Buddhist Quote of the Moment
The universe that we inhabit and our shared perception of it are the results of a common karma. Likewise, the places that we will experience in future rebirths will be the outcome of the karma that we share with the other beings living there. The actions of each of us, human or nonhuman, have contributed to the world in which we live. We all have a common responsibility for our world and are connected with everything in it.

PAUL WILLIAMS

The Buddhist position on rebirth is always stated to be that the rebirth is neither the same as, nor different from, the one who died. The Buddhist sees our present life as a causal continuum. We are constantly changing, with each moment of our life arising in causal dependence upon a preceding moment that has since ceased, and acting to cause the next moment in the continuum. It is a bit like the flow of a river. This flow that we are is made of Five Strands : physical matter, sensations, determinate perceptions, additional factors like volition (intentions), and consciousness. These are called the Five Aggregates (Sanskrit: skandha ). They are each a flow, each constantly changing. Upon this fivefold flow we superimpose for everyday practical purposes a singular identity, called by a name like 'Archibald', or 'Fiona'. Thus we are in fact a bundle, or a bundle of bundles. But because of beginningless ignorance we have a tendency to overrate this practical everyday unity, and to think that there is some sort of unchanging essence constantly present. The presupposed unchanging essence, the stable referent for the use of 'I', we think of as our 'Self' (Sanskrit:

    The Music of Tibetan Buddhism
    Look for musical examples
T ibet stands at the influence of three civilization, the Turko-Mongolian, the Chinese and the Indian. Enriched from time to time by influences from these, its own ancient tradition has developed in high isolation from the rest of the civilized world. This tradition embraces a very distinctive way of life and a music all its own. Music plays an important part in Tibetan life and has three aspects:
    • the folk-music - found in the daily lives of the people
    • an art music - cultivated especially by professional minstrels
    • the sacred chant and instrumental music of the Buddhist Liturgy and other rites - centering around the monasteries.
T he Lamas say "Religion is sound". The recitation of mantras , chanting and the playing of instrumental music are fundamental in their worship. For many ling hours, day after day, year after year, the red-robed monks intone their prayers, sitting cross-legged under the soft light of butter-lamps. Their cerebrations include the services of the regular Liturgy and various extra-liturgical rituals.

    A Brief History of Buddhism
    written by Konrad Plendl
    edited by Kristin King
Buddhism is a widespread and varied religion with many sects and schools. Since its history is perceived somewhat differently among the various schools, I will use the dates and accounts of the formation of Buddhism accepeted by most scholars. Although the line of Buddhism that leads to Zen will be emphasized, I will briefly mention other types. Gautama Buddha lived from about 563 to 483 BCE. (Some scholars place his life as much as a century later.) He was born a prince in present-day Nepal. As a member of the ruling class he lacked nothing, but like many in our present age he found that material wealth did not guarantee satisfaction. He left the life of a prince and became a wandering ascetic, studying with various teachers. Six years later, he found enlightenment after spending the night meditating under a ficus tree. For the next forty-five years he wandered the Ganges Valley of North India, teaching what he had realized. The basic teachings of the Buddha can be summarized in the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. The essence of the Four Noble Truths is as follows:

    34. Thai Buddhism
Information on Thailand's most popular religion.
    http://www.track-of-the-tiger.com/html/buddhism.html
BUDDHISM Note: I have chosen to include a more in-depth explanation of Buddhism than is normally written in a guidebook on Thailand. Over the years, I have found that visitors to the Kingdom are more than a little curious about Buddhism, particularly as in these changing times the doctrine and practice of the various Christian faiths appear to provide few answers to the ever-increasing and more complex problems facing modern man. There is no such thing as a good Buddhist or a bad Buddhist, viewed in the same context as someone being considered a good or bad Christian. Buddhism is more of a personal philosophy than a group religion. An individual following the ‘middle path’, the long road to enlightenment encounters and overcomes the obstacles at his own pace. How good a Buddhist he is, or how far along the path he has travelled, is unimportant to anyone other than himself. Where Christian religions preach that one must have ‘blind faith’ in the aspects of the doctrine that you may have trouble accepting, Buddhism teaches that you should ‘question everything’ until you find an answer that satisfies you. Buddhism not only teaches tolerance, it practices it. It does not claim that other religions are false, it encourages you to make your own judgements. There is no hard sell, and no requirement for monks to ‘save’ a quota of souls.
