Experimental, analytical, and computational fluid mechanics comprise this focus area. Turbulence plays a major part, with experimental studies of its basic structure and of its transport effects, and with analytical work directed toward the realistic modeling of turbulent flows. There is extensive collaboration, via the Internet, telephone, and fax, with researchers at Los Alamos, NASA Langley and NASA Ames Research Laboratories, Arizona State, Stanford, ICASE, the University of London, and Princeton. The facilities in the wind tunnel lab boast a state-of-the-art, boundary-layer wind tunnel, which provides a test bed for probing the fundamental nature of turbulent flows; a custom, water-cooled, laser velocimetry system, which is capable of "ultra-near-wall" velocity measurements; a pulsed, Nd:YAG laser system, used for visualizing and mapping complex flow structures; and two multi-channel thermal anemometers with specially-designed hot-wire probes for multi-component scalar transport measurements. Computational research in areas of turbulence, multi-phase flow, combustion, semi-conductor material manufacturing and theoretical fluid dynamics are carried out extensively utilizing the state-of-art super-computer clusters hosted at the

The Institute of Hydraulic Machines and Fluid Mechanics (IMHEF) is a research and teaching institute within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne Switzerland
The IMHEF is divided into three laboratories, each having its own specialized equipment and staff, and complementary responsibilities for research and teaching.
  • Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (LMF)
    At the LMF, located at the Ecublens site, basic as well as applied research topics in fluid mechanics are studied by experimental, computational and theoretical means. Particular areas of expertise include hydrodynamic instabilities, rheology, transition and turbulence
  • Hydraulic Machines Laboratory (LMH)
    hydraulic turbines , including their design, performance, operation and testing. The LMH thus deals with the important technological implementations of fluid mechanics, taken in a broad mechanical engineering context.
  • Computational Engineering Laboratory (LIN)
    The LIN, located at the Ecublens site, is involved in a wide range of basic as well as applied research topics in fluid mechanics that are studied from a theoretical and computational point of view.

Introduction
Fluid mechanics studies air, water, and other fluids in motion: compression, turbulence, diffusion, wave propagation, and so on. Mathematically this includes study of solutions of differential equations, including large-scale numerical methods (e.g the finite-element method), although the development of those techniques is more properly in section 65 (Numerical Analysis).

2A1 SURFACE TENSION - SOAP FILM DEMONSTRATION
USES
- Demonstrates the presence and properties of surface tension in a soap film.
APPARATUS
- Soap solution in a glass tray.
- 2 small loops for blowing soap bubbles.
- square plate with light spring attached.
- Rectangular loop with moveable crossbar.
- Large metal loop with interior thread loop. - X-acto knife.
NOTES
- The surface-minimizing properties of soap films are demonstrated by the rectangular loop or the metal loop with attached loop of thread. With the lat ter, the X-acto knife is used to carefully puncture the film within the thread loop, upon which the loop becomes fully circular.

    Fluid Mechanics Research Group The Fluid Mechanics Research Group performs research in a wide variety of areas, employing theoretical, experimental, and numerical tools. Current projects include studies in turbulent jets and mixing layers, flow control using piezoelectric actuators, hydrodynamic stability of flows driven by surface-tension gradients, fluid mechanics in microgravity, thin films, stability of unsteady swirling flows, vortex breakdown and, in conjunction with faculty in bioengineering, work on hemodyanmics, on flow in bioreactors, and on the fluid dynamics of the heart. Support for research in fluid mechanics comes from several sources such as the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, the American Heart Association, the Whitaker Foundation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as private companies. Facilities include the Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory (FMRL) at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and diagnostic tools suitable for research work in the manipulation and control of shear flows. The design and renovation of the 2600 square foot laboratory space, which included the installation of a 50 ton water chiller unit, was completed in May 1993, and the installation of equipment began in June of that year. The laboratory houses a low-speed, high-quality, open-return wind tunnel having a test section measuring one meter by one meter, a closed-return water shear layer facility, a number of air jets including a swirling jet, and a 300-gallon water tank.
