Stone, died in 1844. Date of Birth: Birth Place: Port Tobacco, Maryland Year Founded: Brief History: Barton W. Stone began preaching in 1801 in Kentucky during the start of the Second Great Awakening. During this time Stone took part in the Cane Ridge Revival and became burdened with the desire for Christian unity. By participating in this charismatic revival, he was violating the Presbyterian doctrine. Thus, around 1804, he and several others, decided to leave their organized religion, and on June twenty-eighth wrote The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery. (Tyler, 1894: 26) Their hopes, like those of Alexander Campbell , were to form a primitive church that was united as one body. In 1832, the Stoneites joined Campbell’s group, forming the Stone-Campbell Movement, but less than two decades later there was conflict within the sect. In 1906, the groups split; Stone’s followers became officially known as the Christian Church, or Disciples of Christ while Campbell’s group became known as the Churches of Christ (non-instrumental).

A Brief History of the Disciples of Christ in West Virginia By Terrance Hamm The church has had a profound effect on shaping and molding western cultures and the discovery of the western hemisphere afforded an opportunity for many seeking religious freedom to establish themselves in a new world where organized religions had no sway. The Disciples of Christ is one of those denominations whose creation grew out of several earlier groups who sought freedom to worship as they wished. The Disciples of Christ is a Protestant denomination that developed from several religious movements in the United States during the early 1800s. Its full name is the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) Its founders include three men from a Presbyterian background - Thomas Campbell and his son, Alexander, in Pennsylvania and Barton W. Stone in Kentucky. The church took its present name in 1968 as part of a general reorganization. Thomas Campbell was born in 1763 in County Down, Ireland. While in Ireland, Campbell served as a minister and founded an academy at Rich Hill. At age forty-five, he left his family, his church and his academy and migrated to America. On May 13, 1807, he stepped from the boat at Philadelphia into the meeting of the Associate Synod of North America, which represented all the Seceder Presbyterians in America. In 1808, Thomas Campbell wrote his family, requesting that they join him in Pennsylvania. The family set sail for America in August, 1809 and arrived in New York in September. Thomas and his family were reunited in western Pennsylvania where he had settled after leaving Philadelphia.

You can read about how to develop a good Bible reading plan Good News Bible The Good News Bible is a project of the American Bible Society to render the Bible in a form that unchurched people can understand. Disadvantages For people who attend church regularly and are familiar with the Bible, the fact that the Good News Bible does not use traditional religious vocabulary is a disadvantage. Since clarity is the overriding goal of this translation, it often seems to be inaccurate when compared to other translations, but it is in fact an accurate translation. Advantages The Good News Bible is written at a very low grade level and is consequently very easy to understand. It is excellent as story book. In fact, the Old Testament can be read from Genesis to 2 Kings as easily as a novel. Go to the top of this page J B Phillips (New Testament only) Disadvantages Many editions of the J B Phillips New Testament lack verse numbers. The wording is significantly different from other translations. Earlier editions are too British for Americans.
