Linear Transformations: An Introduction Consider a set of scores on variable X with mean(X) = 25 and var(X) = 10. Further, we will create a new variable Y = 2X + 100, which has the form Y = aX + b, which is a linear transformation. The mean of Y will equal 2*25 + 100 = 150 [mean(Y) = a*mean(X) + 100] The variance of Y will equal 4*10 = 40 [var(Y) = a *var(X)] Here is an example of a linear transformation that you should recognize: . It transforms X into Z, such that, mean(z) = and var(Z) = 1. Linear Transformations and Axis Rotations Consider a bivariate normal distribution with an individual with the vector or point P, [x , x ] = [8, 5] on axes X and X respectively Consider the transformation given below: The point P now has the value [y , y In effect we are defining a new set of variables which are a linear combination of the original variables y = ax + bx Not all linear combinations are equivalent to axis rotation, only those in which a + b = 1. This can be checked by (cos

SQL Functions
Since we have started dealing with numbers, the next natural question to ask is if it is possible to do math on those numbers such as summing them up or taking the average of them. The answer is yes! SQL has several arithematic functions, among them SUM and AVG . The syntax for this is, SELECT "function type"("column_name") FROM "table_name" For example, if we want to get the sum of all sales from our example table, Table Sales Date Los Angeles Jan-05-1999 San Diego Jan-07-1999 Los Angeles Jan-08-1999 Boston Jan-08-1999 we would type in SELECT SUM(Sales) FROM Store_Information Result: SUM(Sales) $2750 represents the sum of all Sales entries: $1500 + $250 + $300 + $700. AD*DSPC This command will do linear arithematic (add subtract and multiply spectrum with a constant) between two (or more) spectra and store the result in the first spectrum given.
http://www.nscl.msu.edu/~tsang/SMAUG_Manual1/ACommands.html
AD*DSPC This command will do linear arithematic (add, subtract and multiply spectrum with a constant) between two (or more) spectra and store the result in the first spectrum given. All of the spectra that are being manipulated must have the same dimensions and BPC value as the first spectrum given. Otherwise the program will reject the offending spectrum. ‘Spectrum to alter?’ asks for name of the first spectrum in the summing process. This is the spectrum that all of the results will be stored in. ‘Spectrum to add in?’ will asks for name(s) of the spectra to sum into the first spectrum. It will prompt you for each spectrum name individually. If a multiplicative constant is desired to multiply this spectra with, the input format will be : Spectrum name/constant- where constant is a REAL*4 number. If you wish to terminate the summing session, simply return without typing any characters, and the program will return to the main command loop. If you leave before you have successfully given it spectrum names, no spectra will be altered.
ADEF*INE This will tell SMAUG that you wish to move some (or all) of the spectra to the AED common block so that the AED display program can display them onto the AED terminal.

    Calling molly commands
It is worth reading this document in full if you have never used molly before.
    Prompted input:
The simplest way to start with molly is just to type a command name and let it prompt you for all the parameters. A '?' when responding to numerical parameters will type the allowable range for a parameter. The prompts are only one line long at most and so may be opaque on occasion. If so, look at the help on the command in question. Entering something outside the allowed range should get you out of the command (-1 for a slot is always a good one).
    Command line input:
    Shortening commands:
    Command line editing
molly supports command line recall and editing. This capability derives from the use of Thewalt's getline C routines. They allow you to recall old commands (any number) and edit them, with cursor keys and emacs-style commands. Thus:
  • ^A/^E = move to start/end of a line.
  • ESC-F/ESC-B = move forward/back one word.
  • ^K = delete to end of line.
  • ^R/^S = reverse/forward search for string in history list
  • ^O = toggle overwrite/insert mode.

Theorem 5 Given a set of variables X , X , ...,X p , with nonsingular covariance matrix S , we can always derive a set of uncorrelated variables Y , Y , ..., Y p by a set of linear transforamtions corresponding to the principal-axes rotation. The covariance matrix of this new set of variables is the diagonal matrix L = V' S V Theorem 6 Given a set of variables X , X , ...,X p , with nonsingular covariance matrix S x , a new set of variables Y , Y , ..., Y p is defined by the transformation Y' = X'V, where V is an orthogonal matrix. If the covariance matrix of the Y's is S y , then the following relation holds: In other words, the quadratic form is invariant under rigid rotation. Definition

15 July 1961 Dear Geneva, I am Gordon's aunt and I have often wondered what had become of you and the children. I read in the paper last Saturday about your late husband's death. If I hadn't read about that, I don't know if I ever would have heard of you. It is too bad that you have to be left a widow again. I am sure you had a hard time raising your first children, but maybe they can help you now. Do you work anywhere? goose quil Sincerely, Jennie Matlock Alexander NOTE: This is the daughter of James Pickel Matlock. Will was the eldest and Jennie the youngest of eight children. CHINESE ARITHEMATIC Candle light, it burns in every hole in your your eyes
it's beautiful, how much you'll never realise
So hush my love, there's something I need to tell you now
Your time has come, around again my sleepless one Your friend was young, hung and plastered
He never knew his own disaster
I think it's good, in fact it was faster
Cause it was you that he was after Hold me now,as if you'll never let me go
Unhand me now, as if you've always known my name His love was king, his love was master
He needed more, he needed always
He searched in vein for love and shelter
In every soul, in every hallway So you thought she'd be sweeter than your girlfriend Peter? Well give it a second chance cause you've yet to meet her We got the same ideas, we got the same old fears They're different colours sometimes, but, hey, who cares? Just years that tears our lives apart Just like the time that you tried to teach your cousin to walk He couldn't do it - push!-you told him twice Well, I do man, but it just don't jive Tried so hard to control my behaviour I tried so hard, so ahrd to believe you

But to no avail, as the chilly wind disguised as a sea breeze forced its way into my marrows. I clenched my teeth so that they wouldn't see my shivering, and proceeded to finish the training. I remember going to the San Jose's Museum of Technology and Innovation (or the "Tech" as locals like to call it) for a pre-marathon carbohydrate-loading pasta dinner. It was with my Army buddy, and we were enjoying it thoroughly, as a special IMAX movie showing of "Endurance: Shackleton's story of incredible adventure and survival." Oct 8 2002 15:55 Dear all,
I have this Java class, which through a C-interface calls some
native Fortran code. In native code, there are some arithematic
operations. Some of the numbers involved in these operations
are zero. However after some operations, like assign one number to another number, some zero becomes a very very small number (well, like 1.e-300). This number causes arithematic error in some Fortran functions. I wonder there is any solution to this problem, which can eliminate all these small numbers and assign them to zero. Please help if you have any knowledge on this. My platform is DEC Alpha (a cluster). Thx in advance.
