A Time for Prayer

As we begin to sense even greater vulnerability for ourselves, our community, our country and the world we share, we as Christians know the power of prayer. That is why we are encouraging each of you to take time each day to stop and pray. Each day at noon whatever time zone you may find yourself in, stop for five minutes, close our eyes and say a prayer for our church, our country and our world until the threat of war is no more. We still look for peace : resources from Disciples in faithful response to the war in Iraq.

Disciples of Christ
A sect founded in the United States of America by Alexander Campbell. Although the largest portion of his life and prodigious activity was spent in the United States, Alexander Campbell was born, 12 September, 1788, in the County Antrim, Ireland. On his father's side he was of Scottish extraction; his mother, Jane Corneigle, was of Huguenot descent. Both parents are reported to have been persons of deep piety and high literary culture. His father, after serving as minister to the Anti-Burgher Church in Ahorey and director of a prosperous academy at Richhill, emigrated to the United States and engaged in the oft-attempted and ever futile effort "to unite All Christians as one communion on a purely scriptural basis", the hallucination of so many noble minds, the only outcome of which must always be against the will of the Founder, to increase the discord of Christendom by the creation of a new sect. In 1808 Alexander embarked with the family to join his father, but was shipwrecked on the Scottish coast and took the opportunity to prepare himself for the ministry at the University of Glasgow. In 1809 he migrated to the United States, and found in Washington County, Pennsylvania, the nucleus of the new movement in the "Christian Association of Washington", under the auspices of which was issued a "Declaration and Address", setting forth the objects of the association. It was proposed "to establish no new sect, but to persuade

Iraq Relief Begins

As the U.S.-led military action against Iraq continues and coalition forces approach Baghdad, concern grows among relief workers in the region that the long-standing humanitarian crisis in Iraq may worsen and affect neighboring countries if large numbers of persons flee the country. Disciples and Iraq
The war has deeply divided the world and our country, and it has also divided congregations and families within the US. I do firmly believe we can be united in our efforts to respond to the great humanitarian needs that were already in Iraq and will continue to increase now as the war proceeds.

...and welcome to the Disciples of Christ Historical Society home page. We are a keeper of a living dream. In the early nineteenth century Thomas and Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone proclaimed a vision that the church of Jesus Christ is essentially, intentionally and constitutionally one. Their dream continues to live through three groups of about four million members who lift up that message among other communions of vastly diverse theological orientations. The three groups of the Stone-Campbell Movement are the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ and the a cappella Churches of Christ. Our Society houses 35,000 volumes, 50,000 files plus personal and institutional archival collections from across the 200 years of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
You may be a life long member of our visionary movement or a person who is just stopping by. To all, we say welcome and enjoy the search. If we can be of further assistance you may reach us at mail@dishistsoc.org

http://www.sewanee.edu/Theology/DOCCFolder/DOCChome.html
Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) is an adult education program which provides an experience in building Christian community while encouraging individual spiritual growth. It began in 1975 at Trinity Church, New Orleans, under the leadership of the Reverend John Stone Jenkins. It is now under the auspices of the School of Theology Programs Center of the University of the South. To begin a DOCC program a team of clergy and laypersons are trained at the DOCC Summer Conference in Sewanee or one of the off-site conferences held at various locations around the country. A team consists of a presenter and two or more group facilitators. Clergy or theologically trained laypersons serve as presenters. At each of the 21 sessions, a 30-minute presentation is given. Then, the participants gather in small groups of about ten to discuss the significance of the presentation to their lives. In an accepting and caring atmosphere, group members can grow in awareness of the purpose and potential of the Church, and discover and define personal ministry. The fee for the program is $55 per person for the entire year.
