http://www.ahpweb.org/rowan_bibliography/chapter14.html
TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY Transpersonal psychology started off within humanistic psychology, and then became more distinct, with its own separate journals and conferences. So here we have something which goes beyond the borders of humanistic psychology. Yet if we look at a map of the transpersonal, such as the one given to us by Ken Wilber (see Figure 1), we can see that it overlaps with the humanistic. So there is still a strong connection, such that for example Frances Vaughan, a star of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology, could be elected President of the Association for Humanistic Psychology. Transpersonal experiences involve an expansion or extension of consciousness beyond the usual ego boundaries and beyond the limitations of time and space. Maslow talked about peak experiences, and these form a good entrance point for understanding the transpersonal. It is very important, however, not to fall into the one-two-three-infinity theory of the transpersonal, where we say that one is the body, two is the emotions, three is the intellect, and everything beyond that is one great mish- mash called "the transpersonal". As the chart demonstrates, there is more than one realm within the transpersonal, and these distinctions are quite essential if we are not to misunderstand our own experience. Progression from one level to the next is not easy, because it is, as Wilber has emphasised, a dialectical process involving the negating of the previous phase. Many of us have had the experience of seeing the mental ego, with all its rules and roles, as quite ugly and wrong, when we first came into the stage of authenticity. And just in a similar way, we have to renounce the sense of a separate self with clear boundaries when we move on to the stage of the Subtle self or soul. This is a rich realm, full of symbols and myths, archetypes and visions, multiplicity and imagination. This is where we get in touch with the higher self, the deeper self, the transpersonal self, as Assagioli called it.

TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY
Nowadays, Transpersonal Psychology is a still young discipline. It was born from various psychological streams, critical towards Behaviourism and Psychoanalysis. From the beginning, it proposed itself as a "third force", and aimed at discovering new possibilities and potentialities of man. Its trend was "humanistic", in a way. Later on, the interest of researchers decidedly shifted to the Self: the Ego was put in second place, and space was allowed to non "personal" tendencies. In fact, man is not only a product of his story, of his milieu, and so on, but, above all, of the ring which links him to a long chain of progenitors. The man of caves continues to live inside us. But he is not only an aggressive or libidinous man, as Freud put him. He hides in himself a rich potential to enlightenment or awakening; hence, he must develop this "sparkle" of eternity through his actions. With such premises, a completely new field opens to research: there are particular experiences, whereby man can attain another state of mind, much more significant than that of his being awaken. These were already called "peak experiences" by an important exponent of humanistic psychology, that is, Abraham Maslow, and can give man a new perspective on reality and the world. In order to define the mood related to these experiences, all the greatest traditions have elaborated their specific terms: Zen speaks about satori ; Taoism about ("condition of emptiness"); Sufism about

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Sparta/5239/trans_psych.htm
TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY (C) 1999, Richard Griffiths Abstract
TRANSPERSONAL AND NON-TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY COMPARED
The subject matter of non-transpersonal psychology may be termed the psycho-physical self, which is here taken to mean the human individual as conceived by scientific materialism. Transpersonal psychology contextualizes the psycho-physical self by including the subject matter of non-transpersonal psychology in a larger whole. The contextualization which Transpersonal psychology offers has two dimensions. The first may be termed the self-integrating dimension, and the second, the self-transcending dimension.
THE SELF-INTEGRATING DIMENSION OF TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY
The self-integrating dimension of Transpersonal psychology maps the relationship between the psycho-physical self and the more senior aspects of the individuated self, which may be called the soul identity or the deeper personality.
Within the self-integrating dimension of Transpersonal psychology belong all those approaches which aim to identify, awaken and explore planes of consciousness and energy of the individuated consciousness which are more subtle than those which belong to the gross psycho-physical realm. An analogy which may be useful can be drawn from the light spectrum. At the red/orange/yellow end of the spectrum is the psycho-physical plane, and at the blue/indigo/violet end are the more subtle planes. The self-integrating dimension of Transpersonal psychology unifies the spectrum of individuated consciousness and energy from the red through to violet. Examples of consciousness and energy at the more subtle end of the spectrum are perceptions of the subtle energy anatomy of the body, premonitions, intuitive knowledge, visions, clairvoyance, energy healing, meditative experiences, shamanistic experiences, archetypal consciousness, etc.

Let Southwestern College end your graduate school search. Study transpersonalpsychology and counseling in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
http://www.swc.edu/about.html
From the President Marylou Butler, Ph.D.
President, Southwestern College
Welcome to the learning environment of Southwestern College. We are a community of faculty and students who have come together to study the nature of inner and outer transformation in a mindful way. We seek to use our understanding of transformation to respond effectively to the suffering that surrounds us while simultaneously celebrating the joys of living fully and well.
At the heart of the College's educational experience is an exploration of the spiritual dimension in learning. Students and faculty join together in the classroom to engage in the transformational process and apply that learning to the development of skills for working in the world as mental health professionals. We encourage our students to have aspirations that are as large as possible, to have clarity of intention when being of service and to cultivate wisdom and compassion.
As we proceed through the third decade in the life of Southwestern College, we are enjoying an exciting period of growth. With regional accreditation in place, we are attracting a national student body, developing the physical plant and offering expanded community services programs.
I invite you to participate fully in your educational experience with us so that you can continue to stretch beyond any limitations you may think you have and find your personal expression of transformational leadership.

HUMANISTIC AND transpersonal psychology. (Part One). Many Occult. Humanistic transpersonal psychology 2 of 2. Proclamation Home Page.
http://procinwarn.com/human1.htm
HUMANISTIC AND TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY (Part One) Many of the unbiblical trends throughout society are rooted in the development of Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology: The "Third" and "Fourth Forces". This includes trends in the evangelical church and the government school system. In the psychology establishment, the "First Force" was considered to be Psychoanalytical Psychology. The "Second Force" was Behavioral Psychology. THE THIRD FORCE Humanistic Psychology has played a major role in obsessing this generation with "Self". It was developed by such men as Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. Exemplified by Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs," the goal of Humanistic Psychology is "Self Actualization" and the liberation of individuals from the bonds of society and their individual psychological condition. (Humanistic Psychology should not be confused with "Humanism", although their anti-biblical results are similar.) Carl Rogers' theory of "Self Actualization" was centered on the importance of the "Self-concept". According to Rogers the goal in life must be to achieve the "Ideal Self". Maslow said that individuals develop according to a hierarchy of needs: First the physiological needs must be satisfied (nourishment, safety, and comfort), then the psychological needs (affection and esteem), and then the need for Self-Actualization. A Self-Actualized person, according to Maslow, will exhibit spontaneity, independence, social involvement, self-acceptance, sense of humor, and a lack of hostility. He will have had what Maslow called "peak experiences", including "mystical" experiences that he calls "transient moments of Self-Actualization".

Featured The Marriage of Sense and Soul by Ken Wilber
Narrator: Denis deBoisblanc
Downloadable Audiobook / 6 hours / 1998 Science and religion have always been considered mutually exclusive concepts, but are they really? Philosopher Ken Wilber shows how we might begin to think about science and religion in ways that allow for their reconciliation, on terms acceptable to both camps. Science is one of the most profound methods humans have devised for devining truth, and religion focuses on discerning meaning. Wilber shows that not only is science compatible with the world's religions, it is indeed necessary to unite the two. He presents an elegant and accessible program which is breathtaking in its scope - one that cannot fail to change the way you look at your world.
