanding criminal victimization, victim profiling, and promotion of victim protection. David Canter of Liverpool, England established a program in Investigative Psychology in which computer models are used to predict criminal offending.

What is a Forensic Psychology Practice
What is a Forensic Psychology Practice?
The practice of forensic psychology creates a great deal of confusion for many people. The average individual is unsure about the role a forensic psychologist and how they can service the courts, attorneys, and their clients. When most individuals hear the word forensic, they automatically think of homicide reconstruction, blood analysis or other crime scene related topics. The word forensic is simply defined as relating to or dealing with the application of scientific knowledge to legal problems. There are forensic pathologists, criminologists, scientist, and so on.
What is it that a forensic psychology practice does? The role of a forensic psychologist is to educate the trier of fact on a legal matter. In many ways his is different than the goals of a clinical psychologist. A clinical psychologist deals primarily with patients that are seeking treatment for debilitating psychological symptoms. A forensic practice does not provide treatment, but examines clients based on referral objectives set forth by the legal system. The forensic assessment is different from a clinical assessment because factors such as malingering come into play. Clients seeking treatment have little reason to malinger symptoms if they are motivated in treatment. However, participants in criminal and civil courts often have legal and monetary reasons to malinger symptoms.
