http://www.smokylake.com/history/missions/methodist.htm
A Brief History of the Politics of the Methodist Church in Canada Most of the early Methodist preachers in Canada were American, many of them loyalists. But in 1814 or so the British Wesleyans sent some preachers to Britain to a post in Nova Scotia, at the request of the people in that area, but to the distress of the American Methodists. Over the next while more and more British Weslyans came. By 1817 there were some 166 followers of the Weslyans and about 3,301 followers of the American Methodists. By 1820 those numbers had grown to 744 British Weslyans and 5,991 Methodist Episcopals. (Oliver, 113) In 1820 American Methodists in the Upper Canada were petitioning the American Conference to get the British Weslyans to stop competing with them. A number of them also wanted to have a separate annual conference for Canada. The former of those issues was dealt with first and an agreement was made that the American Methodists gave up Lower Canada to the British Weslyans and the British Weslyans gave up Upper Canada (with the exception of Kingston, which was a military location, and therefore had a lot of British soldiers). (Oliver 113) The first Canadian Conference met on August 25, 1824 and a Missionary Society was formed as an Auxiliary to the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. By May 1827 the American General Conference decided to withdraw jurisdiction from the Canadian Methodists and in 1828 the first independent Canadian Methodist Conference met. (Oliver, 114)

An Introduction

The Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library's holdings of religious materials are chiefly in the Christian and Jewish traditions. The most distinctive feature is material in American and British Methodism, with particular depth in Wesleyana. The collection of Wesleyana and British Methodism material assembled by Dr. Frank Baker, a longtime scholar of Methodism and professor at Duke University, comprises a large part of the library's Methodist materials. The collection consists of manuscripts and published writings by and about John Wesley (1703-1791), his brother Charles (1707-1788), and other members of the Wesley family. There is also material concerning the rise and development of British and American Methodism ; books the Wesleys drew upon for their reading, study, writing, and publication; materials concerning Methodist background in the Church of England; and other items from the time in which Methodism arose . These materials along with materials in the Divinity School Library comprise one of the most comprehensive Wesleyana collections in the world.
The library also holds British religious pamphlets, tracts, and sermons

Except for the Society of Friends , all religious groups in America supported slavery. In the South black people were not usually allowed to attend church services. Those churches that did accept them would segregate them from white worshipers.
One of the main reasons why masters did not want their slaves to become Christians involved the Bible. They feared that slaves might interpret the teachings of Jesus Christ as being in favour of equality. This was one of the main reasons why most plantation owners did what they could to stop their slaves from learning to read.

Black History in Guelph and Wellington County: Religion and the British Methodist Episcopal Church The church was the most important institution in most Black communities. Church leaders were often spokespersons to the larger community. The denominations were usually Baptist or Methodist. Baptist congregations encouraged a democratic participation by the election of their ministers. Black Methodists, coldly received in White congregations, turned to the African Methodist Episcopal church, which entered the colony from the United States in 1838 and by 1840 had organized an Upper Canada Conference. The Conference was instrumental in supplying the church with ministers and sending bishops occasionally to oversee its work. In 1856, feelings arose that reforms had to take place, and an independent British Methodist Episcopal Church was formed. A British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church was started in Guelph in 1870, in a frame building on Market Street. Rev. Thomas Jefferson was pastor. The original congregation was comprised of former fugitive slaves from the United States. On September 18, 1880, numerous citizens gathered to witness the laying of the cornerstone of the new stone church on Essex Street.

T he building type associated with the refugees that is most likely to have survived is the church. It represented the institution most central to the lives of the Underground Railroad settlers. Churches ministering specifically to the black population were established largely in response to negative attitudes of the white majority, who, while decrying slavery, were often unwilling to accept the formerly enslaved on an equal footing. The black churches became the most visible symbol of the parallel societies that evolved in places where numbers of Underground Railroad refugees settled.
The African Methodist
Episcopal Church

By the 1820s, the American-based African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church had established branches throughout southwestern Ontario. Within a decade it had spread as far east as Toronto and had a membership of some 2,000 congregants. The Nazrey AME Church, hand-built by its congregation and preserved as part of the North American Black Historical Museum in Amherstburg, has been designated a national historic site. The British Methodist
Episcopal Church

After 1850 and passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, it became increasingly dangerous for African Canadian church officials to travel to the annual conferences of the AME Church in the United States. Desiring a more accessible church government closer to home and anxious to underscore allegiance to their new homeland, members of the AME Church in Canada began to lobby for local self-government of their church. Eventually they succeeded, and in 1856 the

Church-going was the center of the black refugee community in Canada; churches often functioned as meetinghouses, theaters, and gathering places. This church has been in existence since 1814 (when Niagara Falls was known as "Drummondville"), and the building was erected by former slaves in 1836. The chuch was renamed for Robert Nathaniel Dett in 1983, after a former member of the church who became a teacher, musician, and world-traveling choir master. Also at the site is the Norval Johnson Heritage Library, the namesake of a local woman responsible for keeping the church alive in leaner years.

St. Catharines has been a refuge for Black escapees for over 150 years. Harriet Tubman used the town as a center for activity, and Mary Ann Shadd opened a school for Black children here. The BME church in St. Catharines has been around for over 150 years, and has functioned as a center for the Black community since its founding.
