ALL THINGS ZEN AN OPEN WINDOW INTO THE UNDERSTANDING OF ZEN I The following discourse is attributed to the Chinese Zen master Ch'ing yuan Wei-hsin of the T'ang Dynasty and provides a window into the understanding of Zen: Thirty years ago, before I began the study of Zen, I said, 'Mountains are mountains, waters are waters.' After I got insight into the truth of Zen through the instructions of a good master, I said, 'Mountains are not mountains, waters are not waters.' But now, having attained the abode of final rest, (that is, Enlightenment ) I say, 'Mountains are really mountains, waters are really waters.' He then asks, 'Are the three understandings the same or different?' Over and over in Zen and Buddhism something like 'All is illusion' or 'The world is delusion' is presented. The problem with such understandings if presented as being true or otherwise representitive of reality, absolute or otherwise in the final sense, is that any and all persons presenting the statement and any and all persons recieving the statement would be themselves immersed products in that self-same illusion or delusion. Offering or making decisions on anything at all from that illusional or delusional position would be questionable, inturn totally undermining any credibility on such a statement, understanding, or belief. Saying 'All is delusion' or 'The world is delusion' is by implication saying illusion/delusion IS , that is, that it exists, that it has it's own independent existence, existing independently without need.

That is what Edgar Cayce and a group of financial backers initially named the unique healing facility they built in Virginia Beach, Virginia, when they obtained its charter in 1928. Three-quarters of a century later, after numerous changes in ownership, the old building still stands tall, today as the headquarters of Edgar Cayce's continuing worldwide work. And in many respects the original name still fits. When it was constructed, Edgar Cayce considered the hospital a dream come true. As early as 1910, while working as a studio photographer who gave psychic readings in his spare time, he was notified by a reading that he was destined to operate a hospital. The death of a boy whose family was unable to find the unique treatments Cayce had recommended for the child made a searing impressionhe wanted to provide the needed treatments. But how? He was still years away from making a career exclusively of giving psychic readings. Furthermore, his readings suggested that a hospital could best be located in a tiny Virginia seaside resort he had never heard of, Virginia Beach. Cayce's work took him instead from his native Kentucky to Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, Ohio, Colorado, Illinois, and New Yorkbut he never forgot what his Source had recommended. He even spent several years wildcatting for oil in hopes of financing such a healing institution. When several offers came from other parts of the country to finance a treatment center for him in their communitiesone man even began constructionhe maintained his faith that Virginia Beach was the proper place for it. The last of these benefactors, Morton Blumenthal, a New York stockbroker, was enthusiastic about the choice of Virginia. "You must go there," he told Edgar, "and I'll provide the money." So, in 1925 Cayce moved his family to Virginia Beach from Dayton, Ohio in order to get started.

Introduction: Nietzsche as Critic and Captive of Enlightenment This attempt to overcome Enlightenment, however, has a history that begins well before our century, and one of the most important episodes in this history is to be found in the nineteenth century with Friedrich Nietzsche. Before postmodernism and poststructuralism, Nietzsche provided a virulent and comprehensive critique of the Enlightenment. The attack on Enlightenment is a thread that runs through his entire corpus. An examination of his work makes it clear, however, that Nietzsche was unable to overcome this pervasive, intractable tradition. Despite his best efforts, Nietzsche's work contains persistent elements of Enlightenment. Human rationality also implies for Enlightened thinkers an attempt to gain knowledge and understanding of the natural world. As Norman Hampson writes, "human reason, operating by means of careful observation and checking its conclusions by further observation or experiment, could for the first time in the history of man reveal the mechanism of the natural world in which he had lived for so long like a fearful and wondering child."6 In many ways, the extreme rationalism of Descartes, its traditional alternative, empiricism, and the debate between them constitute the part of the Enlightenment which had the greatest influence in the nineteenth century. Darwin owed much of his faith in science and scientific progress to his Enlightened forebears, and Spencer's Enlightened politics acquired their distinctive character only when he added to them a very Enlightened kind of science.

The Enlightenment The characteristics of the Enlightenment are a scepticism towards the doctrines of the church, individualism, a belief in science and the experimental method, the use of reason, that education could be a catalyst of social change and the demand for political representation. Its main social and political consequence was the French revolution. The core period of the Enlightenment was second half of the eighteenth century. The thinkers associated with the Enlightenment include d'Holbach (1723-89) and the Encyclopedists in France, David Hume (1711-76) in Scotland and Kant in Germany. To understand the Enlightenment we have to look at what preceded it. The battle of ideas that was to culminate in the Enlightenment began in the seventeenth century. Francis Bacon (1561-1626) advocated the use of scientific method and René Descartes (1596-1650) proposed a critical rationalism . The Enlightenment can be understood as the culmination of the move away from the authority and dogmatism of the mediaeval and the awakening of modernity. Medieval philosophy combined Christian beliefs with the ideas of Plato and Aristotle. In the medieval world philosophers respected their predecessors and accepted their methods. If a new discovery about nature contradicted one of Aristotle's principles, for example, it would probably have been assumed that it was the discovery that was in error.
