From Gnosticism to a contemporary spirituality
by Sarah Benson
When I discovered Gnosticism and early Christianity, I felt like a detective who has finally found the vital clue to a baffling mystery. For maybe here lay the origins of contemporary Western spirituality. Today many religious scholars are returning to the origins of Christianity - the period before 'right belief' (which is the meaning of the Greek word, ortho-doxia) replaced the culture of experiences and beliefs. Email this Page to a Friend The word Gnostic derives from the Greek word meaning knowledge, or insight that which revealed God, the origin and destiny of mankind, and how the spiritual element in people could find redemption by uniting with the spiritual in the cosmos. The pre-Christian Gnostic movement was complex. The Jewish sects of what is now northern Syria provided the foundation for Gnostic ideas. These sects were also influenced by Iranian religious thought (Zoroastrianism) and by the Greek-speaking Jews. Ancient Egyptian spiritual culture was also incorporated, for instance the mystery cult of Isis and Osiris. Existing within the Roman Empire, the Gnostics were nevertheless also in conflict with it. They were a movement of the spirit without definite frontiers, in many lands, through many centuries. Since then, scholars have indicated that the Roman Empire's role in the crucifixion of Christ was significant. Could the early confluence of Christian and Judaic ideas have implications for the religious and political conflicts that still exist today could people of diverse religious backgrounds find common ground once again in ideas arising from the search for truth?

Course Description This course offers a critical examination of "Gnosticism," an ancient religious movement whose participants ("Gnostics") claimed to have saving knowledge ("Gnosis") of the self, the divine, of all that exists. Gnosticism flourished in the ancient Mediterranean world of the second to fourth centuries C.E., but it has also appeared in several contemporary forms. Readings will focus on recent scholarship on Gnosticism and on the ancient evidence for Gnosticism, especially the writings of the Nag Hammadi library (discovered in 1945). The primary goals of the course are to develop the skills of understanding Gnostic texts and to become familiar with the varieties of Gnostic thought, especially those of "Sethianism," of Thomas traditions, and of the Valentinian school. We will also consider:
  • the forms and meanings of Gnostic mythology;

Sitting in the sunstream of a midwinter afternoon, the young JavaSoft evangelist pulls out what looks like a credit card with an embedded computer chip, but it is no ordinary smart card. "Java allows this card to exhibit many behaviors," Matsumura says ardently, well aware that he is ascribing human qualities to an inanimate object.

Matsumura says his zeal for his work stems from a fervent belief that he is a foot soldier in a revolution - one that happens to be rooted in technology. And he is not alone. San Francisco just finished hosting the annual Macworld Expo. Part trade show, part spiritual crusade, the expo is a gathering of nearly 100,000 loyalists who came to reaffirm their faith in the Mac. Alice watches over Travis, acting as a protectorate of sorts, and helps Travis bring back helpful information about God, the Other Side, and the reason for life. At the age of fifteen, he began giving professional psychic readings to locals in his then area of northeast Ohio and at the ripe old age of 18, he started his national clientele listing with calls coming in from all over the United States. Again, this was all prompted by his reputation as a valid medium. To date, Travis gives spiritual counseling and founds an organization entitled

Gnosticism Gnosticism (after , the Greek word for "knowledge" or "insight") is the name given to a loosely organized religious and philosophical movement that flourished in the first and second centuries CE. The exact origin(s) of this school of thought cannot be traced, although it is possible to locate influences or sources as far back as the second and first centuries BCE, such as the early treatises of the Corpus Hermeticum , the Jewish Apocalyptic writings, and especially Platonic philosophy and the Hebrew Scriptures themselves. In spite of the diverse nature of the various Gnostic sects and teachers, certain fundamental elements serve to bind these groups together under the loose heading of "Gnosticism" or "Gnosis." Chief among these elements is a certain manner of "anti-cosmic world rejection" that has often been mistaken for mere dualism. According to the Gnostics, this world, the material cosmos, is the result of a primordial error on the part of a supra-cosmic, supremely divine being, usually called Sophia (Wisdom) or simply the Logos . This being is described as the final emanation of a divine hierarchy, called the

Gurdjieff and the Enigmatic Enneagram The following article emerged out of a footnote to a larger investigation into the relationship between Dr. Carl Jung, neo-gnosticism, and the MBTI.
Who is George Gurdjieff, and why is he having such a massive indirect impact on our churches today? Why in particular are ‘post-charismatic’ Roman Catholics, especially well-meaning nuns, becoming caught up in his questionable practices?(1) The Rev. Dr. Robert Innes, Lecturer in Systematic Theology at St. John’s College: Durham, England, tells us that the man credited with bringing the Enneagram to the West is George Gurdjieff, a Greek-Armenian from what is now the Republic of Georgia. While still a teen, Gurdjieff became immersed in occultic practices such as astrology, mental telepathy, spiritism, table turning, fortune telling and demon possession. Gurdjieff claimed that while he was in Afghanistan in 1897, he visited a monastery of the esoteric Sarmouni sect where he learned their mystical Sufi dancing, psychic powers and the Enneagram.(2) Reverend Ed Hird, Past National Chair

    Introduction
November 10, 1998 by: Allan Turner In this series of articles, we will be taking a critical look at a philosophically united confederacy that calls itself "the New Age movement." This movement, referred to by some of its adherents as "the Aquarian Conspiracy," is a curious blending of Humanism, ancient sorcery, Eastern religion, the occult, Gnosticism, the Human Potential movement, and modern physics. This movement reflects the current shift that has taken place in the world view of Western culture. (This series was first published in the Gospel Anchor in July, 1986.) Although Kipling told us that "East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet," in reality, Western culture has been looking to the East for quite some time now. One of the purposes of this series will be to document this shift. When this series is behind you, you will realize that you have been more than a little affected by this conspiracy. The shift that has taken place in the world view of Western culture has truly touched us all. For me personally, discovering the numerous influences of the New Age movement in my life, and in the lives of those around me, was much more shocking that when I first became aware of the threat of Humanism—a discovery that was nothing less than overwhelming.

Gnosticism was a Middle Eastern religious and philosophical orientation that grew strong in the 1st century AD, exercising strong influence on Judaism and Christianity and at times representing a strong and competing theology. The gnostic tendencies in both these two religions was defeated in the 2nd century, but gnosticism survived for centuries in other religions.
The name comes from the Greek word for 'knowledge', and points at a belief that salvation comes from a insight in a secret knowledge. Gnosticism also involve that man has a capacity to discover truths by the help of the intellect alone.
Gnosticism is furthermore recognised for its dualism, which is the theory that everything is to be understood as a fight between two powers or two qualities; light; the good or the responsible; and darkness, the bad, the evil or the irresponsible. In this dualism man plays a role, but man is of minimal importance to the totality of this cosmic battle.
Central figures, religions and writings of Gnosticism include Simon Magus, mentioned in the

Attempts to reinterpret Jesus based on the site author's understanding of ancient gnosticism.
    http://members.tripod.com/cryskernan/gnostic_jesus.htm
The Gnostic Jesus by the Institute for Gnostic Studies Introduction To fully understand the Gnostic view of Jesus involves a radical reappraisal of how we see Christianity and Judaism. For the Gnostic, Gnosis is not the knowledge of the masses, but a secret wisdom - a comprehension only available to those who know . It is esoteric and results from a direct experience of the divine - exoteric Christianity is at best, its outer core or form, at worst, it’s corruption. The major stimulus for the rebirth of the Gnostic worldview was the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts, these texts discovered in 1945 comprise a veritable library of esoteric wisdom, it comprised some fifty two texts in either part or whole. Their importance cannot be underplayed, for example, Elaine Pagels in the Gnostic Gospels states “ Now for the first time we have the opportunity to find out about the earliest Christian heresy, for the first time the heretics can speak for themselves”. The importance of these Gnostic texts is that they educate us regarding the teachings of the early Gnostics and from these we can re-construct what could probably be considered as “the first form of Christianity”. It seems from available evidence likely that the modern forms of Judaism and Christianity are the heresies that developed from this early Gnosis, rather than the other way around. When we begin to consider this paradigm, then the find at Nag Hammadi becomes of prime importance. The Gnostic Myth The world came about through a mistake. For he who created it wanted to create it imperishable and immortal. He fell short of attaining his desire.

    http://www.themystica.com/mystica/articles/g/gnosticism.html
Back to Home Page or Contents Page or Religions and Sects or Index Gnosticism W hen writing about Gnosticism it is very difficult to present an objective view of this system of belief or its participants. The reason for this is that there are very few exhibits of first hand copies of their writings. These writings were burned by the orthodox Christians from the first century onward. Gnosticism was considered heretical and Gnostics heretics. So, until the find of Nag Hammadi in 1945 little was known of Gnosticism and the Gnostics except from the writings of their adversaries. One of the main things which separated the Gnostics from orthodox Christians was the mysticism of their beliefs. It began with their views of God and creation. They viewed the One which they called the true God as having a feminine part which was the Spirit. In accord, they also held that Jesus came from God and the Spirit to form the Trinity. Also, the Gnostic differed with the orthodox Christians on two other major issues: the salvation of man and the person of Jesus. They disagreed with the theory that man was sinful by nature, but believed man erred through ignorance; by knowledge man could correct his ways and gain salvation. The special knowledge which the Gnostics subscribed to was known as "gnois." Gnois was not a logical type of knowledge as one might gain in the study of mathematics or chemistry, but it was an intuitive or reflexive type of knowledge which comes from the study of man's inner self or soul. Any other knowledge did not concern the Gnostics. They called this gnois illuminated Logos because they believed it led to man's salvation.

New Age philosophy is based on ancient traditions, alchemy, gnosticism, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry. Its roots are explored in Eastern and Western traditions.
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~wichm/newage3.html
    The roots of the
    NEW AGE
    PART ONE
The New Age movement is hardly novel! Its philosophy is rooted in ancient traditions, often based on mystical experiences, each within a different context. Anthropologically, there have always been (wo)men within "primitive" societies who were looked upon as possessing special knowledge and power. Medicine men, or shamans, had undergone a spontaneous catharsis, or were initiated and felt called upon to maintain contact with the spirit world for the clan. When communities became more complex and organized there was little place for these loners. Society began to specialize, people realized and felt drawn to form groups, guilds, or societies, to ensure continuance and growing perfection. Contact with the spirit world was given into the hands of organized religion, which also provided an established answer to questions about the unknown and the Highest Power. People who felt endowed with special powers could hardly adapt themselves to the corset of established faith. They went underground. Yet they endeavoured to contact kindred spirits and pupils willing to follow in their footsteps to pass on the work. Esoteric tradition became handed down in spiritual groups, communes, or fraternities. Their mutual devotion resulted in a high degree of perfection comparable to the guilds of craftsmen. In their mystical experiences they beheld a spiritual reality that could hardly be reconciled with the dogmatic representation given by the churches. When passing on their experiences, they had to exercise extreme caution, lest being accused of heresy. Yet knowledgeable minds would understand their veiled writings, symbolic representations, or even gestures.

    Gnosticism and the Gnostic Jesus
    by Douglas Groothuis
from the Christian Research Journal, Fall 1990, page 8. The Editor-in-Chief of the Christian Research Journal is Elliot Miller.
Popular opinion often comes from obscure sources. Many conceptions about Jesus now current and credible in New Age circles are rooted in a movement of spiritual protest which, until recently, was the concern only of the specialized scholar or the occultist. This ancient movement Gnosticism provides much of the form and color for the New Age portrait of Jesus as the illumined Illuminator: one who serves as a cosmic catalyst for others' awakening.
Many essentially Gnostic notions received wide attention through the sagacious persona of the recently deceased Joseph Campbell in the television series and best-selling book, The Power of Myth. For example, in discussing the idea that "God was in Christ," Campbell affirmed that "the basic Gnostic and Buddhist idea is that that is true of you and me as well."
Jesus is an enlightened example who "realized in himself that he and what he called the Father were one, and he lived out of that knowledge of the Christhood of his nature." According to Campbell, anyone can likewise live out his or her Christ nature.[1]
