Language can be both help and trick us in cross-cultural communication. The following material is written in Messianic Jewish terminology and style. It shows us the challenges we "Christians" [ more ] face in cross-cultural communication with Jews. This material is based on Return of the Remnant: The Rebirth of Messianic Judaism Messianic terminology is used to express the biblical faith in the Messiah [ more ] because such terminology was how the New Covenant [ more ] faith was expressed in its earliest stages. Messianic believers like talking about their faith in the Messiah in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage and culture. Belief in the Messiah is consistent with being Jewish. He is the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. Using Messianic terminology imparts faith in Messiah to children, friends and family in a manner consistent with Jewish heritage. Messianic terms communicate biblical truth without the negative baggage of historical anti-Semitism.

Frequently Asked Questions About Messianic Judaism
(from July 1999 newsletter, Hineni) 1. What is Messianic Judaism? When did it begin?
Messianic Judaism began 2,000 years ago when thousands of Jews became convinced that Yeshua (Jesus) was the Messiah. They lived within the Jewish community and practiced the traditions and customs of Jewish people. 2. How does Messianic Judaism differ from traditional Judaism? How does it differ from traditional Christianity?
It differs from traditional Judaism in that we believe the Messiah has come, and therefore we read the books about him and his teachings-the New Testament. It differs from traditional Christianity in that we are connected to our Jewish roots, traditions, and practices. 3. In Messianic Judaism, what is considered the "authorized" way of doing things? What model is used?
Generally, the synagogue model is used with the addition of new songs and the study of the New Testament. 4. Why are "Jewish holidays" still observed rather than "Christian holidays"?

    10. What Is God's "personal" Name... Jehovah Or Yahweh?
messianic judaism on the true name of God.

    Jehovah
If You Know Him, Then What Is His Name?

Most Bible believers live a lifetime without ever seeing the glaring inconsistency in their approach to the Creator of the universe. Unlike other major world religions, whose adherents use a specific name for their deity, the name employed exclusively for the Heavenly Father worshiped in Christianity is a common and generic title, or titles. While the heathen faithful understand exactly whom they worship, millions of churchgoers call on and worship their Creator by the everyday terms lord and god, and then proceed to ask, "Do you know Him?" The obvious fact is, churchianity has neglected the Heavenly Father’s revealed, personal Name. Many don’t even realize that He has a name, believing that the title God is a name because it is captialized. All the while they accept the fact that thousands of different denominations are worshiping under these same titles but with a plethora of contradictory beliefs and practices. Which leads one to ask, do they themselves really know Him? Identify and Know Your Heavenly Father!

    Overview:
Messianic Judaism is a religious movement, whose membership is primarily made up of ethnic/cultural Jews. They differ from Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Ultra-Orthodox Jews over their beliefs about the Messiah. This difference is sufficient for Morton Klein, the President of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), to have allegedly declared that a Messianic Jew is a " former Jew. " There are many references in the Hebrew Scriptures to the coming of a Messiah who would inspire Jews in Israel to rise and throw off oppression from occupying military powers. Most Jews believe that the Messiah has yet to come; Messianic Jews believe that Yeshua of Nazareth was the expected Messiah. (Yeshua is called Jesus Christ by Christians.) Messianic Jews consider themselves to be fully Jewish. They maintain a " Jewish lifestyle of faith....[they] celebrate all of the biblical holidays (i.e. Passover, Succot, etc) as well as many of the customs which are consistent with the Scriptures. "

Shalom! Messianic Judaism is a modern movement with an ancient past. All the first followers of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah were Messianic Jews. In recent years, more and more Jewish people are believing that the Messiah has come. At the same time, more and more Christians are exploring the Jewish roots of their faith. Lederer/Messianic Jewish Communications has a two-pronged purpose reaching Jewish people with the message of the Messiah, and teaching Christians about the Jewish background to the New Testament. We accomplish these goals through:

Pesach Pesach (Passover) commemorates the Exodus when G-d freed the Israelites from bondage in Egypt. It is also the first of the three feasts that require a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Pesach begins the evening of Aviv (Nisan) 14. It is a night to remember when G-d passed over Egypt killing the firstborn of each household that did not have lambsblood on its doorway. We commemorate Pesach each year by having a seder. The Haggadah is traditionally read, which tells the story of the Exodus and teaches of G-d's mighty arm redeeming Israel from bondage. It is at this meal that the youngest one at the Seder traditionally asks four questions, beginning with "why is this night different from all other nights?" The seder ends with the hope of "Next Year in Jerusalem." Over the years many mistaken traditions have crept into Passover observance, for more info see Passoverisms: Rabbinic Follies. For Messianics, we believe Yeshua was our Pashal lamb in Him we find deliverance from sin and death. Matzo Matzo (Feast of Unleavened Bread) follows Pesach, though many refer to the Festival of Pesach as meaning both festivals: Pesach and Matzo. The Feast of Matzo lasts from Aviv (Nisan) 15-21. No leaven is consumed during this holy festival, reminiscent of the Exodus, when the Israelites fled from Egypt having no time for their bread to rise it was baked unleavened.

    Messianic Judaism: What is it?
Messianic Judaism is the term used to define Jewish people who believe in Jesus. Messianic Jews maintain a lifestyle and form of worship that identifies them with Jewish customs and traditions while believing that Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Jewish Scriptures. Messianic Judaism is part of the universal Body of Messiah, but claims the right to express itself, in a way that agrees with its Jewish heritage.
One of the goals of Messianic Judaism is to build bridges of understanding between Judaism and the Christian church. Because of its origin and composition, Messianic Judaism seeks to help the church to rediscover its Jewish roots. Likewise, Messianic Judaism helps traditional Judaism to have a better understanding of the common heritage that it has with the Christian faith.
