Overview and Degree Programs, 2002-2003 Official Catalog
Biostatistics involves the theory and application of statistical science to analyze public health problems and to further biomedical research.
    Degree Programs in Biostatistics
As described below, the department offers both 80-credit and 40-credit master of science (SM) programs and a doctor of science ( SD) program with a concentration in biostatistics, as well as an 80-credit SM program and an SD program with a concentration in health decision sciences. Detailed information about requirements and elective options can be found in a handbook distributed by the department. A master of public health program in quantitative methods and a doctoral program in molecular epidemiology are described in the interdisciplinary section of this catalog. For information about schoolwide requirements for master's and doctoral degrees, see Degree Programs, Admissions, and Enrollment. The programs offered by the Department of Biostatistics provide rigorous training in the development of methodology, collaboration, teaching, and consultation on a broad spectrum of health-related problems. The department prepares students for academic and private-sector research careers in the fields of biostatistics and health decision sciences. Recent graduates have assumed faculty posts at universities, as well as positions in research laboratories, federal government centers, pharmaceutical companies, and research institutes.

CENTER FOR BIOSTATISTICS IN AIDS RESEARCH (CBAR)
The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) is a Center at the Harvard School of Public Health whose mission is to foster and conduct statistical scientific activity in clinical trials and other public health research areas in HIV disease, to promote innovative strategies for medical interventions and study design, and to provide education and training relevant to statistical aspects of HIV disease research. The largest project of CBAR is the Statistical and Data Analysis Center (SDAC) of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). The ACTG is a clinical cooperative group dedicated to AIDS research and is funded by the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases ( NIAID ), a branch of the National Institutes of Health ( NIH ). Other CBAR projects include the Immune Response Corporation (IRC) clinical trials and the Neurologic AIDS Research Consortium (NARC), which funds neurological investigations for some ACTG investigators. Further information is available on the relationships among CBAR, SDAC

    Welcome
As you review the information contained in the Website, you will see that the Department provides training in statistical methodology leading to an M.S. or Ph.D. degree as well as training in applying quantitative methods to public health problems leading to an M.P.H. or Dr.P.H. degree. Students interested in the Ph.D. also have the opportunity to specialize in statistical genetics. In all of our degree programs the students will apply statistical methodology to problems in public health and medicine. The extensive experience of the faculty in addressing "real world problems" helps the students "bridge the gap" between their theoretical knowledge base and the practical aspects of addressing complex, multidisciplinary public health and biomedical issues. In addition to an extensive collaborative effort the Department of Biostatistics is committed to the development of statistical methodology in order to better analyze and interpret studies in public health and medicine. Areas of methodological development include survival analysis, missing data analysis, clinical trials design, ROC analysis, stochastic modeling, and sequential methods. The academic program provides doctoral students with the necessary tools to subsequently develop an area of independent methodological research.

Welcome to the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology
B iostatistics and epidemiology are considered the basic sciences of public health; together they provide the knowledge base for preventive medicine and public health practice. The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology is dedicated to learning and scholarship, and to a balanced program of teaching, research and service for its faculty. E pidemiology is the study of the distribution and dynamics of disease and health in populations and the inter-relationships of the various forces that influence the frequency of disease in populations. The primary objective of epidemiology is to search for causative factors and determinants of disease as well as to advance the body of knowledge that will make it possible to control and/or prevent disease, that is, to optimize health.
