According to the University of Melbourne publication "Research Management Plan 1993-1994, A Strategy for Excellence" the first listed research strength of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is Fluid Mechanics - Turbulence . The fluid mechanics group has won world renown for its high quality research using hot-wire anemometry combined with flow visualisation and more recently particle image velocimetry. For example, the following two figures show the flow visualization of a wake and the velocity vector field obtained using the unique "flying hot wire" system where a hot-wire probe scans a flow field at high speed so as to overcome problems of flow reversal and large angular changes in flow direction. Externally illuminated single-sided wake pattern passing a hot-wire probe.

Unlike an elastic solid which responds to a shear stress with a recoverable deformation, a fluid responds with an irrecoverable flow. Variables needed to define a fluid and its environment are: Quantity Symbol Object Units pressure p scalar N/m velocity v vector m/s density r scalar kg/m viscosity m scalar kg/m-s body force b vector N/kg time t scalar s Examples of fluids include gases and liquids. Typically, liquids are considered to be incompressible, whereas gases are considered to be compressible. However, there are exceptions in everyday engineering applications. Announcement and Call for Papers International Journal of Fluid Mechanics Research For the past 20 years, Fluid Mechanics Research (prior to 1992 Fluid Mechanics-Soviet Research ) has offered broad coverage of the entire field of fluid mechanics including flow of compressible and incompressible fluids, vapor-liquid and slurry flows, turbulence, waves, boundary layers, wakes, channel and nozzle flow, fluid-structure interaction, lubrication, flow in porous media, flow through turbo-machinery, aerodynamics and rheology as well as new and innovative measurement techniques. The journal's coverage is now being broadened to encompass research in the general area of transport phenomena where convective, diffusional and chemical reaction processes are important and to include biological systems as well as technological and geophysical systems. Fluid Mechanics Research has now merged with the TsAGI Journal , a publication of the world-famous Central Aero-Hydrodynamics Institute in Russia. This will position the new
