The research within the Division of Fluid Mechanics is devoted to studies of flow phenomena of both fundamental and applied character. The major part of the research is concerned with industrial flow processes: hydropower flows, metallurgical flows and fibre composite manufacturing. The research involve both analytical, numerical and experimental methods. In hydropower flows numerical simulations are made of the flow in a draft tube of a water turbine. 9. Fluid Mechanics At Virginia Tech
Calculations and Equations of fluid mechanics An online fluid dynamics calculator.
    http://www.eng.vt.edu/fluids
Fluid mechanics is one of the oldest and broadest fields of engineering. It encompasses aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, vortex dynamics, gas dynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), convection heat transfer, flows of turbomachinery, acoustics, biofluids, physical oceanography, atmospheric dynamics, wind engineering, and the dynamics of two-phase flows. Modern design of aircraft, spacecraft, automobiles, ships, land and marine structures, power and propulsion systems, or heat exchangers is impossible without a clear understanding of the relevant fluid mechanics. Virginia Tech's Fluid Mechanics faculty comprises some of the nation's top researchers in this dynamic field. The purpose of our site is to provide you with a survey of the expertise found here in beautiful Southwest Virginia. Whether you are a prospective graduate student, a prospective undergraduate student, or a practicing engineer looking for expert advice, we hope you will find these pages helpful.

GALLERY OF FLUID DYNAMICS One of the most attractive features of fluid mechanics is the beauty of the flows one encounters. Whether one is observing vortex streets, the potential flow around an airfoil or body, shock refraction or diffraction, or waves breaking on a beach the aesthetic appeal of fluid mechanics is impossible to deny. Because of this visual appeal of all things fluid, many people have generated Fluid Flow Galleries; this is my version of the genre. The approach here is to include images and pictures from a very wide variety of areas and to add short explanations and discussions of the physics. This is in keeping with my general view that the pictures are not only pretty, but they are an excellent opportunity to learn something about the frequently invisible world of physics. To get started, just click on the general categories listed below, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Unlike an elastic solid which responds to a shear stress with a recoverable deformation, a fluid responds with an irrecoverable flow. Variables needed to define a fluid and its environment are: Quantity Symbol Object Units pressure p scalar N/m velocity v vector m/s density r scalar kg/m viscosity m scalar kg/m-s body force b vector N/kg time t scalar s Examples of fluids include gases and liquids. Typically, liquids are considered to be incompressible, whereas gases are considered to be compressible. However, there are exceptions in everyday engineering applications.
